On scientific truth and Christian
truth...
07/16/2004 06:40 AMIn the middle of an
article about the way that the religious right have interfered with
scientific work in the US, I find a troubling paragraph:
At a time when biology is poised to undergo a fundamental
revolution, the US government, arguably the most potent government in
the history of the world, is rife with White House appointees who
believe that scientific truth and Christian truth cannot be
synonymous, and may well be in opposition.
I ask myself - do I believe that scientific truth and Christian
truth can be synonymous? My answer - no. I ask myself - do I believe
that they may well be in opposition? My answer - yes. The only
difference between me and the people from the religious right then, is
that we disagree with which 'truth' is the more reliable. I stick on
the side of the people who test their conclusions and refine their
belief systems with reference to evidence - they stick to the side of
the people who believe that a magic being sets bushes on fire and
turns women into salt.
So the scary bit for me is not that the nutters in power believe
that the two are incompatible, but that the assumption is that for
reasonable, normal, run-of-the-mill scientists all across America that
it's normal to be able to reconcile meteorology with the concept of
rains of blood and biology with people who bring people back from the
dead...

Rape, Torture, and Lies An
ongoing Canadian saga has a sad new twist today: photojournalist
Ziba Zahra Kazemi was likely
brutally tortured and raped before her death in Iran in 2003.
Arrested after a demonstration, the official Iranian line has been
that her death was an accident due to injuries from a fall. The ER
doctor who treated her has now spoken out, after being granted refugee
status in Canada.
Wikipedia has an
excellent outline of the entire story.

of torture mean to the world and mean about us. Look at these images
closely and you realize that they can't just be the random accidents
of war, or the strange, inexplicable perversity of a few bad seeds.
First of all, they exist. Soldiers who allow themselves to be
photographed humiliating prisoners clearly don't believe this behavior
is unpalatable. Second, the soldiers didn't just reach into a grab bag
of things they thought would humiliate young Iraqi men. They chose
sexual humiliation, which may recall to outsiders the rape...

