Stock Investment Guide brings stock
analysis to Mac OS X
01/22/2004 02:13 AM

Churr Software has published Stock Investment Guide (SIG), which fills the void created by the lack of stock club analysis software for the Mac, according to the company. Until now, the only way to use such an application was to run Windows-only software in Virtual PC.

A Developers' Guide to
Return-On-Investment (ROI)
07/09/2002 04:57 AM
So how can you, as a senior software developer or team leader, use ROI to good effect in your project? To answer that, we've put together six handy rules: RULE 1: Have a clear business model. RULE 2: Prioritise functionality against ROI, not perceived priority by users. RULE 3: Deliver the biggest revenue creating items within a 3 month period. RULE 4: Design your software so that development is quick and scalable. RULE 5: Build business softwalls that are architecture neutral. RULE 6: Employ a mix of permanent and contract staff on a project. "zeldman.exped"

The New Stock Bubble

The New Stock Bubble 04/13/2004 09:56 AM

Here we go again: Stocks in unknown and untested tech and biotech companies -- and supposed nanotech (my favorite new bubble category) --are soaring. Price to earnings? Surely you're kidding about the earnings part. The market is frothy again. Even solid companies are selling way above historical P/E ratios. Be wary. You think Wall Street has totally cleaned up its act? Get real. These guys are incorrigible. If you're going to jump in again, you should at least be double-sure that your broker's corporate parent isn't getting millions in fees from companies it's pushing at retail. Of course, they're probably working on some new way to con you. Meanwhile, I've had lots of e-mails recently touting micro-capitalized companies founded in in places like Nevada, headquartered in places like the Cayman Islands and claiming big plans to make a huge score in, say, China. Oh, sure, those have to be solid enterprises. I'm sympathetic to most scam victims. But anyone who buys a stock based on an unsolicited e-mail recommendation, or who even looks at such a thing with any intention other than derisive laughter, is an idiot who should not complain after losing his money. Period.

Forbes looks at which stocks relate to Wi-Fi: In a brief analysis coupled by a table, Forbes examines whether Wi-Fi has forward growth and which companies could capitalize on that growth. The writer has a wonderful mot juste on 3G cellular's limit: As demand for 3G picks p, so will demand for Wi-Fi. Reason: In very dense areas 3G networks slow to a crawl. Another reason, not mentioned? Upload speeds for domestic US 3G networks will be no faster than about 50 Kbps on average, regardless of download speeds until at least 2006. Qualcomm has technology up its sleeve that would allow more symmetrical high-speed 3G networks, but its not scheduled for deployed, and adoption isn't fast, as we've seen, of new flavors....

I’ve said more than once that I’d like an RSS feed for my stock market portfolio. I even cobbled one together a few months ago, but I lost it somehow in the laptop-to-laptop transition. Now Walter Higgins emails me: “prompted by your post last june on rss stock tickers, and being a dabbler in stocks and rss myself, I’ve been maintaining a feed that monitors stocks and portfolios. e.g. this will display current values for sun, microsoft and oracle while this will return a rss feed for a portfolio of 1000 shares of sun, 200 of microsoft and 500 shares of oracle. This feed includes a total portfolio value. This ticker feed is responsible for most of my site traffic.”
