RSS native parsing in the next Firebird
RSS native parsing in the next Firebird
02/10/2004 02:42 AMThis is new to me. I was checking out the nightly builds of
Firebird 0.8 betas (windows and linux, mac<
/a>) and they'
ve got an rss button and panel that parses RSS, with titles
linking to the main window. Slick, but they need to let you track
which ones have new/old items.
update: It turns out I'm actually a dumbass. I
installed this RSS
extension so long ago I forgot about it, and because I never saw
it show up in any menu, I figured it never "took" on my Firebird
install. Then when I had the new nightly build the toolbars were out
of whack on first run so I went to customize them and saw the RSS
button for the first time, and assumed it came with Firebird 0.8. My
bad.

Oracle 9i is a native XML database
06/27/2002 02:08 AMAt this point I have to say there's little reason for products like
Software AG Tamino to exist anymore. Even if there is some speed
advantage to Tamino and brethren, it's simply lacking in almost every
other regard. This is especially damning given that Tamino and
brethren will cost more for most simple implementations. There's
plenty of room for native XML databases to play in smaller apps and
for apps requiring DTDs, but when it comes to large corporate
repositories of data, there's really no reason now to go away from the
existing relational databases. I expect IBM and Microsoft to be coming
out with products of similar power in the near future. -- Kimbro

Talis Moving Towards Native RSS Feeds,

Talis Moving Towards Native RSS Feeds,
Too?
02/01/2005 10:10 PMLast week, Paul
Miller left a comment on this site saying that Talis, an ILS vendor in the U.K., had
blogged some ideas about RSS in the catalog. I meant to get back to
it, but didn't until today when I also saw a link to Talis RSS
Feed via del.icio.us/rss.
So first of all, blogged?? An ILS vendor is blogging??
Heck, yeah. Check out
Panlibus here! The RSS post is titled RSS Is Not Just Another TLA, and it includes a discussion
about patron data feeds. Go and score, Talis!
Even better, it's an interesting blog, comprised of
musings and reflections by Talis staff. They even blogged last week's
ALA Midwinter conference. I'm subscribed (feed here)!
When you're done there, check out their explanation of
RSS, which is where you'll also find a link to their company RSS feed!
There's even an RSS heart and an easy-to-find link to the feed on their home page! Goal-o!
All of which has to make you think that they're on the verge of
offering native RSS feeds out of the catalog. That would make two
vendors, and I've now heard about two others that are working on it.
If just those four vendors go live with feeds this year, I think we'll
have an official tipping point!

Sony May Support Native MP3 (What Took

09/22/2004 04:23 PMOh ho! Sony, who I had already pretty much counted out of the
portable music game, has just stepped back up to the plate with the
announcement (which makes for really boring baseball, really) that
they will be supporting MP3 on their players, starting with
flash players and going from there. That's the good news. The bad news
is that their plans aren't official yet, so they could still drop the
ball if they aren't careful. Oh, and there's nothing saying that the
existing product line - on which millions of dollars worth of
marketing and distribution have been slathered - will be able to be
upgraded to support native MP3 playback.
Figure it out, Sony! And hurry!

Review: Final Cut Studio
06/24/2005 09:36 PMIn PC Magazine, Jan Ozer gives Final Cut Studio 4.5 out of 5, writing,
Apples Final Cut Studio should prove irresistible for
business pros and videographers getting started with video production
on the Mac. The attractively priced (for this class) suite includes
Final Cut Pro 5, Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro 4, and a new audio editor,
Soundtrack Pro all of which are capable of fairly sophisticated
production chores that should suit the needs of all but broadcast
professionals. Also, new features added to the three legacy products
should make many current users consider upgrading. [Jun 24,

Apple unveils Final Cut Studio
Apple unveils Final Cut Studio
04/17/2005 06:47 PMApple today announced updates to its professional suite of
applications — Final Cut Pro HD, DVD Studio Pro and Motion — along
with the re-emergence of Soundtrack as a standalone app and a new
bundle, Final Cut Studio.
Final Cut Studio brings together the latest versions of Apple’s video
production products: Final Cut Pro 5, Motion 2 and DVD Studio Pro 4,
along with an updated version of Soundtrack. According to Apple, this
is what you get for $1,299 ($699 upgrade from Final Cut Pro; $499 from
Production Suite):
Final Cut Pro 5
Make videos and movies in any format with Final Cut Pro 5, a major
upgrade to Apple's award-winning video editing application. It
features powerful new multi-camera editing, native HDV support,
precision editing tools, scalable real-time effects processing,
advanced real-time color correction and image manipulation filters and
audio control surface support.
Soundtrack Pro
Use action-based editing to creatively design new sounds, instantly
repair imperfect location recordings, add perfect sound effects or
musical Apple Loops, save hours bringing audio in and out of your
video editor thanks to seamless integration with Final Cut Pro and
more.
Motion 2
Whether you're animating broadcast graphics, corporate presentations,
feature film titles, or DVD menus, you'll find an original, fresh
toolset and new features such as GPU-accelerated rendering, amazing
new filters and effects and more.
DVD Studio Pro 4
Whether you produce demo reels, complex commercial titles or anything
in between, DVD Studio Pro 4 offers simple, powerful tools for
authoring DVDs. The latest upgrade introduces the next-generation of
DVD delivery with HD DVD support for both H.264 and HDV and advanced
authoring options like Alpha Transitions and multiple video and audio
tracks.
Each of the above applications are available as standalone
applications, with Soundtrack Pro and Motion coming in at $299; DVD
Studio Pro for $499; and Final Cut Pro for $999. Upgrades are
available for prior owners, as well as “special pricing” of $99 for
owners of Soundtrack. All of the above applications are set to be
released in May.
Editor’s note: In the technical specs for DVD Studio Pro, playing back
high-definition DVDs requires a "Macintosh computer with PowerPC G5,"
"Apple DVD Player v4.6" and "Mac OS X v10.4.1" Rumors have persisted
that Apple, since joining the Blu-ray Disc Association, will add the
drive to its next line-up of Power Mac G5 computers. Apple has in the
past shipped special versions of its operating system in order to
