A Gateway to disaster?
A Gateway to disaster?
09/26/2004 12:51 PMThere was a time, once, when I didn’t need a computer. Somehow, a pen,
some paper and a word processor were enough to get my words across
— and if you had asked me what a gigabyte was, I would have
simply walked away, confused.
My, how times have changed. When I was entering college, computers
were just beginning to hit the mainstream, and I can remember using
my friend’s Performa to get those last-minute term papers written. To
be honest, I wasn’t particularly impressed … which is not to say I was
unimpressed either; I was merely a clueless word-processing neophyte
who saw a computer as a logical transition from an electronic
typewriter.
To be honest, the first time I really noticed a computer was when a
friend of mine brought home his brand new Gateway desktop. Between the
cow-spotted box and the bright screen (at least as compared to my
friend’s Performa), it was my experience with Gateway that convinced
me to buy my first computer.
Then, three years later, I bought a Mac, and I never looked back.
Gateway, however, has, and it's not a <A
HREF="http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow/0,2394,l=135602&s=400&a=1356
03,00.asp">pretty sight</A>.
So, what happened. In 1997, Gateway was at the top of the charts, but
by 1998, they had crashed — in more ways than one: Its stock
plummeted, its designs faltered, its creativity suffered, and its
outlook turned oh so bleak.
Now, if the stock drops a dime, that's 2 percent of the company's
worth.
It's unfortunate how these things happen to tech stocks. More than any
other sector, the tech market’s volatility have kept investors at bay
for years, wary of even the slightest fluctuation in earnings or
sales. On a good day, it's enough to drive a CEO to drink; add a
high-priced Google and a bloated Apple to the mix, and there might be
a few job openings in upper management.
Seriously, though, these types of booms and busts are most certainly
cyclical, and every few years a stock comes along that performs better
than the rest, with numbers breaking recent company highs and products
that have got everyone talking.
Kinda like Apple. Kinda like now.
In February 2001, after cutting some 3,000 jobs, icing plans for 60
retail stores and drastically cutting its number of possible PC
configuration, Gateway announced that it was "shifting back to
primarily selling computers, after pursuing a strategy aimed at
selling services and peripherals, so-called 'beyond-the-box' revenue.
Executives said Gateway will focus on selling computers first, instead
of pushing a combination of products from the outset."
Which is to say that Gateway shifted away from a profitable
sub-business to refocus its efforts back on its bread and butter. So
too, with Apple and iPod.
I've written several columns examining Apple and iPod: Some have
explored Apple's shift from manufacturing computers; some have
suggested making iPod its own brand, but throughout it all, the iPod
has carried Apple through supply slumps and sales speed bumps. The
truth is, without iPod, Apple’s stock wouldn’t be anywhere near $40.
Tech stocks have proven that investors cannot live on computers alone.
Of course, if anyone can do it, Apple can. While Gateway still hasn’t
found the formula that made it so popular in the mid 90s, Apple
continues to push ahead, straddling two markets with dexterity, and
(thus far, anyway) succeeding at both.
But it remains to be seen whether the iMac will sell. And after nearly
16 months, the Power Mac doesn't have much more juice than it did upon
its introduction. Whatever happens with the fourth quarter (which ends
Thursday), it seems as though Apple doesn’t have too much to worry
about at the moment.
But eventually, a decision will need to be made — Gateway chose
poorly and has never recovered. Somehow, I think Apple will get this
one right.

200mW Wi-Fi Gateway
08/13/2004 05:47 PMMacWireless.com isn't just for Macs: new 200mW base station could be a
neat tool for better coverage: More power doesn't always equate to
more coverage area or range, but it's not a bad way to start. I'll be
curious to put a high-powered Wi-Fi gateway like MacWireless.com's new
$200 unit against Belkin's upcoming MIMO-based device that will cost
about $180. MacWireless.com is limited to 11 Mbps (802.11b speed) for
200mW performance, while Belkin's unit will operate at a raw
throughput rate of 108 Mbps for its proprietary mode and 54 Mbps for
its compatible 802.11g mode. MacWireless.com's device doesn't support
PPPoE for DSL/cable login, and it's got just a single Ethernet port,
which makes it difficult to use on mixed wired/wireless networks that
don't use a static subnetted range of IP addresses....

