Bill Gates' employees were way ahead of the boss when it came to blogging, but it's good to see Gates' endorsement (BBC) nonetheless. If he gets it -- and he obviously does -- then a lot of other folks are sure to follow. I wonder how soon blogging will become a natural, integral part of the operating system. RSS would be a good start.

bl0gging the DNC convention bl0gging 07/27/2004 02:42 PM
While much of the blogging world has been ga-ga over getting into the Democratic National Convention, it's tough to find anything interesting going on among the convention bloggers (to their credit, go turn on CSPAN today and see for yourself how boring it is). While our own Jessamyn is there (here are profiles of everyone going), I've found the strange CNN/Technorati partnership to be the most useful thing. Technorati founder David Sifry is basically doing a metafilter of all convention blogs over on CNN as the daily blog roundup, highlighting the posts worth reading among the participants.

Who Needs A TV Schedule?

Who Needs A TV Schedule? 05/24/2004 03:05 AM
This won't be news to anyone with a digital video recorder like a TiVo, but people are beginning to wake up to the idea that TV schedules won't mean much in the future. With the combination of a TiVo-style home server system, and the ability to download any television program you might ever want to see, the future of television is much more about watching what you want, when you want, than many people expected. While the idea of "video on demand" has been around for years - many TV execs expected it to all be centrally run, and the rise of TiVo-like systems took them by surprise. It may not be that long until the only thing that really requires a "TV schedule" will be live events where some people just can't handle not seeing them live - such as sporting events or awards shows. However, even then, many people will be perfectly happy catching up later. News events are a bit trickier to predict, but the nightly news roundup makes less and less sense when everyone is getting their news in real-time via the internet already.

Year of Firefox: Right On Schedule

Year of Firefox: Right On Schedule 09/16/2004 10:29 PM

I write back in February:

I predict that Firefox browser marketshare will be near 20% by end of year 2004.  It's that good and getting better.

And browser marketshare numbers so far:

2004 IE 6 IE 5 O 7 Moz NN 3 NN 4 NN 7
September 68.3% 6.5% 2.5% 17.7% 0.2% 0.2% 1.3%
August 70.3% 7.0% 2.3% 15.5% 0.3% 0.3% 1.4%
July 71.0% 7.7% 2.3% 13.8% 0.3% 0.3% 1.4%
June 72.4% 8.3% 2.3% 11.8% 0.3% 0.3% 1.4%
May 72.6% 9.2% 2.2% 11.0% 0.3% 0.3% 1.4%
April 72.4% 10.1% 2.1% 10.3% 0.3% 0.3% 1.4%
March 72.1% 10.7% 2.1% 9.6% 0.4% 0.4% 1.4%
February 71.5% 11.5% 2.2% 9.0% 0.4% 0.4% 1.5%
January 71.3% 12.8% 2.1% 8.2% 0.4% 0.5% 1.5%

Actual marketshare of Firefox is less than the 17.7% because this statistic does not distinguish between Mozilla and Firefox.  My guestimate for actual Firefox marketshare is 12~14%.

So it looks like my prediction is still on track.
