New York Times on the avant-garde
New York Times on the avant-garde
09/20/2004 06:44 AM
David Pescovitz:
Margo
Jefferson, the NYT's Pulitzer-winning culture critic, has launched
a new occasional column dedicated to "avant-garde" art. (I've always
loved that term and I'm happy people are bringing it back into
fashion.) Jefferson's introductory column is insightful, smart, and,
most importantly, she doesn't take herself too seriously. I look
forward to the next installment!
When you hear the phrase avant-garde
1)You flip through your intellectual file folder looking for examples
(Dada, 12-tone music, modern dance, underground films, the Beats,
theater of the absurd, electronic music).
2) You experience a certain dread. (You ask yourself if you are the
only one in the gallery not getting the artist's joke, or worry that
you can't finish that book said to challenge narrative conventions so
boldly.)
3)You rage, "Where's the vision today, the energy?" You think back
longingly. Paris, 1913: Diaghilev's Ballets Russes hurl Stravinksy's
"Rite of Spring" at a shocked public. New York in the 1940's: Bird,
Diz and Monk lead the charge for the music that would be known as bop.
The 1960's and 70's: lofts, galleries, parks and churches shelter free
jazz, new music and every kind of performance. What does it take to
bring artists together to make brave new works?
I've felt each, and I'm about to start writing about the avant-garde
in occasional essays and pieces of criticism. Which brings up another
question: If an avant-garde is written about in a major newspaper like
this one, doesn't that prove that it has moved to the culture's
prosperous Midtown?

Can't Name Your Kid With A Dot Com In
China
12/30/2004 07:55 PMEarlier this year, we noted that China had told a father he
could
not name his kid "@", mainly because there was no good way to
pronounce it. Well, it appears that China really doesn't like people
naming their kids after internet related things. Not only is the "@"
out, but
so is naming
your kid with a .com. A father wanted to name his son Zhao.com,
but the registry office has rejected the name. Perhaps he should have
just gone straight to a domain registrar instead. Of course, here in
the US we have no such restrictions, leading to things like
kids
named 2.0.

Will China Really Go After Spammers?
Will China Really Go After Spammers?
09/15/2004 01:39 PMFor quite some time, it's been known that many spammers use Chinese
servers to send out spam. The Chinese government hadn't paid much
attention to spam, preferring to do more important things online like
blockin
g out Google. However, after realizing that (uh oh) political
activists might start using spam to get their message out, they
announced plans earlier this year to
crack
down on spam. It looks like it took them a few months to realize
it wasn't as easy as they've expected, so they've now
agreed to work with foreign anti-spam firms to try to
tackle the problem. These anti-spam firms are excited about this,
because they think with some cooperation from the Chinese government
and Chinese ISPs they'll be able to do a lot more in stopping spam
coming from China. Of course, it won't be long until spammers move on
to some other country (or to various zombie systems). Still, for all
the talk about how China is now interested in stopping spam, it is
worth remembering that the only reason they got interested originally
was to block political speech. So, is it really a coincidence that
Symantec's anti-virus software is suddenly deciding that a program to
route around Chinese government censorship is
a trojan that should be blocked? It makes you wonder what
kind of deal these security firms struck with the Chinese government.