Product Review: Gateway E-4100 VS
(NewsFactor)
08/13/2004 04:19 PMNewsFactor - When purchasing a Gateway E series PC, you're given the
option of selecting which of several packages you'd prefer: "value,"
"performance," "productivity" and so forth. Opting for the Value
Series, I expected a relatively powerful machine with a reasonable
price tag. Unfortunately, Gateway seems to have a different view of
"value," as the Gateway E-4100 Value Series turns out to be not much
of a bargain.
Gateway 7000 Series Ideal Security
Solution for Small Office
Gateway 7000 Series Ideal Security
Solution for Small Office
07/15/2004 01:42 PMGateway's 7000 service access points include all the security and
authentication that an office of 5 to 25 users need: Gateway released
its two 7000 series models a few months ago and have received very
little press. The unit comes in 802.11g ($299) and 802.11a/g ($399)
configurations. It sports support for all the popular standards,
including 802.1X passthrough, WPA-PSK, WDS (Wireless Distribution
System), and others. It even includes two separate
wide-area-networking (WAN) interfaces: if you have a separately
segmented guest wired network, you can physically connect the device
through the guest interface to your public WAN and the private
interface to your private WAN. The device can segregate all wireless
traffic. It can also do this using Virtual LAN (VLAN) tagging by
providing multiple SSIDs that are logically separate for guest and
authorized user: the traffic is routed by your VLAN switch or system.
But the real winning feature in this unit is its built-in RADIUS
server that supports both WEP and WPA over 802.1X using PEAP
(Protected EAP). Because Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.3 both include
PEAP, and it's possible to use PEAP affordably on other platforms
including Linux and Solaris, PEAP is currently the broadest standard
to support. Effectively, using a $299 or $399 device, you can have
enterprise-level security without a separate RADIUS server or the
administrative overhead. But it only supports a handful of users. I
was interested immediately in this built-in server aspect, and
received a review unit some time ago, but was unable to get past some
initial confusion in configuration. I started from scratch today,
using the factory defaults reset button, and had no problems
whatsoever with the same instructions, software, and firmware, so
let's attribute my earlier issues to user error. The device is
extremely easy to configure. I followed the directions and powered up
the unit, plugging my wired LAN into the LAN1 port. I ran the
auto-configuration software that finds the access point. It assumes
that you have a DHCP server running and this software handles the
discovery of the 7000 series IP address. You click a link in the
software to open a browser and enter the default passwords to connect.
Once connected, there's very little to configure for an ordinary
network. I went to the User Management section and created an account
for myself. I then clicked on the Security tab under the Advanced
section and...

It's probably not going to
give you the same sort of visual fidelity of a nicer camera, but for
$230 the new AIPTEK PocketDV 4100 looks like a fun diversion, with a
4-megapixel sensor and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Keep in mind that
the 4100 doesn't use tapes. Instead, it has a Compact Flash slot that
supports, well, as much Compact Flash as you can afford. I suspect
that the 4-megapixel sensor is actually 4-megapixel this time, instead
of the 2-megapixel CCD that's in the SD-card-based PocketDV 4500 that
is just interpolated up to 4-megapixel. (Thanks, Mike!)

Nikon's got a new Coolpix coming out this summer with
a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1.6-inch LCD and--in a rare
return to early digicam form--14.5MB of internal memory. The Coolpix
4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be
price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to
release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100
will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are
just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the
manufacturer.

03/29/2005 11:03 PMAn Inside Look At SCO
An Inside Look At SCO
07/28/2004 09:51 AMWired has a fascinating
article on how SCO went from being a small-time Linux vendor to a
big-time pain in the can under the steerage of CEO Darl McBride.
McBride has also received death threats, a challenge to a
fistfight, and a flood of denial-of-service attacks targeting his
company's email servers and his home phone. He's started carrying a
gun for protection. Friends tease him that in two short years, he has
displaced Bill Gates as the most hated man in high tech.
It took Gates decades of hard work to achieve that distinction.
What has the son of a farmer, a devout Mormon, and the father of seven
done to so swiftly earn the honor? McBride has transformed SCO into a
legal missile aimed at the heart of the open source software movement.
His strategy threatens to undo the progress of Linux and other free
operating systems developed by programmers who believe that
collaborative efforts have produced the most robust and reliable
code.
Long, but worth the read. The article makes it sound like McBride
has a long history of questionable business deals and attempting to
sue his way out of trouble.
Another point the article makes is that Linux could have avoided
this whole issue if Torvalds had required contributors to sign
copyright affidavits, as GNU did. But, the laissez-faire approach to
the development of Linux is one of the things that really made it take
off. Could it have grown as quickly if it had kept a paper trail?
