Sponge Mouse with the Heart of a Stress
Ball
06/28/2004 08:27 AM

cad_mouse.jpg imageWhile we'll probably have to wait to try one in real life to pass judgement, this Sponge Mouse, developed by two professors from Iowa State, aims to alleviate wrist pain caused by traditional mice by replacing the hard plastic shell with the squishy insides commonly used by stress balls. Unfortunately, it looks like it uses a thumb cursor -- something that, as a rule, ends up being irritating and not-so-accurate compared to traditional mice. Still, building a better mouse is a admirable goal, especially for we desk jockeys with the glass wrists.

Stress Testing: Using Modular Stress
Test to Test Platforms and Components

Stress Testing: Using Modular Stress
Test to Test Platforms and Components
12/18/2003 12:58 AM
Modular Stress is a flexible system that performs several different types of stress testing. It is based on a set of test modules that each target individual features or components in a platform. The CETK includes a number of operating system (OS) stress modules that target major system components (for example, GWES, FileSys, Kernel, and so on). In addition, the user can create custom modules to target other platform components. The Modular Stress Test harness controls how these tests are run, that is, the sort of test environment that is desired, and collects data on system health throughout the course of a stress run.

Stress Reliever

Stress Reliever 06/27/2004 11:33 AM

Let's say you could tap into the nuclear weapon fire control systems of every country in the world. And let's say you could expose a PHP API for those systems. You then could build a page that when called, would launch all the nuclear missles in the entire world and lead to its instant destruction.

So this page is sitting out on the Web at some unguessable URL. You then build another page with a link to this page. So you now have a page with a link that says "Destroy the World." You can bring this page up, and look at the link, knowing that, if clicked, you would destroy the entire world. Perhaps by adding a CSS :hover pseudo class, you could even get the link to change colors when you hovered on it.

You could get in a fight with your boss, storm back to your desk, and bring up the page with the link. You could drag your mouse leisurely across the link, watch it change colors, watch the arrow turn into a hand...then close the page and go back to work.

I bet that would relieve a lot of tension.

Two questions about stress and work...

Two questions about stress and work... 06/25/2004 05:06 PM

Weird day. Really good bits. Really tiring bits. Feel slightly washed out and exhausted. Can't tell if I'm a big drama queen or not. Met the new Director General of the BBC today. Launched a site and stuff. More on the important bits tomorrow. Question of the moment: Should you be stressed in stressful situations or should you be calm through them? Personal theory - stress gives you power and if corralled and put into your service is fairly useful. Not sure I'm correct. If I'm wrong, I'm going to have to restructure my belief system a lot. Other question: What do people do when they're not working?

stress is a tool to impose load on and stress test Unix-like systems. It will impose user-specified amounts of CPU, I/O, RAM, and HDD load and report any errors it detects. It is used for automated stress testing and for debugging system components which fail only or more often when under load. It runs on x86, PPC64, and PPC 32 GNU/Linux, Tru64, SPARC Solaris, and more.
Changes:
A bug has been fixed in which timeout under extremely heavy load could wrap to a negative value. There are some usage statement fixes and improved Debian packaging.

E-Mail Stress Disorder or Burnout? 05/12/2004 06:48 PM
I think I have some sort of strange e-mail related disorder. Ever since I stared reducing the volume of my daily mail feed I've become even more sensitive to how much damned e-mail I get. It's weird. E-mail seems like such a burden anymore. I have maybe 20 messages I've been needing to reply to (down from hundreds) and it just seems like such a chore.
