Gucci serves up Apple iPod a la mode

As part of its spring line, fashion label Gucci is selling a $195 carrying case designed specifically for Apple Computer's popular music player. At that price, the ebony-and-beige, coated-canvas case costs nearly as much as an iPod itself.

The Dunhill cigarette company has made a cigarette-case-style case for the iPod, which, in classinc Dunhill hyperbole, they describe as "ergonomic and luxurious." One thing I've learned since moving to the UK: anytime something is described as "luxurious" (i.e. "Luxury hot cocoa") it is anything but. Nevertheless, the Dunhill cases look pretty rad. That's right; a tube sock to hold an iPod, and it's up for grabs on eBay. From the looks of the pictures linked to the auction, it's not even a new sock.

The thought process that went into developing this product must've really been something. A true creative genius at work. I wonder if he'd mind if I borrowed his idea and marketed it myself... I smell an opportunity!

Well, we're nothing if not keen to further the awareness of such products as the Piel Frama Ostrich Leather Case for your iPod mini. The "luxurious and unusual ostrich leather case" is $95 but currently out of stock at iPodWorld. RetroPod: Hipster Hard Case for iPod 07/01/2004 12:31 PM

retropod_wink.jpg image

The god damned hipsters have struck again -- and this time, it's portable. The Retropod is a, uhm, retrofitting of older Sony "Sports Walkmans" that is probably the very least functional case for iPods I've ever seen. All you get is a headphone out, and you have to open up the case to get to the controls. Even the inline remote won't work, because of the way the headphone extender works. But hey, their models are cute and that goes a long way, even if I can smell the reek of Pabst right through the JPEG.

Now if the only option they offered were the $100 version, I'd have to throw them back out on the curb where they mate and sleep, but since they also have a $20 DIY version (Walkman not included), we'll let it slide for now.

It features an on/off switch that allows you to dictate when you want it to supply power to your iPod, four LED lights that indicate how much juice it has left and a belt clip. In addition, Tunemax offers a USB port for syncing an iPod with your Mac, and an included mini-round-pin-to-FireWire cable can charge Tunemax from the computer's FireWire port. It's compatible with all iPods, although a sleeve such as Tunewear's Icewear is required to make an iPod mini fit snugly in Tunemax. Pricing was not announced, although Tunewear will display Tunemax at nest week's Apple Expo 2004 in Paris.

Macworld review: Finale 2004 and
Sibelius 3.1
06/24/2004 11:12 AM
Market-leading rivals Sibelius 3.1, from Sibelius, and Finale 2004, from MakeMusic, remain the most full-featured, one-size-fits-all packages available for producing printed musical scores. Choosing between the two isn't simply a matter of determining what kind of notation you're creating, because either can produce nearly anything you can imagine, from the common to the obscure. Both feature guitar tablatures, avant-garde contemporary notations, percussion-specific symbols and staffs, and even notation you may not have heard of, such as the shape-note notation used in Early American church music and featured in the recent movie Cold Mountain. These programs are so evenly matched, most people will rely on personal tastes to choose one.

2004: the year of the iPod

2004: the year of the iPod 01/04/2005 02:30 AM

Remember Bill Clinton's campaign mantra back in 1993? "It's the economy, stupid." If Apple had a mantra for 2004, it would be something along the lines of "it's the iPod, stupid." The last year saw sales of the iPod explode and eventually overtake Apple's desktops and laptops. Mac.Ars looks back at Apple's 2004, with its top ten stories and events of the year.

Apple's profits and revenues rose to levels not seen in nearly a decade, while they couldn't make enough iPods to satisfy demand. Along with the good came the bad — lawsuits, and shortages of key components (like CPUs) which kept products from shipping on time and even resulted in a nearly three-month gap in the iMac line up.

Check out the top Apple stories of 2004 in this edition of Mac.Ars.
