08/17/2004 02:00 AM
Aliencamel.com announces that the email-storage-space race is over. This race was started by Google's Gmail service offering 1GB of storage. AlienCamel has gone the final step and is now offering its users unlimited storage. By removing limits on space, users now have a simple, low-cost service which will keep their emails safe, secure and backed up forever. AlienCamel has implemented the most sophisticated anti-spam filtering and email-virus-blocking technology over the last 18 months. Now, AlienCamel is the first independent commercial email service in the world to offer "unlimited storage for personal email". [PRWEB Aug 17, 2004]

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
The big discussion that I've been having with a few different people over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that Google is developing an email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic - which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out - and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the ability to better search through their own email. I could see a certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well, it could be a real hit.

Email to RSS service 03/06/2004 01:57 AM
Tom Dyson has created Mailbucket, a nice (and currently free) web service that takes emails and turns them into RSS feeds. It's very useful for mailing lists that you would rather read as RSS feeds. I've already set up two RSS feeds, Strangelove.xml for the mailing list I am a sponsor of (more info at the Strangelove web site), and Berkeley.xml for press releases from UC Berkeley. Feel free to subscribe to either. IUpload has a similar service, Mail by RSS, that I haven't tried. Found via Kellan of LaughingMeme....

Verisign announced on Monday their new e-mail security service to stop spam and viruses. The service uses heuristic tools, custom blacklists, and fingerprinting to calculate the probability that a particular e-mail message is spam after looking at a pattern of characteristics. The heuristic tools use over 10,000 rules to see if a message is spam. The service also uses three antivirus engines to block malicious mail. VeriSign has started free trials of the service, which will be available on July 12. Pricing details were not announced today.

New Service Offers Corporate Email
Features to Small Businesses
06/03/2004 02:01 AM
Picomail allows businesses to handle email in a businesslike manner. Small businesses no longer have to rely on whatever email services they can get from their Internet access provider, but can use an email service with the ease of use of Hotmail or AOL's email, with built-in features previously available only with in-house corporate email servers and support staff. Each business gets its own domain name, and can set up as many accounts as needed. Businesses can optionally elect to have an "email receptionist" who can review and redirect incoming email addressed to functional names such as Sales, Service, Personnel, and so forth, as well as email addressed to employees who are away from the office and likely SPAM. Will Advertisers Sue Google To See Your
Email?

Will Advertisers Sue Google To See Your
Email?
06/14/2004 02:50 PM
The misplaced hype over Gmail's potential legal problems for putting up contextual ads in your email seems to have thankfully died down. However, Mark Rasch, over at Security Focus is trying to dig it back up again with a somewhat more thoughtful piece about whether or not Gmail breaks existing laws by scanning emails without the permission of the sender as well. It seems like a stretch - and about the best that can be said is that some of the wording of older laws may need to be adjusted to take into account the concept of email. Otherwise, it doesn't seem like there's a real problem here. However, as an aside, he does bring up an interesting (if unlikely) possibility. What if an advertiser feels that Google is lying about inserting their ads, or believes that Google is inserting competitor's ads instead? Could they then subpoena your emails in order to prove the point? This would, obviously, violate your privacy through no action of your own doing. However, this seems like a huge stretch. First, I'm sure that Google's contract makes it clear that they're not required to put in an ad in all circumstances, so there would be little legal recourse for a company. Second, since the ads are placed on the fly, there's no specific reason why anyone's email should be subpoenaed. The ads are not associated with the email itself - but that particular viewing of the email. So, gaining access to the emails won't show the same ads that were originally placed and will do nothing to prove the legal case one way or the other.
