Humans are generous if watched, even by

David Pescovitz: Last week, I posted about a scientific study demonstrating that monkeys think about whether they'll be seen before they swipe food that's not theirs. Similarly, humans donate more to charity if they're being watched. And oddly, this is true even if the gaze is coming from a photo of an anthropomorphic robot. Researchers at Harvard University tested the altruism of 96 volunteers with a game involving the donation of money. From New Scientist:
Projects Sociable Menzel-Interest-Web The researchers split the group into two. Half made their choices undisturbed at a computer screen, while the others were faced with a photo of Kismet - ostensibly not part of the experiment. The players who gazed at the cute robot gave 30 per cent more to the pot than the others. (Investigators Terry) Burnham and (Brian) Hare believe that at some subconscious level they were aware of being watched. Being seen to be generous might mean an increased chance of receiving gifts in future or less chance of punishment...

Burnham believes that even though the parts of our brain that carry out decision-making know that the robot image is just that, Kismet's eyes trigger something more deep-seated. We can manipulate altruistic behaviour with a pair of fake eyeballs because ancient parts of our brain fail to recognise them as fake, he says.

Sending a Robot to Do a Man's work?

Sending a Robot to Do a Man's work? 05/04/2004 07:47 AM
NASA is pondering whether or not to send a robot to fix Hubble. With the Shuttles down for human missions, a robotic mission may be the only option to save Hubble. NASA must act fast because the batteries on Hubble will fail sometime before 2008 if not replaced by then. The mission will cost a minimum of $300 million (likely much more to do any useful fixing). The mission would consist of sending a robot atop a rocket for a stop at Hubble with replacement parts like batteries, gyroscopes, and a new engine or two. The problem appears to be that today's robotics are still not as good as humans to deal with cantankerous problems like outer doors that won't close properly allowing light in where light is not supposed to be (not good for a telescope). Robots just can't seem to do what humans do, but they can be cheaper and safer. And, if robots work out for fixing Hubble, it may be a feather in the robot's hat for possible future Moon and Mars missions.

Robot Work Force: A Blessing or a Curse?

Robot Work Force: A Blessing or a Curse? 10/30/2003 11:57 PM
Marshall Brain is stirring up more controversy. Roland Piquepaille notes in his blog that while Brain's last article "Robotic Nation" warned that robots could displace the human workforce causing massive unemployment, now he has done a 180 and is promoting the idea as a Utopian ideal he calls "Robotic Freedom". Imagine a world in which robots do all the work and humans are all on permanent vacation (government welfare). Everyone will become a creative artist and be happy, right? Marshall is a little late in stumbling onto these ideas. Science Fiction readers have been pondering this sort of thing for half a century. And if anyone, including Brain, actually believes "Robotic Freedom" is a good idea, they should read Jack Williamson's 1947 story, With Folded Hands and be very, very afraid. "To serve and obey and guard men from harm..."

Imagine a firefighter scrambling through a burning building, searching for survivors of a devastating explosion. Injured people on the far side of a brick wall, but out of reach. However, the partner on the other side promptly smashes through the wall, clears a path so both can help the survivors. Science fiction perhaps? No, this is exactly the scenario that partners in the PELOTE project have been working on. [PRWEB Apr 15, 2005]

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Don Box: Today, the data needed to initialize an object graph is hidden behind imperative statements in your programming language of choice. That makes it difficult to tease out of the rest of your program without weird markers in the source code to delimit the structure of your code into recognizable pieces.

My previous post on this subject had more to it, but I chickened out and didn't post it.  What the heck, I could be wrong, but... here's essentially what I said.

Humans vs Robots on Mars

Humans vs Robots on Mars 01/11/2004 08:15 PM
The Washington Post has an editorial on manned vs robotic Mars exploration by Robert Zubrin, president of the Mars Society. The erroneous idea that robots will eliminate human space travel seems to come up whenever a space mission is in the news and we've covered it before. Zubrin points out that while robots are useful, fun, and cheap ways of exploring, many of the tasks involved in looking for life would be much easier for a human explorer. And, regardless of how many robots are sent to Mars for exploration, humans will still go themselves eventually in order to live there.

Why Humans Must Return To The Moon

Why Humans Must Return To The Moon 12/09/2003 05:02 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes "Space.com gives us "10 Reasons to Put Humans Back on the Moon." While some of these reasons seem obvious, like our needs for dreams or a common goal for nations to collaborate, some are less expected, like generating energy from lunar power stations. This also could lead to the arrival of space tourism and to a better knowledge of our past through the analysis of craters and rocks in situ. And many new things also might be invented on the Moon just to live there. Finally, with men on the Moon, future explorations of Mars or asteroids could be easier to organize. The original article is spread over ten pages, so I put the full list of these ten reasons on my blog as a single page for your convenience, along with short quotes and other references. "

When All The Humans Are Gone From
Customer Support

When All The Humans Are Gone From
Customer Support
12/29/2004 10:35 PM
The NY Times is running an article similar to ones that others have run before, noting how incredibly difficult it is to actually get a human on the phone these days when you need customer support from a company. While many people know the "tricks" such as hitting 0 to get around the painful menus, it looks like some companies are spending more time making it harder for customers to reach humans (rather than, say, actually figuring out ways to help their customers). This means that the "0" trick won't always work -- though, sometimes hitting it three or four times in a row will get you through. Other tricks include hitting the * key in the hopes of getting a company directory. What's still not clear is why companies do this. Most of these automated systems simply keep people on these phone calls for a longer period of time and tend to piss them off. My favorite system so far was a Comcast system that required me to go through twelve menus before I could speak to a human, whose first question to me was "what phone number are you calling from" when in step two or three I had specifically punched in my phone number.

Toshiba breeding Large Humans (TM)

Toshiba breeding Large Humans (TM) 01/09/2004 09:56 PM
From richinternetapps:
Toshiba today announced at the Consumer Electronics Show the result of a successful project to breed huge humans. Industry insiders suspect that with Moore's Law starting to crumble, and physical limits on lithographic technology causing tremendous problems on the continued minituarisation of a range of devices, that the solution was to breed huge people, which in the words of a spokesman, "...obviously have huge hands...".

Results of this programme are demonstrated in the above photographs showing large humans (TM) to scale against a traditional 40GB SCSI drive. As can be seen from the above images, the technoloy has also been applied to children, in attempts to bring school bullying to a historic end. Rumours that Toshiba have in fact just announced a tiny hard drive are being dismissed as ludicrous.

Humans and Robots Team Up for Soccer 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
TRNmag.com has an article about how Carnegie Mellon University researchers are putting bots and humans together to play soccer. Humans get to ride segway scooters and the bots are modified segway scooters that can kick a ball around. This will allow researchers to study how robots and humans can interact and work together. All of the human/robot soccer rules haven't been finalized yet, but as soon as they are, the research will begin. Of course this is another project initiated by DARPA.

Humans Beat Machines in SodaRace For Now

Humans Beat Machines in SodaRace For Now 12/02/2003 12:22 AM
Cnet says that Humans beat AI in robot wars. It's not really a war per se, but rather it's an online competition called the SodaRace which pits humans against virtual robots. It seems that Canadian humans won the first round by creating a machine using trial and error. It may not be a fair test of man vs machine, but interesting nevertheless. If you would like, you can also create and play around with your own soda robots using the sodaconstructor to test your intelligence abilities. You may have seen the sodaconstructor before, but it's the competition of human vs. ai that makes it very interesting. It may be hard to overcome human craftyness but like recent chess matches demonstrate, it may instead be hard to beat the computer. It runs on Java and it's cool. Check it out.
