Bowling (Green) for Wi-Fi

Bowling (Green) for Wi-Fi

Bowling (Green) for Wi-Fi 01/17/2004 11:07 PM

Man returns from California with stories of fire, wheel: It's very funny to read this local report about a fellow from the area who was in California for 10 years working in high tech and returned to his hometown. Remember that this is local coverage, and the reporter makes the guy sound like someone who has been to the mountain and returns with these 15...I mean, 10 commandments. The idea is great, and it's in the pre-preliminary stages to put in a very inexpensive cloud of Wi-Fi across downtown Bowling Green. The proposal hasn't been publicly circulated and sounds full of questions about how to make it go; the technical issues are not a problem, however. [via a link at GigaOm]...

Bowling to Vegas

Bowling to Vegas 03/14/2003 01:09 PM
Bowling to Vegas! Four drunk bowling fanatics from Chicago are bowling their way across country....apparently for lack of anything better to do(looks like a couple of them are unemployed). Also, they're trying to restore dignity to the good old-fashioned Road Trip(and, of course, bowling). Why bowl to Vegas instead of fly? As Mike says: "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. Nobody has respect for the road trip anymore. Haven't you people seen Fandango?" Follow their progress across country, and buy 'em a round.

Green Day CD-Rs 09/24/2004 09:55 AM

greendayitmscdr.jpg imageStrange but punk. Green Day and iTunes Music Store are releasing a special set of CD-Rs pre-imprinted with the logos from the original CDs, so that you can download their music from iTMS and burn it onto a proper disc - sound quality aside, no one would be the wiser.

Wouldn't it be nice if a band were to release their redbook CDs along with a blank CD-R for copying and giving to your friends? Just sort of a, "We don't mind if you want to make a copy or two. Thanks for purchasing." I'm not holding my breath (my blood atenuators do not require crude meatchanical motion).

Beyond the Green Zone

Beyond the Green Zone 05/19/2004 12:11 AM
Jeff Jarvis echoes Howard Kurtz's observation that most U.S. reporters in Iraq aren't daring to venture outside the Green Zone. Given the chaos there and the danger of being taken hostage or worse, it's hard to second-guess the decisions these journalists are making. But there's no question we won't get the full picture from Iraq this way.

Jarvis suggests we read Iraqi bloggers (and provides a set of links to them). That's certainly good advice.

But it's also worth pointing out that Salon's coverage from Iraq was not "embedded" during the invasion and is not embedded in the Green Zone today. Our correspondent Philli p Robertson has been courageously, and independently, traveling the country, offering e yewitness accounts from the siege of Najaf and Kufa, escaping a thankfully brief detainment by Moqtada al-Sadr's Al-Mehdi Army, and providing another angle on the Abu Ghraib abuses.

Phillip is a fine writer and a great observer. If you want to read reporting that's not hunkered down behind the barricades, here it is.

First learn computer science and all the theory. Next develop a programming style. Then forget all that and just hack. -- George Carrette

Reminds me of the time the Malaysian government sent a software team to Canada to do technology transfer for a flight simulator system. After spending 2 years in Canada, they returned, and i asked one of the team members how the Canadian coders designed this powerful and complex system. I was expecting some detailed software methodology involving multiple phases. He told me, "they just hire a bunch of talented programmers, teach them the physics, and tell them to hack!"

First learn computer science and all the theory. Next develop a programming style. Then forget all that and just hack. -- George Carrette

I posted this comment a few weeks ago, but i never clarified what i thought of this quotation - until now...

Let's say you learnt a subject really well, and were asked to teach others. You enjoy teaching and others admire your teaching style. Then one day, you throw away all your notes and teach off-the-cuff, from memory. You have to really know your stuff before you'd dare do that.

We'll that's what I think George Carrette meant by "Just Hack". If you don't know your stuff inside-out, upside-down and every-which-way, "Just Hack" is probably not for you.

Salon has an article about Hackers on Atkins, and in a shameless display of self-aggrandizement, yours truly is featured in the company of uber-bloggers Cory Doctorow and Doc Searls. As my brother smirked to me in an email response after reading the article, "four overweight guys lose weight! stop the presses!", my response was to quote from Cory in the article:
"Maybe it will make us all grow third arms and go blind in 20 years," quips Doctorow. "It's sort of hard to tell. It represents a kind of hacker's approach, grounded as it is in jack-legged engineering rather than science."
The only other thing that I want to make clear about Atkins is that it clearly isn't for everybody. It is a radical change in eating habits, not well-suited for everyone, especially vegetarians. I can only speak from my own personal experience that it works for me.

Note: This article is curently available only to Salon Premium subscribers, so you'll have to view a short Ad to see the article if you're not currently a subscriber...

For instance, most of our default templates display archive links in a list. But really, the archive tags simply provide the names and URLs of all the archive files, and we can do whatever we want with them. Do you know how to make a pull-down menu in HTML? Think that might be a more efficient format for your three years of daily archives? Great! Move the archive tags out of the list and into a menu.

Where librarians go to hack 05/03/2004 07:24 PM
Proving you can never be too pedantic (in a good way, mind you), I bring you hacker librarians:
There is a subculture of librarians that could make a significant impact on the profession. They are women and men, youthful and experienced alike, who all share one thing: a passion for solving problems by creating software. They are hacker librarians.

Hacker librarians are not afraid to configure and install software. They do not shrink from writing a program in whatever flavor of 'P' language they favor, from Perl to Python, with the hardiest even tackling Java and C++. Beyond enjoying the hunt for the right solution, they like to create solutions with colleagues and appreciate those who can provide knowledge about user needs and experiences.

Sometimes when the phone rings I whistle a popular tune from a CD I bought, do I need to pay for that? America is a great place, we have fair use- it’s why we’re great innovators and heck- making stuff for our phones for our own personal use goes beyond fair use.
