Infocus 4805 projector

Infocus 4805 projector 08/01/2004 03:30 AM
Some weeks ago we got an Infocus 4805 projector. I picked that one because it got good reviews and at $1500 was one of the cheapest 16:9 DLP projectors I could find. Crutchfield have a 30 day return policy with no restocking fee or any such sillyness, so I thought I'd be worth to try out rather than ordering a more expensive one. If you go higher you are mostly paying for higher resolution, which you can't use anyway if...

InFocus DepthQ: Cheap 3D Projection

InFocus DepthQ: Cheap 3D Projection 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

depthq.jpgInFocus and Lightspeed Design Group are acnnouncing the InFocus DepthQ, an affordable 3D DLP projector that looks to me like a tweaked X2. It's not a solution for everyone—the 3D format are limited to "VESA VGA, page flip, stereo 3D format," and it requires the wearing of LCD shutter glasses—but it looks like many NVIDIA cards will support it, as well as some games (I'm not sure how much of the load is lifted by the video card driver and how much, if any, is done by the game). Still, it's cheap, at around $3,500, and uses solid Infocus technology. The only thing I can't determine is if it comes with a pair of shutter glasses or not (it looks like it doesn't).

InFocus X3 Projector Reviewed (Verdict:
Higher Resolution, Same Problems)
06/22/2005 01:57 AM

infocus_x3.jpgRobert Silva at About.com has reviewed the new InFocus X3 DLP front projector, the third update to the popular low-end line (there was an X1A before the X2). Silva likes it well enough—besides the update to 1,024 by 768 from 800 by 600 resolution, the X3 sounds a lot like the older models—complaining mainly about the DLP rainbows that are just going to happen in lower-end DLP units. For me, it's a promising sign that an affordable true 720p (1,280 by 720 pixel) DLP projector should be coming soon, which will probably be my stopgap purchase while waiting for 1080p DLP projectors to cost less than a car.

New Beastie Boys

New Beastie Boys 06/14/2004 04:08 PM

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, a couple weeks ago I got a copy of To The 5 Boroughs, the new Beastie Boys album. It's not much of a growth for them, sounding a lot like their previous record Hello Nasty. Most of the songs are somewhat forgettable, but MCA gets props for the following rhyme in It Takes Time to Build:

We got a president we didn't elect,
The Kyoto Treaty he decided to neglect...

I never thought environmental treaties would make it into mainstream hip-hop songs, but the Beasties proved me wrong.

Caveat Lector: Beastie Boys Evil

"It seems that Capitol Records has some sort of new copy protection system, that automatically, silently, installs 'helpful' copy protection software on MacOS and Windows as soon as you insert the CD into default systems. I’m not sure exactly what it does yet, but I am sure regreting actually purchasing said media now… they don’t deserve my money if they choose to pull stupid stunts like this. Installing software without your permission sounds like viral malware behaviour to me. I certainly hope the AV companies put signatures into their products for this crap." [Security Focus, via Furdlog]

Noted for when patrons complain that the CD they checked out from your library messed up their computer. Yeah, this is definitely the way for the music industry to win back already angry customers.

Integrated Planning Guidance, Fiscal Years 2005-2011 --a Dept. of Homeland Security document outlining groups to watch out for in the coming years completely omits rightwing and militia groups and individuals as a threat. Clearly listed in the document? ELF and ALF--leftwing groups that destroy property, but have never murdered, unlike Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph and the many others who have arsenals and plenty of hatred, and have already proven themselves killers.

What? You thought I was selling my older hardware for the fun of it? Things I love about Kwyjibo, my new Sony Clie UX50: size, shape, weight, screen, features, functionality, convenience, power cradle. Things I don't love about Kwyjibo: (1) it relies on the Sony Memory Suck; (2) No keyboard navigation; (3) unmanageable USB port cover; (4) no way to flip between portrait / landscape mode; (5) deep reliance on ass-nasty QuickTime codecs; and (6) poor out-of-the-box Outlook integration. Even with these grievances aired, I must admit that I've been quite pleased with "it" so far. Then again, who's ever completely happy with their PDA?...

Rex ROBART III and the Slave Bot Boys 03/14/2005 06:02 PM

lrobartIII.jpgLooking like a three-way love fest between a Imperial Lambda-class Shuttle, a harem of iPods, and an A-10 'Warthog,' the ROBART III is a new robot prototype from the Space and Naval Warface Systems Center, designed to be placed in areas where security guards would not be awesome enough. Even better, the develops are planning on developing a swarm of 'slave robots' that would provide an all-around sensor and scouting networking, giving the ROBART III time to track and target intruders with its six-barrel pneumatically-powered gatling gun that fires tranquilizer darts or rubber bullets. Further research will add a beach-level scoop that will kick sand in the face of QRIOs.
