Opera Announces Real-Time Speech
Technology
04/01/2005 06:55 AMOpera Software's R&D department today announced the discovery of a
new technology dubbed 'Opera SoundWave' - a platform-independent
speech solution for short- and medium-range interpersonal
communication. Based on open standards, Opera's patent-pending P2P
speech technology uses analogue signals carried through open air,
enabling users to communicate in real-time without the use of
computers or mobile phones.
Opera is spearheading the development to let people communicate
without using a keyboard, and the new SoundWave technology was
accidently discovered during an R&D study to speech-enable Opera's
e-mail client. One of Opera's desktop developers needed to find an
alternative way to relay a message to his colleague at a time when the
e-mail server was down, and was startled to notice that his verbal
outcry was intercepted and understood immediately.

Review: VMware 4.5.2
09/15/2004 01:47 PMVirtual machine software allows you to run one operating system (and
its applications) from within the environment of another. For years
the most recognized name in virtual machine software for the x86
architecture has been VMware, whose eponymous industry-leading product
supports a wide variety of guest operating systems. Recently EMC Corp.
bought VMware, and has since released VMware Workstation 4.5 for $199.
The most recent release is 4.5.2, which adds 64-bit host operating
system support. There isn't much that VMware Workstation can't do,
except perhaps achieve the level of performance that a genuine
installation of the guest operating system enjoys.
Doom 3 Review
Doom 3 Review
08/11/2004 11:40 AMDoom 3 one of the scariest video games ever made: I'm
not much of a gamer, and I'm definately not much of a horror
afficionado. I'll leave this one for those who are.
What you see in this M-rated game is definitely NOT for children or
the squeamish. The vivid three-dimensional graphics, a true step
forward for computer games, allow for some extremely gross death
scenes involving large quantities of blood and various human and
monster guts. [...]
One nice touch adds a great deal of tension: you have a flashlight
that never runs out of power, but you can't use it at the same time as
your weapons. [...]
Doom 3 doesn't revolutionize computer games as we know them.
Rather, it polishes the horror-themed first-person shooter genre to a
high gloss.
It's not going to provoke any deep thoughts or philosophical
debate, but anyone looking for a good scare will enjoy this gorgeous
nail-biter.
SimCity is more my
speed.
