05/06/2004 03:07 AMYahoo threw a conference called "Real Women, Digital World" as a kind
fo hyper-focus-group, in which a bunch of women were called in to
explain What Women Want From The Internet. This on-site account is
pretty funny.
Rachel, who gives her age as "almost 23," is a recent transplant
to San Francisco from Chicago. She is dressed in jeans, sneakers,
a T-shirt, a zip-up hoodie and a belt decorated with pink
flamingos and palm trees. She gamely tries to explain to the
suits clustered around her exactly what it is that she does on
the Internet.
The short answer: Um, everything.
A habitué of Craigslist, Rachel says she has used the Net
to find a roommate, find her apartment in Hayes Valley, and find
her part-time job. If she gets lost and doesn't have Net access,
she'll call a friend who does and ask her to go to MapQuest and
get directions. She pays all her bills online and reads the news
on S.F. Gate and N.Y. Times.com, two sites she doesn't even
bother to refer to by the names of the newspapers they represent.
She's selling a car online right now.

Where Are The Women VCs?
04/12/2004 03:44 AMThis won't come to a surprise to most people who have dealt with
venture capitalists on a regular basis, but
there are very few women VCs, and the numbers are actually
decreasing. Since raising venture money is often about your
personal network, some are suggesting that this is one of the reasons
why women are having a tougher time getting their own businesses
started - they don't have as many connections within the "old boys
network" of venture money. This is definitely unfortunate (though, I
will say that some of the smartest VCs I do know are women). Still,
you would think that this would represent an opportunity for some
enterprising VCs. If qualified, women-run companies aren't getting
funded, then a smart VC firm (whether or not it had women partners)
should try to search them out, as they may be more likely to find a
worthwhile startup that other VCs will miss.

08/30/2004 07:23 PMIn an answer to feminist protests going on in New York this week, a
group of 900 Republican women gathered on Monday at the Waldorf
Astoria to hear about why women should rally behind George W. Bush.
The "W Stands for Women" event featured an all-star line-up of
Bush-Cheney chicas: the Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, who sat
silently on stage; the president’s sister, Doro Bush Koch, and mother,
76-year-old former first lady Barbara Bush; and Dick Cheney’s wife
Lynne and daughter Liz. Their approach -- seducing desirable female
voters with images of the President and Vice President as
good-hearted, hen-pecked husbands and fathers whipped into shrugging
submission by their estrogen-heavy clans -- was the kind of thing that
might make Gloria Steinem gag. But it worked with this undeniably
large gathering of women, who were rowdily relishing their electoral
heft.

Using Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser to surf the

That's the upshot of the discovery of yet another Internet Explorer
security hole being exploited by intruders bent on swiping personal
information from unwitting Internet users.
[...] "Internet Explorer's track record is such that the software
just cannot be trusted right now," says Jeremiah Grossman, CEO of
WhiteHat Security.

Win XP Sp2 Problem
Win XP Sp2 Problem
08/27/2004 01:56 PMIntroduced in Service Pack 2, along side many other security features,
Windows XP gained the "security center" (
screenshot). A nice addition, and a central place
for people to check their system's security status. So we thought.
eWeek and PC Magazine have published reports suggesting that the
system can be spoofed very easily, allowing potentially nasty programs
to perform un-wanted tasks. "Based on an anonymous tip, we looked
into the WMI and the Windows Security Center's use of it, and found
that it may not only be a security hole, but a crater in the wrong
hands. Due to the nature of WMI, the WSC could potentially allow
attackers to spoof the state of security on a user's system while
accessing data, infecting the system, or turning the PC into a zombie
for spam or other purposes."
The PC Magazine article explores the problem and how it can be
exploited in good depth. It makes very depressing reading for users
who had hoped that Microsoft had over-come this kind of problem with
Service Pack 2. Microsoft responded to the article suggesting that
they didn't think it was a problem at all; they added that you needed
to be running as an administrator for it to be an issue; true, PC Mag
agreed, but they also noted that XP Home runs (by default) as Admin,
and most users of XP Pro make themselves administators to save hassle
when installing and running programs.
Service Pack 2 is a necessary upgrade for all users, and everyone
should install it. However, as the article and Neowin recommend, don't
rely to heavily on these new security features. Ensure you update
Firewall / AV / Windows often, and check the status of your protection
often. Microsoft will never be able to be 100% safe / problem free,
but they are trying, and should be commended for their effort.

02/01/2005 09:28 PMand Tim Meehan Freud asked, "What does a user really want?" Ten-plus
years into web development, we still don't know. One of the biggest
problems in creating and delivering a site is how to decide, specify,
and communicate exactly what we're building and why. Use cases can
help answer these questions by providing a simple, fast means to
decide and describe the purpose of your project. In this quick-reading
article, Messieurs Carr and Meehan introduce use cases and their, uh,

Look At That: There Are Women Online Too
Look At That: There Are Women Online Too
04/29/2004 02:42 PMNot quite sure that this is really all that surprising, but Yahoo! has
put together a study (mainly targeted at their advertisers) pointing
out that
women
actually use the internet too. In fact, it's the "leading media
of choice" among women, and overall comes only after work, sleep, and
spending time with family as being the most important time spent. The
study notes that women use the internet at work, and are good at
multitasking - having work-related and non-work-related sites open at
the same time and flipping back and forth between the two. They found
that women believe surfing non-work sites at work is fine, since they
tend to do more work outside of the office as well - and they're also
spending more time at the office. The folks at Yahoo! seem positively
shocked that women (gasp!) actually use
search as well.
"The other thing that I think that was a revelation [for us] and that
has been a common consensus is that women are task-oriented, but this
research shows that they do use the Internet for searching and
browsing--it's not just for destination-related activities." And to
think, before this, Yahoo! apparently thought that only men used
search. Maybe all the women have been over at Google...

Women Want Wireless
Women Want Wireless
12/02/2003 12:18 PMWondering whether to go with chocolate or flowers for the special
woman in your life? You might be better off going with a nice 3G
mobile phone network. A new study by the folks at Siemens (who
certainly are a bit on the biased side, since they want to sell more
3G equipment) says that
women are big
fans of what UMTS 3G wireless technology can do for them.
However, they point out, the women are more interested in how the
technology is useful, rather than what it is. This, of course, seems
pretty obvious, and is exactly what we were talking about back in
October when we wondered why anyone would bother doing a study looking
at whether or not people
knew what
UMTS is. That doesn't matter. What UMTS is useful for is what
matters - and apparently, the European women Siemens studied agree
with us. Of course, it's no surprise to those of us at Techdirt that
women like useful gadgets. For years, we've been pointing to
study
a> after study
saying that "chicks dig gadgets." On the wireless front, earlier
this year there was a study saying that
women
felt text messages showed how much the sender cared more than
things like flowers and chocolate (though, that study seemed a bit
questionable). Still, it's a bit more evidence that the stereotype of
guys and their gadgets may be a bit outdated.

01/28/2004 03:38 PMIt's no secret that techie professions seem to attract more men than
women. However, it's reasonable to ask if this is a vicious cycle
that feeds on itself? An attendee at a Microsoft conference
introducing their next generation operating system to the software
companies they hope will write applications for it, noticed that
almost
everyone in the room was male. That suggests that the folks
writing the applications are almost all going to be male. He wonders
if that's going to be a problem, because the software being developed
is only going to be written from the male perspective.
