Is the Microsoft Pipeline Now Officially
Unblocked?
08/18/2004 04:39 PMMicrosoft's top brass has become fond of saying that Microsoft's got a
lot of innovative new products in the pipeline. But what they haven't
admitted is that their pipeline' has been in serious need of some
Roto-Rooting for more than a year.
In recent months, whenever Microsoft was running late with a product,
officials blamed Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and/or tougher
internal security criteria in general. So now that SP2 is officially
out (it was released to manufacturing August 6), can we expect the
slip-date blame-game to become a thing of the past? Hardly.

Register: is Orkut TOS a deja vu of
controversial, discarded Microsoft TOS?
02/10/2004 02:51 AMIn the
Register, an interesting piece on Orkut's terms of
service, which danah
previously criticized, and Cory
described here as "craptacular":
Orkut's terms of service harbor a nasty payload --
"By submitting, posting or displaying any Materials on or through the
orkut.com service, you automatically grant to us a worldwide,
non-exclusive, sublicenseable, transferable, royalty-free, perpetual,
irrevocable right to copy, distribute, create derivative works of,
publicly perform and display such Materials." -- It's startlingly
similar to the Microsoft Passport Terms which caused a storm of
outrage two years ago, a reader points out. (...) Microsoft was forced
to amend [its] terms five days after our first story, amidst threats
of defections.
I don't imagine that the folks behind Orkut are evil people, and I
wonder what their response is to the
Reg article -- and to
concerns voiced by present and former Orkut members. In a similar
flap, users publicly lambasted phonecam-blog service
Textamerica last December over a draconian TOS; to their credit,
Textamerica modified it promptly.

interesting. "

Chromeless Phish
Chromeless Phish
06/16/2004 09:14 PM
When I built the visual
spoofing demo, I could have done it in several ways including
chromeless window
but I went for the simplest way. It turns out that some smart
phisher recently
launched a chromeless window-based phishing attack. Following
is screenshot
of the browser window showing the phishing site which was still
active at 11:51AM.
The webpage and the URL portion of the addressbar is fake.
What's happening
is that the phishing site opened a chromeless window to overlay the
fake URL over
the real address which can be discerned by dragging another window
over. It's
using a IE 5.5 specific feature to float the fake URL over
everything. The interesting
thing about this trick is that it can potentially defeat many
phishmark implementations
such as my own 9-block
phishmark. PassMark and background-based
phishmarks are still effective though.

Would You Get Caught? Go Phish!
04/12/2005 06:10 AMA week ago,
MailFrontier launched an online phishing IQ test
to see just how many users would get caught out by e-mails they
received. The results of the first week make scary reading. So far,
nearly 12,000 people have tried the test - and 92% of them got at
least one wrong answer.
In a similar US version, taken by more than 300,000 people, the
average score was under 70%, The average UK user got seven out of ten
- just 7% got them all right. In America, 96% got at least one answer
wrong.
A MailFrontier spokesman said: "The 10 test emails are all
real-life examples caught by our users. This means that, had they
appeared in people's email systems in real life, a significant number
would not be able to tell a real email from a fraudulent one."

Companies Team Up To Catch Some Phish
Companies Team Up To Catch Some Phish
06/15/2004 09:08 PMAnti-phishing software is not new. We wrote about it
a
couple months ago, when it looked like individual sites such as
eBay were coming out with their own anti-phishing tools. For the most
part, these were only helpful for very specific phishing scams (i.e.,
those directed at eBay users) and no one is interested in downloading
a separate anti-phishing app for each and every site they visit. So,
now, a group of tech companies and retailers are
teaming up to come up with
a standard method of fighting phishing scams. They call it the
the Trusted Electronic Communications Forum (TECF) and hope to come up
with a more standardized way of fighting phishing scams. Of course,
since phishing is mostly a social engineering scam, it's unclear how
much help a bit of technology will be in stopping it. The group
admits that their goal isn't just to come up with technology
solutions, but best practices and techniques to better track down the
scammers. In other words, the goal is really just to educate both law
enforcement and users about the risks of phishing scams. Of course,
if Nigerian 419 scams are any example, it will be quite some time
before they can reach those who are most vulnerable to these types of
scams.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-017:
Vulnerability in Crystal Reports Web
Viewer Could Allow Information
Disclosure and Denial of Service
(842689)
07/13/2004 12:00 PMThis update resolves a newly-discovered vulnerability in Crystal
Reports and Crystal Enterprise from Business Objects. Microsoft Visual
Studio .NET 2003 (all versions) and Outlook 2003 with Business Contact
Manager redistribute Crystal Reports and are therefore affected by the
vulnerability. Microsoft Business Solutions CRM 1.2 redistributes
Crystal Enterprise, which is affected in the same way. The
vulnerability is documented in the Vulnerability Details section of
this bulletin.
An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could
retrieve and delete files through the Crystal Reports and Crystal
Enterprise Web viewers on an affected system. The number of files of
files that are impacted by this vulnerability would depend on the
security context of the affected component that is used by the Crystal
Web viewer.

