Blood Background? 01/25/2003 07:49 PM

Perhaps something 3d, but it wouldn't matter... I searched all around google and could not find one, nor have I been able to make a good one using photoshop... ...

Is A Google Background Check So Odd?

Is A Google Background Check So Odd? 04/12/2004 03:27 PM
Earlier this year we spoke about how the old "references available upon request" line at the end of resumes was incredi bly out-dated in an age when most references are available by Google. It appears that not everyone has received that memo. Over at E-Media Tidbits, they're surprised that a newspaper needed a reader's suggestion to Google the backgrounds of three candidates for the local school superintendent job.

MT Background Processing Limitations

MT Background Processing Limitations 09/07/2004 08:30 AM

One of the cool new things in Movable Type 3.x is that it forks processes to do stuff in the background. For instance, if you save an entry, you don't have to wait for it to rebuild. MT runs the rebuild process in the background, and the entry quietly rebuilds within 30 seconds or so of you saving the entry and returning to the menu screen.

However, this morning I was mass deleting 60+ comment spams (another great new feature: search for comments by IP). MT 3.x is automatically rebuilds the entry when you delete a comment (great improvement, BTW), so 60+ entries were rebuilding at the same time in the background.

Now, we all know that MT isn't terribly efficient with the database calls (doesn't have to be when it's write-one, read-many), so the database must have been getting hammered while these entries were rebuilding.

I made a change to another entry, tried to save it, and got this:

Got an error: Bad ObjectDriver config: Connection error: User [removed]@localhost has already more than 'max_user_connections' active connections

A small price to pay for background processing, but they probably should have trapped the error. Now I'm left wondering how many of my entries actually rebuilt, and how many died in process due to this error. Since they were being rebuilt in the background and thus wouldn't display an errror, I may never know.

The solution: Rebuild All Files. My hosting company must hate me.

As the various internet job sites try to differentiate themselves from each other, HotJobs has now added a feature to let users do a background check on themselves. You assume that someone will know if they're lying on their resume, but the point is (similar to doing a credit check on yourself) to get an idea of what potential employers will see on your background check, and making sure that everything is accurate (or, to make sure that your little untruths aren't revealed).

Now You Need A Background Check For Your
Online Date

Now You Need A Background Check For Your
Online Date
04/19/2004 10:59 PM
It seems that with the popularity of online dating, a variety of new companies are springing up around the space to offer value-added services in conjunction with online dating services. The most popular seems to be the standard background check to make sure that the person you're about to meet isn't 10 years older than they claim, isn't married, or isn't wanted in multiple states. There are also "authentication" programs that will verify the data about an individual for a price -and they can post that info to their dating profile. One company that does such authentication doubles as a photo studio where they promise to take nice photos of you for the dating site (and will put in a note saying exactly when the photo was taken, so you know it's not from decades past). It's always interesting to see outside companies spring up around successful businesses, and now the question is whether or not any of the dating sites will simply start to offer their own such services (or buy some of these outside providers).

This week, you lame and laggardly louts, we're going to "Bravely go where no Noobies have gone before." We'll fly into the background from the command line interface, and return! But before we do, some good news. It seems that the professional guidance I reported last week may not have been correct after all. There really are some noobies out there who want to learn a little something about the CLI. At least, there is a new book for them. It's from O'Reilly. It's called the "Linux Pocket Guide" by Daniel Barrett. O'Reilly describes it as "a useful alternative for new and experienced Linux users who need a quick and handy means to look up Linux commands." Imagine that, and for normal users to boot. Wish I had thought of something like that and proposed it to a publisher.
