Salesforce.com offers Microsoft Office
ties
01/19/2004 01:57 PM

Salesforce.com announced its new Office Edition, an upgrade to the Winter ’04 version of its hosted CRM applications that lets users access their CRM data from within Microsoft Office. The move promises to help Salesforce.com users increase their productivity, since it enables them to access key customer information hosted on Salesforce.com directly from within their Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook applications. The version is strictly a one-way link, however, and it does not allow users to upload data from those Office apps to Salesforce.com, the company said.

Microsoft Office 2003 offers self

Microsoft Office 2003 offers self
destructing documents
10/29/2003 01:16 AM
According to an article in NewScientist.com: Office 2003 features new versions of Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, along with various usability tweaks and new functionality. But the software also comes with the ability to let users control the way other people use the documents they create. This can be used to prevent other people forwarding, copying or even printing a protected email message or document. "It should work," says Simson Garfinkel, a computer forensics expert at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). '"But it could be defeated by a hostile user. There's no way you could prevent someone from taking a digital picture of the screen." ... The rights control feature in Office 2003 depends on having an intermediary computer system with Windows Server 2003 and a software package called Rights Management Service installed. A protected email message sent between two users is encrypted and the recipient's version of Outlook will check with the server to see if the user is allowed to edit, copy or forward the message. A time-stamp can also be applied to make the message unreadable after a certain date. While I suspect that people will quickly figure out how to break this first generation DRM with the equivalent of a magic marker or using the shift key, and of course the expired documents will still be on the (Windows) server, this is probably a pretty good indicator of where governments and corporations are headed, and Microsoft has a history of successfully iterating products. While others debate DRM, Microsoft is creating facts on the ground. Not an encouraging development....

The Data Assistant for Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003 provides an easy-to-use method of inserting and managing graphical data objects such as Visio drawings, and Excel charts and named ranges into PowerPoint presentations. There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use, and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

Apps
01/26/2004 01:10 AM
Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.

LucidLink Offers Free Small Office
Security Package

LucidLink Offers Free Small Office
Security Package
04/18/2005 02:47 PM
It's pretty extraordinary when there's competition for giving away security: On the small-office/home-office (SOHO) end of the market for Wi-Fi security products, there's an increasing trend to just give away products that can help very small number of users in the hopes that those users then adopt the for-fee products when they grow in scale or need. But it's a very nice development for SOHO warriors, to be sure. LucidLink joins this trend by dropping the price of their three-user package for secure WLAN connections from $99 down to zero. My guess is that it was a hard sell for that user category, and that becomes a great test tool for offices considering LucidLink. They can hook up this three-user version as a test before buying a multi-seat license. The three-user limit is simultaneous users. More can be registered in the system. LucidLink is a locally hosted 802.1X server package that uses proprietary client software for Windows 2000 and XP to make the connection. The server software requires Windows 2000 (any edition), XP, or Windows Server 2003. The next step up is a 10-user version of LucidLink for $449....