week-long international wardrive found 288,000 access points in their
survey, more than 50 percent of which had no security enabled. Since
these were passive scans, it's impossible to tell whether those access
points were inside or outside corporate firewalls, and thus not open
portals, but it's likely that the overwhelming majority were just
plain open. Nearly 30 percent had the default SSID or network name
set....
Political clarity...
Political clarity...
10/31/2003 07:16 AMFor many recent Labour voters the last couple of years have been a
bit of a troubling time - with some of the actions of the government
(particularly with regard to the War in Iraq) seeming to be violently
and almost universally at odds with the views of the electorate. As a
result, I think it's far to say that their popularity has waned. But
while people have become vaguely disillusioned with Labour, the other
political parties haven't really seemed to be particularly inspiring
any kind of reaction at all. In a way it's a bit of a surprise -
whether you like the policies or not, it's difficult to deny that the
Conservative policy raft has been more interesting than it has been
for a long time. But that doesn't seem to have made much of a
difference either way. On the whole - with the exception of occasional
terrifying statements by Oliver Letwin, the only things they do
that get any press or interest from the public have been their
bi-weekly attempts to commit televised hari-kiri.
There's a whole range of reasons why they might not have made
sufficient political hay recently. Obviously there's the increase in
general political disillusionment. Certainly the current government
hasn't done an awful lot to stem that particular tide. Also, no one
realistically thinks that the Conservative party can quite hold
themselves together long enough to put any of their shiny new (if
occasionally barking) policies into practice? Their regular
apocalyptic tailspins have made them the "Kenny" of Westminter's
"South Park".
Another position - and one I tend to subscribe to - is that because
they've simply tried to be perceived as vaguely socially tolerant (and
had a "nice" non-threatening leader), minority groups, trade unions
and the like have stopped thinking of them as an actual danger
any more. And while that group has had their anxieties eased a bit
that doesn't mean that they (or other people in the centre-ground) are
yet convinced that they're trustworthy, representative of public
opinion or - well - totally in touch with reality... And while they're
waiting for evidence, they're quite comfortable to background
them...
Well as far as I'm concerned, the discomfort remains and the
anxiety is back. That's not to say that I think Michael Howard
has much of a chance of being Prime Minister. And it's not to say that
I think the party will be any more united under his leadership. But -
if they put him in charge of their party - they will have made certain
parts of this argument crystal clear for me again. Instead of being
able to view the Conservative party as representing an alternative -
perhaps more market / efficiency driven - approach to running the
country, appointing Michael Howard is no more or less than running up
the Conservative Skull and Crossbones again and setting sail for the
easy targets of cheap political swag.
Tom Watson has put up a post that reminds us of
the facts about Michael Howard. There's terrifying stuff in there.
I'm going to highlight a few of the ones that scare me most
personally, but please - read the full list...
"As Home Secretary, he believed that the answer to crime
was simply to lock more people up: "an increase in the number of
criminals in prison leads to a large fall in crime" (POLITICS,
MORALITY AND THE NATION STATE lecture, ST. MICHAEL CHURCH, CORNHILL,
CITY OF LONDON, 10 January 2003)"
"Howard criticised Jack
Straw's decision to detain General Pinochet and actively campaigned
for his release: "We think this has gone on far too long. We think he
should be sent back to Chile." (BBC Interview, 26 November 1998)"
"Howard opposed the introduction of the Human Rights Act."
"Howard was judged to have flouted the European Convention on
Human Rights following unlawfully delaying the release of five
long-serving IRA prisoners - the SEVENTH time he had been found to be
acting illegally in just two years as Home Secretary. (September
1995)"
"Howard voted against equal rights for homosexuals by opposing
lowering the homosexual age of consent to 16"
And if you still needed evidence that this man must not be
allowed to become Prime Minister at any cost, then how about these two
draconian, vile-worded and dangerously regressive/oppressive
policies:
"Howard was the Minister in Charge of bringing in the Poll
Tax in 1988. Even after Thatcher had gone, and after the poll tax
riots, he insisted he still believed in the policy (July 1991)"
"Howard was the Minister who brought in Clause 28 of the Local
Government Act banning the "promotion" of homosexuality (March
1988)"

Moral Clarity
06/30/2004 09:15 AM
The Moral Values Party With thousands of
Republicans set to invade the city this summer, high-priced escorts
and strippers are preparing for one grand old party.
Agencies are flying in extra call girls from around the globe to meet
the expected demand during the Aug. 30-Sept. 2 gathering at Madison
Square Garden.
"We have girls from London, Seattle, California, all coming in
for that week," said a madam at a Manhattan escort service.
"It's the week everyone wants to work."
"It's going to be big," agreed one operator at a midtown
escort service.

Vonage Sued Over Lack Of Clarity In 911
Info
03/22/2005 05:03 PMThe issue of VoIP having 911 service gets way too much attention.
Most of the major VoIP players already have some sort of solution in
place, and it seems to be improving over time. However, apparently
the attorney general in Texas doesn't think Vonage is doing enough.
It's not that they don't offer 911 service, but that
they
don't make things clear enough to customers who are signing up.
The whole case seems a bit confusing. Vonage clearly does offer 911
service, so saying that users "aren't clearly informed that the
service excludes 911" is incorrect. It does include 911, you just
have to follow the instructions -- and Vonage claims they make every
effort to get people to follow the instructions. Not only that, but
the company seems to
make the
process fairly straightforward, though it could be improved. This
seems more like political grandstanding in the wake of some
negati
ve publicity recently concening VoIP and 911 service in Texas.
