More parking hijinks 12/19/2004 03:34 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: The folks at LAist purposely parked a car in ways that inconvenienced others, just to find out what kind of angry notes people would slip under the windshield wiper.
At Virgin Megastore (Sunset Boulevard), parked in two spaces because said car was so precious, we couldn't risk being near any car at all: "Take your head out of your ass and realize there are other people who need to park -- asshole! If I had time to wait for you I would then I'd kick your ass for being so greedy!!!!

Bedford drive, in Beverly Hills neighborhood: "Don't ever park in front of my driveway again or I will call the police. The police will be notified. The police will tow your car. Don't ever do this again!!

Self-parking Prius

Self-parking Prius 01/16/2004 11:35 AM
A $2,200 add-on to the new Toyota Prius hybrid car allows the car to parallel-park itself, using a sensor array.
A dashboard display shows the image taken by the camera. When you near a parking space and shift into reverse, computerized lines pop up on the display, along with arrows pointing up, down, left and right.

Using the arrows, you move the lines around until they define exactly where you want the car to be parked. Then you push the "set" button on the display.

Keep your foot lightly on the brake pedal, and the car will start backing up, the steering wheel responding to an invisible hand. Voila, the car will park itself in the spot you've chosen with the arrows.

Hit-and-run parking garage creep caught

Hit-and-run parking garage creep caught 04/13/2005 05:46 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Static Images Articles Buttlercolor Disney designer Steve Lodefink's car was in a parking garage and it got bashed by a hit-and-run driver. Steve found a stray hubcap next to his car, and using hupcaps.org, he identified the model of the car. He printed out a picture of the car (an aggressively ugly car called the Mazda MPV minivan) and sent it, along with a statement of the facts, to the parking garage management.

The parking garage management reviewed the security tapes and found the vehicle. Steve got the license plate number, tracked down the registered owner's name, address and telephone number, and sent it to his insurance company. He ended up getting "a check for the full amount of the damages minus the $100 deductable for my uninsured driver coverage."

Fighting Parking Tickets By Phone - Kind
Of
02/12/2004 02:44 AM
Not exactly sure what's going on here, but apparently there's a new service in NYC, San Francisco and Washington DC that will let you immediately begin fighting your parking ticket via your phone, the second you discover it. While the pitch sounds nice, the actual logistics aren't quite so simple. First of all, what if you actually deserve the parking ticket? I guess that's besides the point. Second, the fighting "immediately" part isn't entirely accurate. You have to dial a number from your mobile phone, input your ticket number and a credit card number - and then go find a computer to complete the process. That's right, the phone part is basically useless, since you have to end up at a computer anyway. More importantly, why do you need to input your credit card? The article claims "no additional cost", and you could even read the article in a way to believe that this is a system sponsored by the local government. It's not. It's run by a private company, and they take half of the parking ticket fee if you get out of the ticket. So, the "no additional cost" means no additional cost beyond half the price of the ticket, which you wouldn't have to pay at all if you get out of it the normal way.
