DeveloperWorks Linux is now offering developers a new software evaluation kit on DVD which allows users to build applications and Web services and deploy them on IBM middleware for Linux. The free two-disk kit, which requires a DeveloperWorks registration, contains trials of Big Blue's newest products, tools, and information resources.

LINUXWORLD -- The main theme of this show ought to be, "We now offer Linux support!" Most of the companies making this boast -- often in press releases with all-caps headlines -- are proprietary software vendors, and most of their products are utilities of some sort aimed at enterprise users, not at consumer-level desktop users.

A line of Dell Inc. desktop computers running a version of the Linux operating system will be sold in Europe by a reseller, broadening alternative offerings to Microsoft Corp.'s ubiquitous Windows software. The computers being sold online by Questar of Milan, Italy, will ship with Lindows Inc.'s Linspire operating system -- in English- or Italian-language versions -- and will receive Dell technical support, Questar said Tuesday. Dell operates a technical-support call center in Twin Falls.
