K9 Shake and Bake Tests at Aromas Quarry

K9 Shake and Bake Tests at Aromas Quarry 11/05/2003 12:02 PM
Nasa is conducting two weeks of tests on the K9 robot at the Aromas granite quarry in California. The K9 rover is slated for a mission in 2009. In the meantime scientists will be trying to make the rover smarter and less vunerable to the 20 minutes communications roundtrip that it takes for scientists on Earth to react to problems it may encounter. The K9 robot, if it runs into a problem, attempts to be more autonomous by having list of contingency plans to help it accomplish it's goals until mission control can get back to it. K9 will of course have nukes on board to blast any hostile aliens it may find, er, um... to keep it warm at night like the previous rovers had. The robot will cost over $500k and the cool rocker-bogie design was developed at JPL at CIT. Don't take these tests for granted (?granite?), hopefully, these tests will help prevent K9 from rolling over and playing dead.

Of course, this K9 is not to be confused with Dr. Who's K9, but it was named after it.

FYI: Nasa's Spirit and Opportunity rovers and ESA's Beagle 2 rover and perhaps even Japan's Hope rover should arrive sometime in December of this year to early January next year.

Ars Technica review Panther

Ars Technica review Panther 11/10/2003 11:20 PM
Ars Technica have a written another typically thorough and exhaustive review. The editorial team have written great reviews of all versions of Mac OS X, from Beta to Jaguar, and now they've published a lengthy assessment of Panther. An excellent read for those who are contemplating upgrading and those who already have. On a personal note - the Powerbook is back with Apple. I'm hoping to get it back in the next couple of days. Out of curiosity, I booted it up again on the morning it was due to get sent back - and, lo and behold, it came back to life! Ah well, hopefully Apple'll check it out to avoid any future panics occuring.

ars_usb2.jpgArs Technica has posted another in-depth round-up of USB Flash Drives, this time focussing on the new crop of USB 2.0 compatible drives. I'm going to buck convention and link you to the very end of the article where you can get their scores and prices, since for some reason Ars's janky CMS doesn't let you skip forward or backward more than a page at a time. If you want to start from the beginning, change the 12 to a 1 in the URL.

Oh, spoiler warning: The Transcend JetFlash 110 and SimpleTech Bonzai SD/MMC models both got 9 out of 10—the highest scores.
