By now most of the world (outside of the occasional football coach) knows that a woman-friendly workplace is good business. But while many big companies have all sorts of programs to retain and promote women, one obscure accounting firm has been particularly successful at doing so. So what do they know?

Achieving Open Access: Alternatives To Author Charges
http://www.library. yale.edu/science/oa.html

There probably isn't a researcher or scholar alive who wouldn't love to see true open access to scholarly journals -- freely available, immediate electronic access to published, peer-reviewed research articles. And while some open access does exist -- in a limited way to some journals -- the author proposes some ideas for making open access a more universal reality. One plan being implemented by some publishers calls for "author charges" as an alternative to traditional subscriptions. The assumption is that those with vested interests should pay for the distribution of the material, and that government grants and other sources of income will fund these direct payments. Noting that this model is flawed for a variety of reasons, the article suggests instead that alternatives can provide the desired access without destabilizing the system. One interesting idea is to reconsider the entire "publish or perish" focus of the promotion and tenure process. The existing system encourages unlimited scholarly publication, and enormous numbers of editorial boards with little guarantee of quality control from many commercial operations. Ideally, if papers were only being written and published because their authors truly had something to say, everybody would benefit. (Yale University Science Libraries)

Achieving a Perfect Storm of Blogging Tools for Civil Society
http://edwebproje ct.org/andy/blog/000575.html

Across the blogosphere this week, folks have been talking about a recent post on Susan Mernit's Blog in which Susan lays out her thoughts on what she'd like to see news organizations do to enhance their coverage of the political conventions this summer. Susan, a media consultant and veteran of the US edtech wars, notes that media outlets appear to have done little to creatively embrace tools like blogs, rss feeds, and social networks such as Orkut.com to make their convention coverage more meaningful for voters.[Andy Carvin's Waste of Bandwidth

Trigger v5

Trigger v5 12/25/2004 05:30 PM

Trigger: Joe covered Trigger in a Friday diversion a few months ago. I got hooked on it and played it until my fingers bled.

The only drawback to the game was that the same old maps got boring. Well, version 5 has been released, and there are scads of new maps for downloading, as well as some guy who has written a program to generate six random maps every day.

Fun stuff. Now we just need more cars.

Bad Commercials Trigger DVR Fast

Bad Commercials Trigger DVR Fast
Forwarding
04/05/2005 02:15 PM
While the story linked here is mostly about yet another overhyped prediction saying that TiVo-like DVR devices are "a threat to commercial advertising," there are two interesting points that seem obvious -- but haven't gotten much attention in these debates. The first is that, while everyone figures out how to fast forward through commercials, some people apparently forget until a bad commercial comes on. In other words, they're fine watching a commercial that seems interesting, amusing or relevant -- but when the bad commercials come on, they realize they are wasting their time. The second point is that users of DVR's, while fast forwarding through commercials do tend to be paying close attention to what's on the TV, looking for "heavily branded screenshots" that indicate it's time to stop fast-forwarding. While this idea has been taken and tweaked to lead to TiVo' s popup ads during commercials, it does make you wonder if advertisers will start designing more TiVo-friendly commercials which would be heavily branded, even for people fast forwarding through. It might also mean that some TV shows could try a branded intro shot, with a statement along the lines of "Stop fast forwarding NOW!" which could also be sponsored by various brands -- though, that could annoy non-DVR using watchers.

The soul

The soul 05/04/2004 03:42 AM

Rough ly seven years ago: "I think each of us has a kernel, under all the layers of experience and pain, that's ageless and perfect. Some people call this a heart, the organ that pumps blood thru our bodies. Others call it a spirit, the essence of the person. Whatever you call it, it's there, and you can easily find it."

Many years ago at a workshop I asked the teacher if goose bumps are love or fear. He didn't answer. Now I think I know. I get goose bumps when my point is touched. Don't know what that means? Read the story .

Just fill the catapult with one or more cupids, pull the trigger, and aim at the person of your dreams! This "love gun" alarms me, but maybe I overreact as a parent about my kid's exposure to violence. Is this just a harmless novelty, or a disturbing example of how desensitized we are to guns? At least it's for kids over 3.
