Dual booting Linux and Windows 2000

Dual booting Linux and Windows 2000 12/26/2002 01:47 AM
Dual booting Linux and Windows 2000. I'm going to start using Linux with Windows XP. Wish me luck. The first step is to setup dual booting correctly. I'm also downloading Linux 8.0 with SmartFTP so I have the images. Wish me luck. I'm doing this on my desktop at work.

Longhorn is supposed to ship in the next 18 months. However, nearly half of all IT shops are still running Windows 2000. Is there anything Microsoft can do to boost adoption of its newer operating systems?

I got a "new" used PC recently to use as a test machine. I call it "The Beast" because it's very large and very heavy. The tower case is huge. The Beast has a SCSI controller, which is new ground for me. When you power it on, it searches for strangely-named devices that cause flash-backs to the ide-scsi debates. It has a smallish ten gigabyte IDE disk drive, an ATAPI CD-Rom, a floppy drive, a 700mhz Pentium III, and 256 meg of RAM. It also has a problem. It came with an operating system that has a viral nature. No, I'm not talking about GPL licensing. I mean it came pre-loaded with Windows, which is the official ground zero for Internet infections.

Dual-booting multiple Linux distros

Dual-booting multiple Linux distros 12/28/2004 03:09 AM
All the Linux flavors I have tried have no problem dual-booting with Windows, but how do you boot multiple Linux flavors, like Fedora and Ubuntu? This is a great way to have your favorite distribution on the first drive (hda) and experiment with the hundreds of others on a second drive (hdb). I found many procedures by Googling, but most of them concentrated on booting two distros on the same hard drive. However, this is a very simple procedure.

Hollywood Creates Software For Automatic

Hollywood Creates Software For Automatic
Booting Of File Sharers
04/19/2004 01:38 PM
The folks in Hollywood are getting a bit more technical. Realizing that it was taking some ISPs and university network administrators some time to respond to their DMCA takedown notices when accusing file sharers or illegal activity, Universal has written up some open source software that they're pushing on universities and ISPs that would help automate the process of kicking them off the network. The idea is that the studios could send out a notification, that would automatically go into the system, send off an alert email to the user, and then shut off their account until the "offending material" was removed. Leaving aside the irony of Hollywood offering free open source software (this is the same industry that is still telling people "if it's free, you stole it"), it also seems to go a step beyond what most people consider due process in making sure that those kicked off from the network actually did something wrong.

No one UI fits all - anymore!

No one UI fits all - anymore! 05/26/2004 11:58 AM
One UI Does Not Fit All.

To see the full-screen trailers of The Incredibles and Alexander, Apple is making you use iTunes, rather than its QuickTime player. (It uses QuickTime for the full screen version of Spider-Man II or Sky Captain.) After you view the trailer with iTunes, you end up at the iTunes store's new trailers section. However, most of the trailers housed there drive you to QuickTime, rather than iTunes, as the media player.

I don't believe that one UI fits all. Neither does Apple, usually. There's good reasons that the UIs for QuickTime, iTunes, Safari, the iPod, and OS X are different, and tuned to the functions and medium they're focused on. A browser is about browsing and searching. It accomodates viewing short media like music clips and trailers via plug-ins just fine. Music lends itself to playlists, sorting by artist, album, or genre, and, when portable, one-thumb scrolling and manipulation. Etc., etc.

The iTunes video experience exposes some flaws of the single UI approach. It's probably just an implementation glitch, but with QuickTime you can skip ahead or back in the trailer; you can't with iTunes. Tivo, who is very good at creating a TV UI, falls flat with its music and photo features. Microsoft's Media Center implementations - both portable and TV screen versions - are similarly challenged, though Microsoft, for once, is not crippling them with too many Windows conventions.

[David Card]

I don't believe that one UI fits all - either.

But this isn't necessarily what I meant.

Check out Nokia Web Services Framework for Devices — a Service-oriented Architecture. It’s a practical intro to how SOA might play in the mobile space, with some eminently sensible background work; there’s a section entitled What is a service-oriented architecture, and why is it good?. Anyone who doesn’t think that the center of gravity of networked computing, which means all computing, is moving toward the mobile space and isn’t reading Russell Beattie and probably should be. As I’ve said before, if you want to know the future of SOAs and Web Services, look at the people who are actually deploying them and see what they’re doing. Anything they’re not going to use, you can ignore for now.

Wi-Fi Fits Neatly into Truckers' Lives

Wi-Fi Fits Neatly into Truckers' Lives 05/06/2004 05:35 PM
Truck stops could become the most unwired category of business in the next 12 months: the market wants it: No one is guessing whether truckers want Wi-Fi hotspots at truck stops. It's a done deal. Truckers are typically also businessmen and -women and they use their laptops on the road to deal with loads, pay bills, and keep in touch with family. A hotspot means not having to leave one's truck and tote a laptop, increasing security and ease. Thousands of truck stops will have Wi-Fi by this time next year. The annual rates of $200 to $250 for unlimited access means that there's money to be made in assuring loyalty. A trucker will travel another 30 miles to use their Wi-Fi (just read this article), meaning that the right price and the right ubiquity could translate to thousands of dollars of additional gas and food sales per Wi-Fi user....

Gadget fits inside bugle, plays music
for you.

bugleElectronic bugle implant makes it so you don't have to learn the instrument in order "play" it.
The device ... slides snugly deep into the bugle's bell. The device plays a high-quality recorded version of “Taps,” taken from the 1999 Memorial Day service at Arlington National Cemetery. The resonating tones inside the bugle create a realistic horn quality.
And here's a related article:
"Facing critical shortage of musicians for military funerals, the Pentagon has approved the use of a push-button bugle that plays taps by itself as the player holds it to his lips"

..."With a small digital recording devise inserted into each bugle's bell, a member of the honor guard at the funeral simply presses a button on the devise. A five-second delay give the guards time to raise the instrument to their lips as if they are going to play it"
