Convenience store chain
7-Eleven is determined to dip their Slurpee straws into the world of
digital content, looking to offer music, movies and whatever else they
can think of to their customers, saying "customers should be able to
walk into a 7-Eleven store to burn their favorite songs onto a CD or
download content onto their portable music player." Picture-perfect
scenario: Their system allows me to bookmark a song I like on the
radio so that when I go to 7-Eleven next, it asks me to confirm my
song purchase when paying for gas and sends them (wirelessly) to my
portable/car media player. With their talk that the digital delivery
system will be viable for them within 10 years, I think they could
have something that advanced up and running by then. (Thanks,
Ravi!)

02/10/2004 02:49 AMWhat To Rent: Its first recommendation for me was "Maverick." Too bad I
hate westerns. I don't care much for Jodie Foster, either.
The single greatest question troubling mankind at this
time is "What movie should I rent ?". We are here to answer that
question! What to Rent is a website linked to a computer-cluster that
will recommend a movie for you to watch based upon your personality
and the type of film experience you are looking for.
It doesn't require any personal information to create a profile,
not even an email address. And no new password to remember.
Refreshing.

Bollywood Signs Up For Kazaa Movie
Downloads... But Not Really
12/23/2003 05:39 PMThere have been a few stories about "legitimate" companies doing deals
with Kazaa, but once you get past the headline, you realize that it's
not true at all. Just like all those other deals the headlines
trumpeting a deal between some
some Bollywood film makers and
Kazaa isn't really about Kazaa at all. Instead, it's a deal with
Kazaa's sister company Altnet, which runs a service within Kazaa to
distribute approved copy protected content. So, this isn't at all
about film makers understanding the promotional value of free
downloads, but rather them trying to piggyback copy protection (in
this case files that supposedly "self-destruct" after a single $3
viewing) on the popularity of Kazaa. The deal isn't even that good.
$3 for a product that self-destructs after a single viewing? You get
a better deal going to the local video store. Meanwhile, though, they
get all the publicity of having the film "offered on Kazaa". All
Altnet is really doing is bolting a pay-for service (like iTunes) into
Kazaa. It doesn't leverage the real benefits of a distributed file
sharing network at all.

CinemaNow to Offer Television Episode

02/05/2005 10:17 PM
CinemaNow is set to complete a deal with most of the
major television networks (only Paramont/Viacom is a hold out) to
provide per-episode downloads of television shows—maybe even
before they hit DVD. Up to this point, CinemaNow hasn't had much
success (by my estimation), namely because it takes so long to
download a high-quality, two-hour movie. People are probably more
willing to accept a lower-quality video file for television, though,
especially for something like a 30 minute sit-com. The real question
will be price, of course. $1 to $3 sounds about right for an episode
(especially if we don't ever have to buy that copy again to download
it to different devices), but as is typical with legal download
services, it'll probably be more expensive than buying the real-world
media option (in this case, DVD Season Packs).

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

08/15/2004 12:01 AMThere was an ad on TV for a bridal fair just a moment ago. It
occurred to me that the bride spends thousands of dollars on a dress
she’ll never wear again but the groom rents his tuxedo, which is
something he’ll have many chances to wear again. That seems
backward to me.
Music Rental: Another POV
Music Rental: Another POV
06/01/2004 05:43 AMPeople don't want to rent music, observed Steve Jobs, which is why
there isn't a subscription-based service over at the iTunes Music
Store. And I tend to agree on this point.
But, one of the
"advantage" of the old Napster, a lot of people have also observed, is
the ability to sample and discover new music. And sampling and
discovering new music on the iTunes Music Store, currently, is too
much work. A lot of clicks. A lot of waiting.
Maybe the new iPod
division should invent something like a personalized radio station,
which can be listened via iTunes or iPod. The tunes selection will be
partly based on what the user have on his iTunes library. And, oh, a
30-second preview is simply not enough for discovering new music.
Simply choose the option, "Include iTunes Music Store samples", and
iTunes/iPod will selected previews into your current playlist. Perhaps
even with a text-to-speech announcement. Oh, of course, make it easy
for the user to then buy the tune.
Rental Car GPS Spying!
Rental Car GPS Spying!
04/06/2005 06:18 PMMy buddy and I were driving at a rate of speed in a rental car that
was well above the posted limit a year or two ago. Out of the blue his
cell phone rang and as he talked I noticed he started slowing down.
You guessed it, the rental car agency was calling him saying he was
violating his rental car agreement.
If memory serves me correctly he was charged like $300.00 extra
when we turned the car in. Finally a court has stood up and say you
cannot do this. If your not aware that rental car companies are doing
this you have been so advised. [Techdirt<

The Future of Video Rental
The Future of Video Rental
06/22/2004 08:58 AMBlockbuster jabs back at its rivals: This is an article about
the future of the Blockbuster video rental chain, but mixed in there
is a lot of good information about upcoming video delivery
technology.
Cable operators say they have the best solution of all.
They provide about 16.5 million homes with video-on-demand (VOD)
‐ a service that enables viewers to watch a movie whenever they
want with the same flexibility that traditional videos offer to pause,
rewind and fast-forward. Nearly 37 million cable subscribers will
probably have VOD by 2008.
What I'm still waiting for is the service that will let me pick a
movie from a menu and watch it right then, instead of ordering it and
having to wait until a certain time to watch it. Wake me up when this
happens.
