Like any good fledgling businessman, Mike Rowe knew he needed a catchy name for his website design company. And being possessed of a sense of humour and the cheekiness of a typical 17-year-old, and given his name, what better than to register his Internet domain name as mikerowesoft.com?

Canadian teen makes money from feud with Microsoft: Mike Rowe sold all the correspondence between himself and Microsoft for about $1,000.

Bids for a 25-page letter from Microsoft lawyers, an inch-thick book outlining their case to the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva and e-mails between Rowe and lawyers had reached as much as 120,000 dollars (90,000 US dollars) during the 10-day online auction, but those were dismissed as bogus.

Mike Rowe Settlement

Mike Rowe Settlement 01/24/2004 05:04 AM
Microsoft has reached an agreement with Mike Rowe, the Canadian teenager who was using the Web site mikerowesoft.com in alleged violation of the Microsoft tradmark. In exchange for Mike turning over the mikerowesoft.com domain to Microsoft, the company has:
  • Agreed to help direct any traffic from mikerowesoft.com to Rowe's new Web site (which he's currently working on) to make sure he doesn’t lose any business. The company will pay any out-of-pocket expenses related to this change, including cost associated with changing over to the new url and any other expenses. (The Rowe family is now calculating those expenses.)
  • Invited Mike and his family on to the Microsoft campus for the company's Microsoft Research Tech Fest in March. The company will pay for the travel and accommodations. No promises, but it's possible he could meet Bill Gates, depending on the Microsoft chairman's schedule, Desler said.
  • Agreed to pay for Mike to get Microsoft Certification training. Depending on which courses he chooses, this could lead him to become a certified support technician, or system administrator, or something along those lines.
  • Agreed to give Mike a subscription to MSDN, the Microsoft Developer Network Web site, with various tools for developing software around Microsoft products.
  • Agreed to give Mike an Xbox game system, complete with a number of games of his choosing.

Kids Only Domain Takes Three Years To
Get 21 Sites
06/05/2005 11:57 PM
More than three years ago, when US politicians set up the "kids-only" domain of .kids.us, we wondered how many sites would actually bother with it, noting the "chicken and egg" problem the domain faced. We now have an answer. Three years into the experiment, there are a grand total of 21 sites hosted in the special .kids.us domain. Yes: twenty one. A thriving community. It probably doesn't help that to host there you have to pay about $400 a year for registration and "content review" vs. $7 or so to register a .com. Somehow, we're confident that .xxx won't face the same problem.

Microsoft Forgets To Renew Domain...

You would think folks at Microsoft would be a little more on top of things. Back in 1999 there was a big story when Microsoft forgot to renew their passport.com domain name, meaning that many people couldn't access their Hotmail accounts. A guy who wanted to access his Hotmail account went to Network Solutions and paid the $35 to renew the domain and gave it to Microsoft. Once Microsoft realized what happened they sent him a $500 check (which eventually made its way to a charity). It appears a similar situation has happened. Microsoft apparently forgot to renew the hotmail.co.uk domain, and some random user bought the domain. He's been trying to contact Microsoft and they've been ignoring him. They apparently only realized something had happened when a reporter from The Register called them to check up on the story. Nominet, who runs the co.uk domain registry, says that this should be a lesson for folks who don't pay attention to their domain renewal notices. Microsoft still hasn't made an official comment on the matter.
