The Horse Race Syndrome

The Horse Race Syndrome 01/17/2004 10:47 PM

Some day, we could just cover the issues. Nah, that would take away our role as arbiters, and we couldn't allow that to happen, right?

The origins of the term "inside baseball" are in one writer's view of sports reporting during the 1980s. He's Bill James, now a famous scholar of baseball. The arguments he made then explain why the term migrated so easily to politics. The inside, said James, is a hall of mirrors.

The Unix Horse Race

The Unix Horse Race 06/17/2005 04:38 PM

The big OpenSolaris launch is today; there’s a huge crowd of bloggers giving you the deep technical poop, so I’ll stick to sports metaphors. I don’t know what the word “Unix” means legally, but if it’s got a real fork(), it’s Unix to me; that includes GNU/Linux and the BSDs and Solaris. Which is to say, they’re more alike than they are different, and they’re all pretty good. Nobody cares much about the history now; it’s about fast, reliable, and cheap, and that’s as it should be. If you look at the core engineering teams for Linux and Solaris, neither of them is dramatically bigger than the other, so I think the race is pretty fair. My personal take? At the moment Solaris is ahead in scaling and observability and production management. The good Linux distros are ahead in installing and packaging (“In the Beginning there was nothing. So God said apt-get install light”) and user interface. Is there a downside? The BSDs might get crowded out in all the excitement, and that would be sad. Aside from that, it’s gonna be fun to watch. And the people who are lined up to bet are waving real money, lots of it.

Picking a horse for this big race

Picking a horse for this big race 01/27/2004 04:45 AM

I've spent the past couple months reviewing all the presidental candidates, looking for the one with the right combination of passion, hope, and a plan for our future. I've taken a long look at Dean, Clark, and Edwards, but they don't quite hit the mark for me personally.

After months of research, reading their issue statements online, and watching a good deal of CSPAN, I've finally come up with my pick for the next president of the United States in 2004:

Ronnie James Dio

There are dozens of good reasons, but to sum up: Dio's tough on the issues, isn't afraid to speak his mind, still knows how to rock after all these years, can shake the "angry guy" image pretty easily, and overall I think the next four years will kick so much ass with Dio in charge that he's my pick in '04.

I urge New Hampshire voters that might still be on the fence to think about Dio, if not for me, not for yourself, but for America. Go Dio Go!!!

Sulfnbk Syndrome, Media Consumption, and
the Dry Run that Wasn't
07/24/2004 09:20 AM
Remember when emails were flying around about the sulfnbk.exe virus? It began on the internet, spread like wildfire, and eventually made it all the way to the cable news channels. It turned out, of course, sulfnbk.exe wasn't a virus. It's a program that backs up long filenames created by Windows, but few people bothered to look it up before deleting it. As a result, the more unfortunate victims were puzzled to find some DOS programs had rendered many of their file names illegi~1. Less a computer proficiency deficiency than an aversion to independent thought, the sulfnbk syndrome seems to repeat itself with unfailing consistency. The story you're about to read is just the latest permutation.

"Judith Scott (born 1943), a fifty-five year old woman with Down's Syndrome, has spent the past ten years producing a series of totally non-functional objects which, to us, appear to be works of sculpture, except that the notion of sculpture is far beyond Judith's understanding. As well as being mentally handicapped, Judith cannot hear or speak, and she has little concept of language."

A friend of Boing Boing says, "I've just learned that she died last night."

We understand that a television segment about Ms. Scott's life and creative legacy may air soon on a network TV show. If so, we'll blog it here.

Early bird syndrome linked to genetic
mutation

Early bird syndrome linked to genetic
mutation
03/31/2005 11:46 PM
David Pescovitz: In this week's issue of Nature, neuroscientists report that they've implicated a single gene mutation in Familiar Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (FASPS), or "early bird syndrome." Often, people who have this condition have no choice but to crash in the early evening and wake up long before dawn. From National Geographic News:
"The net result is you can feel very isolated," (FASPS sufferer Susan) Middlebrook said. "Who wants to party at three in the morning? Nobody I know, and I'm not headed to the local bar to see who's still there." Instead, she quietly cleans the house, makes breakfast, or cuddles up with a book.

About three-tenths of a percent of the world's population lives like this, including two of Middlebrook's sisters, her daughter, and her mother. "Their whole clock is shifted," said Ying-Hui Fu, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco...

The researchers are not yet certain how the gene mutation works to shift people's sleep time. But laboratory experiments suggest mutation slows the activity of a protein called casein kinase I delta (CKIdelta). "The next step is to figure out why," Fu said.

More horse talk

More horse talk 06/01/2004 05:06 PM
Well, well. It seems that we are joining the bunch of girly horse blogs :). Second lesson today. Went "Around the world" - essentially turning 360 degrees in the saddle, did trot without stirrups (scary at first), and nearly fell off a couple of times, while trying to grab by left foot with my right hand. Heh. Fun exercises, even though I think I sprained something.

It feels good to be learning something new again (plenty of new words at least :). And the horses are actually quite cute - though I'm pretty sure I'd be scared shitless if they were angry at me. 500 kilos of angry meat is dangerous - herbivore or no herbivore. But perhaps I'll learn to "talk horse" some day.
