A Startup Guy?

A Startup Guy? 04/06/2005 11:26 PM
Today I was interviewing someone for a job at Yahoo. Near the end of the interview, I asked one of the questions I always ask: "Do you have any questions for me about Yahoo?" He asked one that nobody has ever asked me before. After confirming that I'd been at Yahoo since some time in late 1999, he asked "Why are you still here?" In the course of explaining why I'm still at Yahoo, I mentioned that fact that I've...

Startup Execs Harder To Come By?

Startup Execs Harder To Come By? 09/14/2004 06:22 PM
While VCs are back to funding startups, without a really hot IPO market, it seems that many startups are having difficulty attracting top-notch executives. At least that's what the article suggests. Apparently, execs don't necessarily want to jump on the next hot thing, without some form of stability (read: more cash) or a higher likelihood of an IPO (read: potential for a lot more cash). Of course, it sounds like some of the requirements companies are putting out are a bit stringent. I agree that experienced execs are very useful to startups, but too often it seems that startups look for the perfect exec who has done exactly the same thing in the past. Those candidates aren't always the best. They may have gotten lucky in a previous startup and now feel they know everything, while a smarter, hungrier less "experienced" exec may be able to do more to drive a startup forward. Either way, if the IPO market takes off again, it's likely these missing startup execs will return -- and that might not be a good thing. A startup exec who jumps ship just because of the opportunity for a big cash payout isn't always going to be the best person to help build a sustainable company. You want someone who believes in the long-term potential of the company and its vision -- not the short-term potential of an IPO.

John Battelle's new startup

John Battelle's new startup 04/17/2005 01:29 PM
David Pescovitz: Congratulations to Boing Boing band manager John Battelle on the launch of his next media startup! We're thrilled to be FM Publishing's first lab rat. From the new company blog:
For now, the company is called "FM Publishing." The "FM" stands for "Federated Media" - a nod toward the fundamental idea behind the company - that of federation, as opposed to ownership (it's also sort of a nod to the evolution of a medium - e.g. radio going from AM to FM). The company is a publishing business focused on high quality content - that should come as no surprise to those of you who know what I love to do. But the difference is that I do not plan to "own" most of the content that will be critical to FM. Instead, I plan to partner with site authors, acting as a platform which provides important services to them - revenue (in the form of advertising), back end support, and the like. In essence, FM will act as a publisher to sites which need and want a publisher. We don't plan to take a lot of folks on, initially, but hope to grow over time.

FM was inspired by the things I learned writing the book, as well as running Searchblog and acting as Band Manager for Boing Boing. For now, nothing is really changing with regard to my role at Boing Boing, but when FMP is up and running, it's my goal to move BB's business services over to FMP, and the kind folks behind BB have agreed - at least in principle. I still have to deliver what I say I can deliver, and that's non trivial....

I'm not allergic to financial investors - folks who put money in with the express intent of getting a lot more money out - but for now, I prefer to keep it strategic, and small. In fact, I hope to build FMP in a very Web 2.0 way - a lightweight business model focused on innovation in assembly, driven by the force of many - you get the picture.

Boomerang Entrepreneurship: How To Sell
The Same Startup Twice

Boomerang Entrepreneurship: How To Sell
The Same Startup Twice
07/14/2004 08:57 PM
In 1999 the entrepreneurs behind a photo hosting company named Webshots sold their company to Excite@Home for $82.5 million. Not bad. Even better, though, was that a few years later, after Excite@Home went bankrupt, the founders bought Webshots back at an $80 million discount, paying just $2.4 million. That was pretty smart of them... because now, two years later, they've flipped the company again, this time to CNET, for $70 million, $60 million of which is in cold hard cash (they've obviously learned the value). You have to wonder if this agreement has a buy back option as well. While most news stories focusing on the deal are comparing it to Google' s similar Picasa purchase yesterday, this bit of yo-yo startup reselling is a much more interesting story.

Dot Com Startup Charged With Defrauding
Investors

Dot Com Startup Charged With Defrauding
Investors
09/20/2004 05:07 PM
The SEC has charged a New York dot com startup for misleading investors to raise $2.3 million. Apparently, the dot com set up a boiler room type of operation, and would say just about anything to investors to get them to put in their money, such as saying that the company was about to go public. Apparently, they sold nearly 7 million unregistered shares this way to 350 investors in 1999 and 2000. While, these days, it's no surprise to find out that dot com startups during the bubble could find investors with too much money and no interest in doing even the slightest due diligence, you have to wonder why it took four or five years to catch this scam.
