Hydrogen Fuel Cell Review

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Review 06/22/2005 01:56 AM

Hydrogen prototype A-Class is a total gas: James Healey gives a good review to a prototype hydrogen fuel-celled vehicle. I really want one. I'm not a tree-hugger or anything, but these cars speak to me.

The remarkable thing, though, is that the test car seemed so real, so much like a car you could — should? — be able to buy today, even though it was a prototype, one of 19 in the USA so the automaker can roll up real-world miles. [...]

So there are two aspects on which to comment.

Fuel cells: Promising. As a popular comedian would say, "Get 'er done."

A-Class: Magnificent small car. Can we please have it here, regardless of how it's powered?

The robot doesn't have a name yet but a school-wide naming contest will be held shortly. The Fuelcell Store helped the club get a fuel cell and the robot's controller is based on a Parallax BASIC Stamp. The website also includes more info on the other components in the fuel system and the companies that provided them.

Quick Summation Of Why Software Patents
Don't Make Sense
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
Wired is running an interview with Pamela Jones, who has been doing an amazing job analyzing every SCO misstep over at GrokLaw. If you follow the case at all, you're likely to be familiar with the site. The interview, though, focuses on what she's going to do with the site once the SCO mess goes away. It's clear that she's not going to stop, but is gearing up to take on other intellectual property messes (which will continue to come, fast and furious). The reason I'm posting this, though, is a great quote from her concerning the problem of patenting software: "With time I expect that as tech savvy-ness increases in the judiciary, and it will, someone will notice that software is just math, creativity and math, and patenting 1 + 1 = 2 will eventually set us up to where only the owners of that and similar patents can write software. Meanwhile the rest of the world will move ahead in development, while the United States is stuck in the mud because no one can write 1 + 1 = 2 without crossing somebody's palm with silver."

Software patents are bad for coders like
literary patents would be for writers

Software patents are bad for coders like
literary patents would be for writers
06/22/2005 01:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: Richard Stallman, creator of the Free Software movement, has written a tremendous essay for the Guardian on the risks of software patents. Richard undertakes a gedankenexperiment about "literary patents" and the impact they would have had on Victor Hugo as he sat down to pen Les Miserables.
Now consider this hypothetical literary patent: Claim 1: a communication process that represents, in the mind of a reader, the concept of a character who has been in jail for a long time and subsequently changes his name...

These patents would all cover the story of one character in a novel. They overlap, but they do not precisely duplicate each other, so they could all be valid simultaneously - all the patent holders could have sued Victor Hugo. Any one of them could have prohibited publication of Les Misérables.

You might think these ideas are so simple that no patent office would have issued them. We programmers are often amazed by the simplicity of the ideas that real software patents cover - for instance, the European Patent Office has issued a patent on the progress bar, and one on accepting payment via credit cards. These would be laughable if they were not so dangerous.

Hydrogen Powered Bicycles

Hydrogen Powered Bicycles 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

Motorbike runs on hydrogen power: These look extremely cool. Apparently dead quiet too.

[...] the motorcycle's fuel cell develops the equivalent of eight horsepower, good for speeds up to 50 miles an hour. The cycle has a range of about 100 miles on a tank of fuel. Currently, a hydrogen fill-up would cost about $3, says the cycle's project director, Andy Eggleston.

The fuel cell itself can be pulled out and carried around like a small suitcase. The company says it foresees one day being able to use the same fuel cell for different applications, such as a boat.

With fewer moving parts than in a conventional motorcycle, the hydrogen-powered motorcycle gains simplicity and quiet. The rider hears little more than the sound of tires spinning over the road or trail.

I wondered whether I should call this a "motorcycle," but at 8 h.p., I figured it was just a bike with...a...motor. Wait a second...

Need a Hydrogen Reactor for Your Robot?

Need a Hydrogen Reactor for Your Robot? 02/13/2004 08:03 PM
CNN says that Scientists have developed a new hydrogen reactor. A "Reactor" sounds like some extreme crazy nuclear device, but basically the contraption converts ethanol into cheap hydrogen for use in fuel cells. This little reactor stands about 2 foot tall (0.6 meters) and can output enough hydrogen to generate about 1 kilowatt, which is about enough to power a house or a car (or a robot). Scientists have been trying to figure out how to generate hydrogen efficiently so that producing the hydrogen uses less energy than using it and they may have just come up with a real breakthrough. Hydrogen (and the hydrogen economy) is the holy grail because it doesn't produce any pollution and potentially could reduce our reliance on oil. Perhaps a fuel cell or hydrogen reactor may actually be in your robot's future?

USATODAY.com - The evolution of hydrogen fuel cells has been remarkable. Just a few years ago the propulsion systems were so bulky that only large vehicles and trucks had enough space for them. Now, small vehicles are whirring around in demonstration fleets, their motors spinning on electricity produced by hydrogen fuel cells tucked neatly out of the way.
