Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player
Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player
08/23/2004 10:51 AM
Now this is the way to challenge the iPod:
go smaller. While most players appeal to the nerd core by packing in
tons of obscure (if welcome) features, the Auvi SA1500 tries a
different tack, cramming a 20GB hard drive into a unit just a hair
bigger than the iPod mini. Add in a 20 hour playback time and
it's easy to call this one a contender even without having seen one in
person. The price is too high; UK retailer Firebox is expected to have
them on sale soon for around $450, although for whatever reason the UK
always seems to get nailed with higher prices, so a US model would
probably be cheaper. If they can get it out there, though, and not
screw up the user interface, the SA1500 will definitely turn a few
heads.

Design Contest: Win a JetAudio iAudio M3
20GB Hard Disk Player
07/27/2004 04:09 PM
Some of the
graphic design geeks over at Kirupa Forum decided to have a 'Logo
Design Battle,' a sort of visual arts freestyle competition, and they
chose Gizmodo to riff off of. And as much as we love our current
design (not that we aren't always tweaking), we thought it was pretty
cool they liked Gizmodo enough to use us as a springboard, so we
thought maybe we'd up the ante a bit and offer a new JetAudio iAudio
M3 20GB hard disk MP3 player to the winner of the contest (after we
review the damn thing, that is). So if you're a designer and you want
to head over to their forums and join the battle, we'd love to see
what neat graphics you come up with.

Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the
world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player.
07/01/2004 08:41 PMEngadget:
Sony’s Network
Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player. "The
Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty
hours of battery life on a single charge." Dell has been advertising
"twice the battery life of iPod" on the radio lately, but the fast
talk at the end of the commercial says they assume 64kbps files. Most
people probably have 128kbps files on their iPods, so the Dell DJ
probably accesses the hard disk half as often -- voila, twice the
battery life. And if you use 48kbps audio, like Sony does, then you
get three times the iPod's battery life -- around 30 hours. When
everybody's using the same parts, the only way to get a 2x or 3x
advantage is to cheat.

New: SmartDisk FireFly 20GB drive

hard drive, based on a 1.8-inch/4200 RPM drive mechanism.
SmartDisk FireFly: 20GB USB Hard Drive
SmartDisk FireFly: 20GB USB Hard Drive
07/08/2004 08:44 AM
I'd declare the
death of Flash Memory drives if I could, as manufacturers like
SmartDisk continue to release tiny, portable hard drives like the
FireFly, but as the capacities in both product lines grow, they both
will move to fill the niche their forebears pioneered. But as robust
and sturdy as flash memory drives can be, a product like the FireFly
-- a portable 20GB hard drive that requires no external power to
operate -- is a much smarter solution for someone who needs to carry
around a fair amount of data and doesn't mind the relatively bigger
size. It's still tiny, though, in the grand scheme of things -- only
four inches long with a weight of 3.3-ounces -- and with a retail
price of just $189, it's cheaper and easier than buying, say, an iPod
to do double-duty.

08/13/2004 12:18 PMSoyo Group Inc. has taken the wraps off its latest portable hard
drive, the
Cigar
HD20, a 1.8-inch hard drive with a USB 2.0 interface and 20GB of
storage capacity. With its magnesium alloy casing, the US$199 Cigar
HD20 is approximately the size of an iPod and weighs 2.8 ounces. The
hard drive spins at 4200RPM and it draws power from a USB port. Soyo's
Web page for the product lists the inclusion of
compression/decompression software as well as e-mail sending and
receiving capabilities and security features, but a company
representative told MacCentral that none of those items currently ship
with the drive, although they could be added at a later date. He was
unsure if they will be compatible with Mac OS X. The Cigar HD20 comes
with a USB 2.0 cable and a soft carrying case.
