Conducting Research Surveys via Email and the Web
http://www.rand.org /publications/MR/MR1480/

While many visitors to commercial websites may find themselves asked to take part in any number of marketing-type surveys, more and more scholars are attempting to use the web to create well-defined surveys to examine academic questions. This intriguing publication from the RAND Organization (conducted by Matthias Schonlau, Ronald D. Fricker, Jr., and Marc N. Elliott) examines the validity of a number of claims, including the popularity of such online surveys due to their low cost and rapid return time. Within the document's 118-pages, the authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using email and the web to conduct research surveys, along with offering several practical suggestions for designing and implementing Internet surveys. The report consists of seven chapters (all of which may be downloaded separately), and three appendices, including an extended literature review. [The Scout Report - January 16, 2004]

Conducting "secure" financial
transactions with Internet Explorer
isn't safe
07/06/2004 04:50 AM
The latest exploit is a file called "img1big.gif" that decompresses into a malevolent Browser Helper Object (BHO) that captures your financial transactions. According to a report from SANS, this BHO: watches for HTTPS (secure) access to URLs of several dozen banking and financial sites in multiple countries. When an outbound HTTPS connection is made to such a URL, the BHO then grabs any outbound POST/GET data from within IE before it is encrypted by SSL. When it captures data, it creates an outbound HTTP connection to http://www.refestltd.com/cgi-bin/yes.pl and feeds the captured data to the script found at that location. There are only two choices left with IE: Either don't browse the web with it, or don't use it for financial transactions. Thank goodness there are choices like Mozilla, Firefox and Opera, for those of us still chained to Windows....

First, a comparison of results and then some comments on what it all means.

Survey Says, US Net Surfers Bored Of
Taking Online Surveys
04/05/2005 04:42 AM
According to a study released by Nielsen/Netratings, Americans spent 2% less time online in March than they did a year ago. Is there reason to be alarmed? Not really. In order for this data to be truly useful, we need see the amounts of time spent online broken down by tasks and have comparative metrics for their offline counterparts. Something like: taking online surveys (down 2%), reading email (up 9%), deleting spam (down 11%), surfing the web (up 13%), surfing the ocean (down 3%), working at the office (down 10%), spending time with kids (up 17%), and making sure you're up on the latest pointless statistics (up 13%). It's not that statistics aren't important, it's just that 50% of all statistics are made up anyway.
