Reality-TV human baby giveaway,

04/29/2004 01:32 PMThe ABC-TV program 20/20 will air a contest between five couples on
the show this Friday -- the winners get to adopt a real-live, pooping,
crying baby. So, let me get this straight. You can't say "fuck," but
you
can broadcast a raffle for a human being?
What's that? You say the program and host Barbara Walters have gone
too far this time? What do you know about television? ABC knows a
winner when it sees it and this is Nielsen gold, my friend. A reality
show with a human life on the line -- all disguised as news
programming. Let the other shows have half-naked people betraying each
other on a deserted island. Give them the half-naked people eating
buckets of bug eyes. And the half-naked people putting up with Donald
Trump. And the half-naked people trying to get other half-naked people
to marry them.

UPDATE: STOP PRESS! The real scandal here? Celebrity
spoon-bending psychic Uri Geller is outraged at news of the 20/20 baby
giveaway episode. He's planning legal action, and claims he owns a
worldwide patent on any reality TV show that involves winning a baby.
"I will speak to my patent attorney," says Geller, "I own the idea."
Whatever, dear BoingBoing readers, but let me set the record straight:
I own the patent on any reality-TV show involving live
mudwrestling smackdowns between Uri Geller and Barbara Walters, and I
will personally bend the spoon of anyone who forgets it. Link to Reuters story.

RFID implant good for PR?
RFID implant good for PR?
04/01/2005 12:24 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Yesterday, I
posted a link to the Body Modification Ezine
intervie
w with Amaal Graafstra, the guy who had an RFID chip surgically
implanted in his hand. This morning, BMEzine received an email from
Matt Trossen, proprietor of Phidgets USA. Here's an excerpt:
I just ran across your RFID article with Amal. I couldn't
believe what
I was reading, especially since I sold him the RFID chip and reader! I
remember him asking about the biobond stuff and now I know why. I had
no idea someone was going to be crazy techie enough to put one in
their own hand. Wild.
Anyhow, I was surprised to see a whole article about someone using an
RFID reader and chip from us with no mention or link.
I have no idea what policies the site has about such things, but I'm a
small business doing everything I can to grow and I think this article
will generate some publicity and would love to let people know where
the RFID reader + chip came from.
Praise to Pidget for seizing the weird PR opportunity!

retina implant that has the potential to restore limited eyesight in
people who have suffered hereditary vision loss. The implant works
with a microcomputer, worn at the waist, and eye glasses. The glasses
have a built-in camera, where the visual information that's captured
is converted into electrical impulses and transmitted to the implant.
So far, 95 percent of the test patients have reported visual
perceptions.
