Wake Up Space Cadets

Wake Up Space Cadets

Wake Up Space Cadets 01/17/2004 10:44 PM

Bush's talk on moonbase and manned mission to Mars is just what a dopehead might say dreamily while blowing smokes.  The total bill is likely to reach 1 trillion dollars.  Where is the money?  There is no money and, even if there was, NASA is not going to see much of it.  Instead, NASA will be asked to sacrifice its other programs to chase this pair of smoke rings.  Meanwhile, our children will be forced to cast aside the growing burden of social security, leaving us old and poor.  Bush opened this can of hoopla because he is afraid of ending up like his father in the upcoming election.  Wake up I say.

“SpaceShipOne has rocketed into the history books to become the first private manned spacecraft to fly to the edge of space and back. The craft, built by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, went over space’s 100km (62 mile) boundary, said mission control. It was carried to 50,000ft (15km) by its launcher White Knight at which point it was unleashed. It fired its rockets to continue its trip.” The BBC’s servers are being hit hard at the moment - if you can’t get the story, try again later.

Wake Me Up When It's Over

Wake Me Up When It's Over 06/17/2004 12:33 AM
Supernova is, as expected, coming together nicely.  Of course, nice is a relative word.  There are always multiple fire drills in the weeks prior to an event, which I've been completely focused on recently.  The good news is that registrations are going great, and we've got some fantastic sessions in store for the event.

If you're in the Bay Area, please consider joining us next week (June 24-25) for what promises to be an extroardinary gathering of innovators, thinkers, implementers, investors, and other thought leaders of the technology world.

Check out our Community Connection for the conference weblog, wiki, and other interactive tools.  Supernova always generates a virtual event in parallel with the physical conference; this year, we've kicked the cyber-component up a notch.

And don't forget to sign up for Joi's Pre-Conference Dinner on Wednesday June 23.  It's open to anyone who RSVPs,whether you're attending Supernova or not.

the IE problem?

Comment : When will Microsoft wake up to
the IE problem?
09/16/2004 01:02 PM
Morale cannot be good in the Internet Explorer team at the moment. This week, Microsoft announced they had another major problem with the browser. IE’s handling of JPEGs has serious issues that could give users a serious headache. Equally, many websites have followed a story on how Firefox market share could be as high as 20%. Executives at the top must be feeling the heat. SP2, users were told, would fix all the security issues, the vulnerabilities, everything, with IE. One would hope that people didn't believe Microsoft, too much. Some of the blogs have gone rather eerily silent.

Microsoft has a serious problem on their hands. Winning the lawsuit and the browser war in the 90s, the company (mistakenly) thought they could sit happy with Internet Explorer. Like their desktop OS market, there were few realistic competitors and in the past 5 years, none have made significant gains on Microsoft's user base. The only area where dramatic user loss from Microsoft is visible in the browser market. Even Microsoft’s own staff blog for Firefox! What signals can that be sending to Internet Explorer users?

Internet Explorer suffers from a variety of problems, the most key of them being that it's being made by Microsoft. The product needs a re-work, needs new features, needs security. SP2, yes, introduced some of this, and a touch more protection for users, but it hasn't closed the door on IE's problems - far from it.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”.
