James Madison Papers

James Madison Papers 04/02/2005 07:30 AM
James Madison Papers
http:// memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/madison_papers/

The Library of Congress announced the release of the James Madison Papers, now available on the Library's American Memory Web at the above link. The James Madison Papers from the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress consist of approximately 12,000 items captured in some 72,000 digital images. They document the life of the man who came to be known as the "Father of the Constitution" through correspondence, personal notes, drafts of letters and legislation, an autobiography, legal and financial documents, and miscellaneous manuscripts. The collection is organized into six series dating from 1723 to 1836. Beginning with a selection of his father's letters, the series moves through Madison's years as a student, and as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and include extensive notes of the debates during his three-year term in the Continental Congress (1779-82). Notes and a memoranda document Madison's pivotal role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the Virginia ratification convention of 1788. Other materials reflect the nine years that Madison spent in the House of Representatives and his tenure as Secretary of State during Thomas Jefferson's presidency. Correspondence and notes trace his two terms as the fourth president of the United States, illuminating the origins and course of the War of 1812 and the post-war years of his presidency and subsequent retirement. The collection also includes a complete copy of Thomas Jefferson's notes from the Continental Congress of 1776. Notable correspondents include Dolley Payne Madison, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Edmund Randolph, Noah Webster, and Secretary of War James Armstrong, whose correspondence with Madison fills an entire series. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Waiting for Intel's Madison

Waiting for Intel's Madison 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
Madison, Intel's third-generation Itanium chip, is on the horizon, and the server market is abuzz. Will this be the processor that gives Intel a solid toehold in the high-end server market, or will it be another embarrassment like the company's first-generation Itanium, Merced? And should IT managers delay server purchases until Madison is released?

Photos of "robots" carrying signs written in binary code. They're marching to support underpaid and overworked teaching assistants in Madison, Wisconsin. Such thoughtful 'bots. Correction: BoingBoing reader Ryan Whaley says, "They weren't supporting the teachers' union, it just happened to be going on at the same time. They planned it weeks ahead of time. They're all members of the somethingawful forums."

Amazing dining at Eleven Madison Park

Amazing dining at Eleven Madison Park 05/21/2004 05:16 PM
I've had my share of tasting menus but last night's six-course tasting menu at Eleven Madison Park was one of the best. With wonderful big windows looking onto the lush Madison Square Park, and an interior filled with flowers of all kinds, Eleven Madison Park's atmosphere got the evening off to a great start. The champagne that followed continued the thrill. Usually the tasting menu is a series of small plates, demonstrating the breadth and depth of the kitchen. At Eleven Madison Park, the breadth is more visible because they don't serve everyone the same dish. So each course was actually one thing for Jason and something different for me. Like a creamy pea flan with morels for one and asparagus with goat cheese for the other. Or skate in brown butter and cod. Arctic char and salmon. Each course we ate half of what was on the plate, then switched. So the six-course menu (which actually eight courses counting the tuna tartare amuse bouche and the chocolate soufflé) ended up providing eleven different things to eat. And wowzers, but where they good! The pea flan was creamy and sweet and the most beautiful shade of green. The four fish courses were each distinct, each wonderful. And the only course that was the same for both of us was a côte du boeuf -- beef -- that was perhaps the best piece of meat I've ever eaten in my life. It was such a great experience to have so many textures, so many flavors -- and with the wine flight we had to accompany it, so many different wine tastes -- that I wonder why I'd ever want just a larger plate of one thing. I am fully subscribed to the Thomas Keller school of thought when it comes to portion size: three or four bites is a wonderful amount, enough that you experience it and yet not so much your tongue tires of the flavors. Each last bite leaves you wanting more. And yet the next course comes and it's another exiting adventure and new flavors. I can still nearly taste the pea flan on my tongue! I definitely recommend Eleven Madison Park and hope to have the pleasure of dining again there someday.

Apple's iPod and other digital music players were clearly designed with Ben Folds, not Beethoven, fans in mind. But Lexington-area classical aficionados say overcoming some bugaboos is worth it for a player that serves their needs like no other. By Robert J. Hughes, Wall Street Journal

Georgia County May be First for WiMax 12/02/2003 04:55 PM
Intel is working with city leaders in Houston County, Georgia to discuss building what could be the first WiMax network in the country: Intel has a close relationship with Houston County High School because it has given the school a $30,000 wireless technology lab. The idea for the WiMax network hatched from that relationship. The plan is very much on the drawing board though, with no one yet volunteering to fund the network, which should cost around $2 million to build, including towers....

While Riverside County in California decided to sue California's Secretary of State, Kevin Shelley for decertifying electronic voting machines unless they put security measures in place, San Bernardino apparently decided that's too much trouble. Instead, they're just going to ignore the ban. They claim that the Secretary of State gave the approval for the voting machines once and now he can't go back on it. As far as they're concerned the ban never happened.

USA Today Quotes Etherlinx Founder as
Everyman
02/19/2004 11:23 AM
In this well-written, by-the-numbers article explaining Wi-Fi to mainstream readers, John Furrier, one of the founders of Etherlinx, is presented as an average user: I've met and talked with John several times, before and after he left Etherlinx well over a year ago, and he's an experienced Wi-Fi guy. No lack of props to him (and his decision to leave a firm he helped start that became a non-starter), but the reporter should have identified him as a current or former industry member, not an average Joe (or John). John reads this site, so we may get more information on this yet. A few weeks ago, The New York Times covered home Wi-Fi and used as its lead subject Oren Michels, who is the president of WiFinder, identifying him in his full-time day job as the head of a human resources benefits outsourcing firm. Surely there are actual consumers out there....
