Thanks to the wonders of the internet, a couple weeks ago I got a
copy of To The 5 Boroughs, the new Beastie Boys album. It's not much
of a growth for them, sounding a lot like their previous record Hello Nasty. Most
of the songs are somewhat forgettable, but MCA gets props for the
following rhyme in It Takes Time to Build:
We got a president we didn't elect,
The Kyoto Treaty he decided to neglect...
I never thought environmental treaties would make it into
mainstream hip-hop songs, but the Beasties proved me wrong.
"It seems that Capitol Records has some sort of new copy protection
system, that automatically, silently, installs 'helpful' copy
protection software on MacOS and Windows as soon as you insert the CD
into default systems. Im not sure exactly what it does yet, but
I am sure regreting actually purchasing said media now they
dont deserve my money if they choose to pull stupid stunts like
this. Installing software without your permission sounds like viral
malware behaviour to me. I certainly hope the AV companies put
signatures into their products for this crap." [Security Focus, via Furdlog]

Noted for when patrons complain that the CD they checked out from
your library messed up their computer. Yeah, this is definitely the
way for the music industry to win back already angry customers.

Beastie Boys Embark on Traveling 'Pageant' (AP)09/25/2004 07:45 AM AP - The members of Beastie Boys are flashing liquor and cash while
betting on a street-level parlor game with a Jewish twist.
Instead of a 40-ounce brew, Adrock throttles a bottle of Manischewitz
wine. In lieu of dice, MCA tosses a dreidel as Mike D hangs back with
a gold Kiddush cup. Moments later, MCA, the band's self-styled Kung Fu
master, chops through a thick stack of matzo bread like Bruce Lee
busting through three-ply mahogany.

“You can duplicate CDs one by one in your own computer, or
buy a relatively inexpensive duplicator. But, better still, use the
services of an independent pressing plant to manufacture CDs. Many of
these suppliers can also print the graphics, or you can use a local
printer. Just don’t manufacture more than you can afford and are
reasonably certain you can sell. So once you’ve got your first
recorded project, how will you go about…

Sony And BMG To Merge - Record Label Consolidation Begins
Sony And BMG To Merge - Record Label Consolidation Begins11/06/2003 04:10 AM As the big five established record labels have continued to struggle
with the new digital world and all of the potential business models
they prefer to ignore, it's been no surprise that they've felt lost.
Thus, the rumors of mergers among the labels have been heating up over
the past few months. It looks like the race to merge has begun as the
NY Post is reporting that Sony Music and BMG
will merge. This follows a recent failed attempt to sell BMG to
Warner Music and continued talks to merge EMI with Warner. Of course,
big music label mergers in the past (EMI with BMG and Warner with EMI)
have been stopped by regulators, but this time people think regulators
are more open to the idea. Now, here's the tricky part: chances are
only one such merger will go through. So, if BMG/Sony makes it out
the door first, then it may kill off the plans of Warner and EMI.
Meanwhile, they'll all continue to miss any opportunity to actually
embrace new business models, but that's a story for another post.
