The Blogosphere and the Holidays
The Blogosphere and the Holidays
12/20/2003 06:16 AM
First, if this time of year makes you cheerful, have a happy.
I'm pretty ambivalent. There are some things I like and some things I
don't. I see the pressure to buy for what it is. Pressure, which I
don't like, and commercialism, which I also don't like. I love buying
nice things, but almost no one knows how to do that for me like I do.
I suspect that's true of everyone.
One of the things I like about this time of year is that so
many people seem to have a time to do interesting and fun things. It's
like everyone gets a mini-sabbatical. It's time to go to a game, to
the movies, a museum, out to a long lunch or visit with a few bloggers
you haven't stayed in touch with. Next week I'm going to be in NYC.
Maybe there will be an opportunity to do some or all of that.
Randy Charles Morin sent a question about this. Does the
blogosphere pick up or go on holiday during the holidays? Here's what
I said.
1. I don't have any data, but I do have subjectives.
2. The actual flow goes down, around the 25th way down.
3. But the volume of real work goes up, because people have
time for projects that require attention or thinking, which they have
more of in the coming two-three weeks.
I've done some of my best work in this period in years past. My
first two XML projects, siteChanges.xml and scriptingNews format
(which became half of RSS 0.91) were hatched in December. Last year in
this time period I helped my parents get through a tough time. I was
telling my brother yesterday that I have fond memories of this, it
gave me a strong sense of purpose, and a sense that I made a
difference. That also happened during the holidays last year.
So mostly the holidays are good. I especially like it when
stress isn't a big part of it.

Woes of Big Holidays
Woes of Big Holidays
12/27/2004 08:25 AM
Egad. One down, one more to go. I hate big holidays
because the big ones
are actually three in one: Blah Eve, Blah itself, and After-Blah
Sales Day.
On Blah Eve, my wife expects me to pay attention to her. That
means lots of
kisses and lip service. I wonder if the word Eve being the
name of the first
gal had something to do with this.
On the Blah Day, my wife expects me to pay attention to the
family. In modern
terms, this means doing far more TV watching than my usual 30
minutes a day.
The worst part is that TV programming really sucks on such
days. Radio is even
worse.
On the After-Blah Sales Day, my wife expects me to be
invisible. Actually she
is the one that does the disappearing act from dawn til dusk.
If I happen to
get up too early, I get the deathray look. This morning, I
got up just as she
was putting on her shoes to go out shopping. Oops.

Winter holidays in Russia.
12/22/2003 10:06 PMIn Russia, winter holidays are celebrated somewhat differently than in
the United States and most of the West. Although the underlying
substance of the winter holidays -- presents, trees, family
gatherings -- is the same, it corresponds to different holidays and
customs. This results from a blend of Russian national tradition,
the influence of Eastern Orthodox heritage and of course, Soviet
secularisation. There is a lot more to be said about this than is
actually practical, so I would like to focus on two axial aspects
that sit comfortably within my sphere of knowledge: New Year and the
custom of giving presents. The latter topic is a little more
editorial than encyclopedic, but please bear with me. Also, please
understand that none of this information is in any way
"authoritative." I tell you all this as a Russian immigrant, not as a
cultural anthropologist or otherwise a person bearing any
credentials or officialdom.

12/09/2003 06:14 AMWhile shoppers are expected to spend big bucks online this holiday
season, Web retailers may not have much to celebrate as steep
discounts and free shipping cut into their profit margins.
