The World Economic Forum is the foremost global community of
business, political, intellectual and other leaders of society
committed to improving the state of the world. The Forum is an
independent international organization incorporated as a Swiss
not-for-profit foundation and has NGO consultative status with the
Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Their members
represent the world’s 1,000 leading companies, along with 200
smaller businesses, many from the developing world, that play a potent
role in their industry or region. Their members are often innovative
and inspiring individuals who challenge conventional thinking and are
committed to making the world a better place. They also work closely
with
communities of leaders from academia, government, religion, the
media, non-governmental organizations and the arts. Their members –
like their staff – come from all parts of the world, and our Annual
Meetings bring together people from more than 100 countries. This will

Namespaces and Social Networks in a
Tagged World
Namespaces and Social Networks in a
Tagged World
02/05/2005 09:12 PM
David Weinberger has
a brilliant
quick statement about how BOTH namespaces and social networks will
be used to disambiguate tags'.
I sure as hell hope so. I'd hate it if there was nothing to
disambiguate tags.
Namespaces and Social Networks in a Tagged World
As the interest in tagging and folksonomies grows, we are going to be
faced with a choice: Namespaces or social networks.
The problem is that tags are too simple and ambiguous. (That's also
their strength, but we'll let that go for the moment.) As tens of
millions of people start tagging Web resources, many tags will include
too many disparate items: When you're searching for pages about
London, do you really want to get pages about Jack London? And, no one
really wants information about London; we always want information
about some aspect of a topic. So, the "London"-tagged pages about
London's club scene are noise to someone looking for information about
London's form of government.
Namespaces, or domains of discourse if you prefer, are one way
around this. For example, the Global Voices group that encourages
inter-national blogging, suggests tagging relevant pages with the
prefix "gv" as in "gv:ghana" or "gv:thailand." We will undoubtedly see
a proliferation of such prefixes, and if tagging really takes off, we
may end up with an unregulated version of the domain system in which
multiple organizations squabble over who gets to use a particular
prefix.
Social networks provide an alternative. If I knew who the people
associated with Global Voices were, and if I knew who was the author
of particular tags, I could search for the "ghana" tag and find only
the ones created by GV members. That wouldn't be perfect because it
would get pages tagged by GV members for personal use, but it might be
good enough, especially with further refinement.
This is not an either/or. I'm confident we're going to see both
namespaces and social networks used to disambiguate tags. And there
are undoubtedly brilliant ideas waiting to be had. But it seems highly
likely to me that social networks are going to become more important
than ever in a world gone made with tagging.

I love this piece.
It's especially heartening for me to listen to David talk about
social networks - as I know he's against the 'Friendster/Tribe' school
of thought - but seems to have accepted a more generalized notion of
what social networks are - and will be.
Anyway - I never said I liked those explicit social networks - it's
just that it was so much dam fun gaming them (apparently Joi had fun
-too!) But it's up to folks like David - who keep us honest -
especially when it comes to the difference between something explcit
liek calling someone "your friend" - versus truth and honesty.

Social people don't need social

12/14/2003 09:54 PMKevin Werbach points out that social networking sites like LinkedIn
and Tribe and so forth have very little to offer highly connected
people like Esther Dyson, who would nevertheless be a real asset to
the network:
Esther and Pierre don't need LinkedIn to reach pretty much anyone they
want to contact. Yet there are a whole lot of folks who want to reach
them, and don't have a personal connection to do so. So the service
worsens their email overload with little corresponding benefit.
LinkSocial Applications For Social Devices
Social Applications For Social Devices
07/13/2004 01:53 AMThe mobile phone, by its very nature is a "social" device. It's
designed to help connect you to someone else. While most of the early
efforts to create "mobile data" have come from a broadcast mindset
(delivery produced content to an audience), it looks like some are
finally realizing that mobile data apps need to be social to really
catch on. If they're not making use of the mobile phone for what it's
good for, then it's unlikely to get too much attention. MIT's Tech
Review has a good overview of a
variety of different "social" projects related to mobile
devices, from the ever popular "Dodgeball" mobile social
networking application to Fluidtime's dorm room washing machine SMS
scheduler (and negotiator, should you find out you need the machine
now and someone else has it booked). These are the types of
applications that really are the future of mobile phones -- and not
the ability to watch the latest reality TV series on your phone or to
receive a marketing message from Disney.

Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter Scoble kicks RSS ass?
Scoble kicks RSS ass?
09/12/2004 05:17 AM
Yesterday I wrote
about how Seattle is kicking my ass, now it's time to debunk
Scoble's gross condemnation of RSS.
On Wednesay he posted
a> that MSDN was limiting its RSS feed, dropping full text, because
they were serving terabytes through RSS, and weren't happy with the
economics.
Either Scoble didn't explain or I wasn't paying attention,
because they were doing something very strange<
/a>: aggregating all their blogs into one feed. They have thousands of
blogs. In any hour the chances that one or more blogs changed is near
100 percent. And the feed is huge, every time you load it, you're
downloading a lot of blog posts you don't care about.
The solution is simple, and it follows the grain of the Web,
follows the intent of micro-publishing, and it's the way every other
blogging community works -- simply offer a feed for every blog. That
takes care of everything. It's just wrong to turn a community of
weblogs into one giant Usenet group or Yahoo mail list.
So why does Scoble blame RSS? He's got the journalist's impulse
for sensationalism and he can't say Microsoft is broken or they'd fire
him. ";->"