Truth in Advertising?
Truth in Advertising?
04/09/2004 04:12 PM
Perhaps it is because I come from a culture where advertising
pervades every aspect of waking life and which wouldn't surprise me if
paid product placements would start appearing in our dreams, but I
give some extra attention and curiosity to the advertising in Finland.
I've noticed that Finnish advertising tends to lean towards a more
straightforward and clean style than much of the aggressive in your
face advertisements in the US. This is not to say that both countries
don't have their own respective loads of crap, but overall I think the
softer sell and elegant design is more attractive. However, I wasn't
prepared for a new trend of blatant truth in advertising lately. It's
refreshing, yet disturbing since it goes against all the usual rules
of the advertising grift.
The ad above is from last weeks Nyt Magazine which is attempt
ing to recruit young engineering students with "Sex can wait...".
Never mind that the guy is dressed like a 1970s fashion disaster
complete with afro and seriously tragic rainbow shades, is telling
young nerds the truth that their chances of getting laid are so slim
that years of toiling for an engineering degree is a far better option
a successful sales ploy? I mean, I've spent my life around these sorts
of guys who at the mere mention of the word boobies go
completely quiet. Sure, sex can wait, but getting an engineering
degree isn't going to make you dress better, bathe regularly or get
you laid, ever. Well, unless you come into some serious cash which, in
Finland at least, probably isn't going to happen. So, I think the
slogan needs a little tweaking to something more like, "Those who can
get laid get MBAs. Those who can't, become engineers. Enroll in our
engineering program now!" Sex can sell anything as even the most
casual observation of modern advertising will show, but not getting
sex as a marketing tactic? It's hilarious, brutally honest and I'd
love to see if their enrollment increases. :)
[update: Ignatz sent me the American version of the sex
can wait advertising ploy. The billboard is sponsored by the Kansas
City Missouri Department of Health. Did I miss the memo that
engineering is the new priesthood? Does sex make you stupid? What? The
unwritten subtext to this billboard is that KC is much like St. Louis
in that the black population live in the post-apocalyptic downtown
with an educational system handicap. So, the real message here is
something like "We already have enough black crackhead single mothers
so dream that you can get into and afford a college education and,
while you're at it, keep your dick in your pants." Of course, studies
show that kids who participate in these 'just say no to sex until
marriage' campaigns still have sex and often unprotected sex. Maybe
the government will start offering scholarships for abstainers through
their churches as soon as Dumbya gets a second term.]
The Finnish Army also has a new
campaign which has a poster that
shows a doctor's Porsche, an engineer's BMW [which still won't get
them laid], and a soldier's car that makes a Boston beater Yugo held
together with duct tape look good. In the US this ad would be amusing,
yet deadly. As the North St. Louis wise old saying goes, "You can
sleep in yo' car, but you can't drive yo' house." A more pure or
elegant distillation of the American love affair with the automobile
would be hard to come by. The US TV commercials for the Marines always
show an attractive, beefcake white guy wrestling with some demonic
enemy in a video game style of unreality. Honesty is refreshing but
reality has not been a traditional tactic in military recruitment. The
classic "Uncle Sam Wants You" poster is brief for a reason since
finishing the sentence would leave less to the imagination and the
power of your mind to see what it wants to see. I wonder what happens
to the engineering student who graduates and goes into the Army. Well,
I guess if they're not getting laid, a sexy car won't seem so
important.
[update: Jarkko has informed me that I have been had. :) I
did wonder about the kil.fi domainname but considering Helsinki
is hel.fi and Finland hasn't deployed armed forces outside of Finland,
I didn't give it more than a passing thought. It is, apparently, a
parody of mil.fi attempting to dissuade people from joining up. I
suppose I should feel a bit better that it took him a little while to
catch on to the joke. :) So much for my optimisim about truth in
advertising.]
I'll hope to see this trend continue into the fashion and cosmetics
industries where reality is in cryogenic suspension. And what about
those foods that advertise themselves as 100% "organic"? :) That
always cracks me up, but maybe that's because I'm a chemist. I don't
know that advertising culture could survive a trend towards honesty,
but it certainly would be entertaining to see more of it since it is
charming and compelling in a field of carefully crafted manipulations
of varying levels of integrity.
The truth about milk
The truth about milk
06/21/2004 09:00 AMFrom a few days ago, Slate on the decline in milk's popularity, Milk:
How a wholesome drink became a villain. There are some interesting
facts in there about how Americans began drinking milk so much in the
first place.
Milk reform began as soon as milk drinking became an entrenched
American habit -- during the mid-1800s, as Americans moved to cities.
But the early reformers wanted Americans to drink more milk, not
less...the early reformers blamed rising infant mortality on city
life: The new cities, they argued, caused women to become morally
degenerate and physically weak, and they transmitted those ailments to
the infants they breast-fed. The solution: Feed babies cleaner, purer
cow's milk.
A perfect solution, if I may say so. Everyone knows that cows are the
most morally upright citizens in the barnyard! The other sins against
milk, according to Slate: its high cost, its racist inability to be
digested by peoples other than Northern Europeans and Saharan nomads,
and its agribusiness, Frankenfood tendency to get all drugged up with
hormones.
While I don't agree with all the arguments against milk, I will admit
to being a soy milk drinking since 1998. And I'm happy to report that
soy milk is gaining in popularity. Once an obscure beverage relegated
to a back aisle in a San Francisco health food store, I can find it
right next to milk in the dairy section at nearly every supermarket I
shop. Yay yummy delicious soy!

Microsoft and Truth
Microsoft and Truth
05/21/2004 11:28 AMBloomberg News:
Microsoft told to explain e-mail deletion mem. A federal judge
ordered Microsoft Corp. yesterday to search a company computer to help
explain why Vice President James Allchin told employees in 2000 to
eliminate e-mails.
Allchin, you may recall, is the
senior executive who told his colleagues that Microsoft had to
"leverage" its Windows franchise. Antitrust law makes it illegal to
leverage a monopoly.
In a company that either took antitrust law seriously or was run by
honorable people, he would have been disciplined or fired for that
statement. Instead he has been repeatedly promoted.
Now, years later, it turns out that he was up to his same old tricks,
if the implications of this latest story prove true. But this isn't
about Allchin. It's about a corporate culture.
In the Burst case, which this story is about, Microsoft is accused of
appropriating a small company's technology. There are suspicious gaps
in Microsoft's e-mail, as the judge notes, and peculiar explanations
by Microsoft lawyers -- and the judge made it plain that he doesn't
believe Microsoft is telling the truth here.
Again and again lately, Microsoft has tried to persuade the world that
it's changing. Some evidence would be useful if the world is to buy
that notion.
