iPod is
great for playback, but it's not much use when it comes to recording.
Try Edirol's R-1
instead: palm-sized, integrated stereo microphone, and recording to
CompactFlash. With 1GB of CF running about $70 (the R-1 costs under
$400), removable media is the way to go. And as opposed to cheap
consumer audio gadgets, this box records absolutely clean; even the
built-in stereo mic sounds terrific (check out the audio samples).
The extras are just as impressive: there's a built-in metronome and
tuner for practicing, plus built-in digital effects for EQ, noise
reduction, and reverb, and even software simulation of different
microphone types -- you can even fake a vintage mic. When you're ready
to off-load your recordings, you can plug into your computer via USB
2.0 (or use onboard digital out or analog in/out). See CDM for more details and discussion. If
you're a video/audio pro, check out the hard drive-based 4-track R-4.

Win XP SP2 "turns Firewire 800 into
Firewire 100"
08/12/2004 02:38 PMThe moderator of the RME forum has warned that installing Windows XP
SP2 can lead to the bus speed being limited to 100Mbit/s. Matthias
Carstens posted the message on the RME forum yesterday, but says it's
not a problem particular to RME products. He said: "It affects
any Firewire 800 device. If you have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800
hard disk, go see the bits come one by one through the Firewire
cable".
RME, he said, was aware of the problem for some time, but "didn't
really imagine that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an
existing standard. We just downloaded the final public version and it
is simply unbelievable". He said that some companies are trying
to sell Firewire 800 drivers so everything will be hunky-dory. But, he
said, these drivers probably won't work correctly with a Fireface
800.

Firewire or USB NAS
Firewire or USB NAS
08/05/2004 03:10 AMI just picked up an exter
nal Seagate 160GB hard drive with the intention of using it as a
primary backup device for my home office. I can easily plug it into
any machine via USB or
Firewire and back the computer up.
While I was setting up the backup scheduling for my laptop,
however, I realized that I can’t really create a schedule. My
laptop is very mobile—it moves from room to room and place to
place with me. I can’t expect to have the drive’s USB
connection plugged into my laptop at any given time. If I schedule the
backup to run at 1am, I would need to make sure I have the laptop on
my desk and connected in order for the backup to succeed.
What would be great is a small IP addressable gadget that I could
plug this drive into so that it could become a simple Network Attached
Storage (NAS) device. That way my laptop could be backed up over my
wireless net from anywhere in the house.
Something like this might exist already but I didn’t turn
anything up in a few moments of research.
