09/24/2004 09:35 AMGovernor Howard Dean emailed Democracy for America supporters urging
donationsa to Democratic Leader Tom Daschle's campaign. The request
was repeated online through the Democracy for America website and
blog. The response was over $220,000 in on-line, small dollar
contributions to Senator Daschle in just 72 hours. Democracy for
America wants to do the same for another United States Senate
candidate. This week Democracy for America is hosting an online vote
to determine which Senate candidates receive the next appeal from

white, gray). Although just an incremental release, some changes
include an faster CD ripping speed (24x), updated navigation
interface, and options to edit your own DVD menus when burning custom
discs. Plus you can now copy MP3s directly to the hard drive without
converting them into ATRAC. The new PSX versions should be on sale

Programming in Objective-C
Programming in Objective-C
01/24/2004 12:35 PMProgramming in Objective-C is a concise, carefully written tutorial on
the basics of Objective-C and object-oriented programming. The book
makes no assumption about prior experience with object-oriented
programming languages or with the C language (upon which Objective-C
is based).
CSS vs. Tables - an objective look
CSS vs. Tables - an objective look
05/13/2004 02:00 PMAndy Budd offers an objective look at
table based vs. CSS based design, arguing that using tables for
layout sometimes makes more sense than relying on CSS. He also states
that the "CSS only" approach of some standards enthusiasts may
alienate those not so well-versed in CSS.
Although some of the purists in my customer base may be shocked to
hear this, I'm inclined to agree with Andy. IMO, you should use
whichever technique makes your work easier - both long-term and
short-term. Now, I tend to avoid tables since they're a pain to
maintain, but I also realize pure CSS designs can be equally painful
given all the cross-browser pitfalls.
When I advocate CSS, it's never from a dogmatic position - instead,
it's simply because CSS makes things so much easier, especially when
it comes to updating your site. If using CSS doesn't simplify your
work, then you need to simplify how you're using CSS, even if that
means (shudder) using tables for your layout.
Objective Rhetoric
Objective Rhetoric
07/28/2004 02:46 PMAt this point, thirty years after New Journalism and Post-Modernism,
you'd think we wouldn't still need to have this argument, but, here
goes: Objectivity isn't objective. Or, as my friend AKMA puts it, "The
only people you can trust to be objective are the ones who know that
objectivity can’t be reached." If you need proof of this, look no
further than the lead article in today's Boston Globe. I have no
quarrel at all with the article. In fact, I read it with interest this
morning over breakfast. Glen Johnson does a fine job reporting on the
second night...
Objective words
Objective words
08/27/2004 01:37 PMAccording to Editor and Publisher today: Two days ago, in a front page
news article, two New York Times reporters referred to the Swift Boat
charges as "mostly unsubstantiated." The paper went a step further
this morning on the front page, when reporter Elizabeth Bumiller
flatly called the charges "unsubstantied," without a qualifier, in the
first sentence of her story on the resignation of the national counsel
for President Bush. Other newspapers were not nearly as bold today...
So long as we have to choose words for sentences, objectivity is
impossible....

Introduction to Cocoa with Objective-C
04/09/2004 03:55 PMNo, I'm not proud of using a proprietary operating system, but Apple's
Cocoa + Development Tools is just about the richest, simplest and most
powerful programming environment anywhere. If you are interested in
Cocoa and don't have a Mac there is an open source, cross platform
(but not nearly so complete) implementation available called GNUstep.
Here is an introduction to the style of Objective-C Cocoa and some
reasons why I hope more programming will be done in this style in the
future.

09/15/2004 03:20 PM
So the AT&T Wireless Ogo isn't coming out
today - I think we can chalk that up to an overanxious rep - but it
should be out soonish, from what I can gather. In the meantime, check
out this comparison shot. It's a little bigger than I was hoping, but
if it really just costs $100 I'm not going to complain about a little
extra size. Besides, that might make the keyboard more useful.
And if AT&T lets people install their own software on it, it's got
an even better chance to give Danger a run for the Sidekick money. I
have my fingers crossed, which made typing this really hard.
