Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed

Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

wristpda.jpg imageFor those of you who don't mind adorning your wrist with what appears to be a small, metal-framed end table comes the Wrist PDA from Fossil. Possibly the first wrist watch to come with a stylus, (albeit one that looks like the nail file from a mini-Leatherman) Fossil has jam-packed every ounce of PalmOS goodness they could into a little square. As a bonus, they've graciously packed it in an adorable orange tin which you can later use to store your Tinker Toys or fingers collection. FossilWristPDA.com has a surprisingly balanced review/getting started guide that gets only a little bit smarmy (and we'll cut them some slack, since they've obviously been anxiously sitting on that domain for a while). It seems that writing on the watch has a bit of a learning curve, but using most third party software works well and allows you to pack quite a bit of functionality onto your wrist. It's only taken like 3 years to get here.

fossil_pda.jpg imageTheRegister has gotten their paws on a Fossil Wrist PDA, the FX2008, and posted their review of it. After having waited "an extra year," the reviewer says it has some serious pitfalls — it's too damn big and has too short a battery life. One is a critical blow to the "watch" aspect, and the other a critical blow to the "PDA" aspect. I'll let you figure out which is which. Fatality.

Your entry on the HK Walkie Talkie phenomenon is 100% accurate. All the electronics markets are filled with FRS radios and the like. I've even seen people using them to meet up on the MTR (Subway).

He also says that walkie-talkies that you wear on your wrist (like the one pictured at right) are most definitely the ones to be seen with.

MUD Scraps

MUD Scraps 09/15/2004 01:49 AM

These are just MUD/IRC/IM related scraps of thought trails accumulated over the past couple of weeks.  Actually, most of them are resurfaced scraps from long past but I turned them over like one would a flipjack so I thought I should park them on my blog so I can look it up next time they resurface.

  • IRC channels as rooms in a MUD - an IRC channel is, in essence, a bunch of people talking in a room.  Everyone can hear and see each other (unless they are whispering or lurking invisibly).  It's just like being at a same location in a MUD.
  • IM session inside a MUD - IM is like talking inside a private room in a MUD.  Overlaying the room metaphor gives persistence to sessions and storage for shared objects.
  • Wiki page as a room, an object, or a thread of conversation inside a MUD.
  • Topic or thread of conversation as an object - threads of conversations are constantly created and updated and 'leads' to the threads can be found by where, when, who, and what.  So if you enter a room where a conversation took place there some time ago, you can find it and, if you want, pocket it to keep track.  In a sense, you are subscribing to a feed.
  • Googling conversations in IRC and MUD - this is self evident so I won't explain.  A hack implementation can just generate a web page per thread of conversation and let Google index them.
  • NPC as IRC bots - enough said other than that they should be easily programmable, customizable, and deployable.
    • Fido, open the report.
    • Fido> Which report?  I have...
  • MUD objects with MIME types and custom renderers - images are displayed, audio and movies are played, spreadsheet is displayed using Excel, etc.  Thumbnails of these objects are displayed when 'see' command is invoked.

Guns and jets

Guns and jets 03/08/2004 11:03 PM

My friend Brad, a jet pilot with heroic flying skills, graciously agreed to help me with the Commercial maneuvers and precision landings today.  We hauled N505WT out of its hangar and headed out to Worcester with the GPS turned off and the gyro-stabilized compass covered up.  Flying along at 2500' it was actually a bit tough to pick out landmarks from the VFR chart.  After 10 landings we decided it was time for some of the free cookies that they bake at the Worcester FBO (airplane gas station) so we taxied into the ramp.  The scene was one of utter desolation.  The main terminal building looked empty.  The last scheduled airline flights from Worcester ceased about one year ago.  The general aviation area contained a small collection of cheap piston-powered airplanes (like mine!).  At Bedford, N505WT's home airport, there is always at least $300 million of private jets on the ramp, waiting to take hard-working public corporation executives from golf game to weekend house.  The woman behind the desk confirmed that not a single jet had landed at Worcester all day.

As we were starting up N505WT a good-sized business jet was taxiing in.  A van drove up to meet the passengers at the side of the $10 million twin-turbojet-powered plane.  "What luxury!" we thought.  "This is the only way to travel.  They're probably just back from a resort in Mexico."  A couple of guys got out of the van and walked around the plane wearing guns.  Security for someone important!  The one passenger got out, a teenager wearing a rather plain jumpsuit.  Then we noticed that his legs were chained together...

Yet another thing that America's richest and poorest citizens share:  traveling by private jet.

Oh yes, speaking of guns.  A friend from the MIT Media Lab sent around a home video yesterday.  It seems that he has put the filmmaking skills that he learned there to good use and has made effective use of the Internet in distributing his creation.  Click right on the following link and then "Save Target As" before playing from your own hard disk in a separate player window (100 or 200% size is best): boyhood dream.

Twenty years ago people talked about Arpanet/Internet leading to an explosion in video creativity and distribution but it just wasn't practical with the available bandwidth and percentage of consumers hooked up.  Today all the pieces are in place.

The Improved Web Kit

The Improved Web Kit 06/17/2005 02:53 PM

We've already received and committed several patches from external contributors and the repository has only been live for a few hours!

As some of you have already noticed (those of you that built), the new Web Kit not only passes Acid2, but it's also substantially faster at loading Web pages and at handling JavaScript. It contains a number of additional performance improvements that went in post-Tiger.

One question people have asked is "Does this have to replace my system frameworks?" The answer is "No." You can run this custom version of Web Kit with a particular instance of Safari without replacing your system frameworks. The run-safari script we provided does this for you. If you study what it does, you'll see that you can easily try out your own WebKit apps with the new frameworks as well. We in fact encourage you to do this so that you can make sure your apps are functioning properly with the latest WebKit.
