and the winners are 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
MoveOn's Bush-in-30-Second campaign has announced its winners. They are in four categories, and each is brilliantly done. I hope the same is done by the other side, when the Democrats finally find a candidate. Because what's great about this is that it marks the real beginning of iPolitics -- bottom-up media made real. Citizen- bloggers and digital media -- when Madison finally returns to "Madison Avenue." I understand that RNC is confused about the nature of this campaign. No doubt the folks responsible for the RNC ghost-written letters to the editor were sure that there could only be a media effort if it was controlled and directed from the top, so that when 2 out of the thousand entries (not 2 out of the 15 finalists) mentioned Hitler, they thought that MoveOn must have sponsored that message. But now that that confusion has been cleared up, I hope they too will enlist the public to make the President's message clear. If they do, we've got the tools to help spread the messages far.

I was doing a little development tonight, and I needed to check from email integration. I downloaded and installed a freeware SMTP server, and this is the icon that greeted me on my desktop:

Yes, that's a hand grenade behind an envelope, perhaps the least confidence-inspiring icon choice ever. Who thinks these things up? Can anyone else think of a worse choice for an icon?

SCO: Winners and Losers

SCO: Winners and Losers 11/19/2003 11:49 AM
The end game in the SCO fiasco is at hand. IBM's dissection of SCO's discovery wish-list is covered in exquisite detail at Groklaw. As yesterday's conference call demonstrated, SCO's lawyers are being forced to make increasingly bizarre arguments to just stay in the game. The company's last substantive filing demanded that the court find the GPL invalid and unconstitutional, and all software released under the GPL in the last three years to be public domain. At this point, it appears the entire SCO case will devolve to the nuts and bolts of contract agreements between IBM and AT&T. If you believe that IBM lawyers are stupid and sloppy, and have been for the last 20 years, then you might believe SCO has a chance. I don't.

Editor's note: Ahmad Baitalmal is the VP of IT for Etelos Systems, Inc., which is located in Issaquah, Washington. This commentary explains how and why RHN is not well-suited to his firm's needs. - It was a misty evening in Issaquah, WA, some time ago. With a brand new RedHat 7.2 installation, I had just finished moving our flagship product from an MS VB/SQL/ASP setup to PHP/PostgreSQL. The euphoria was rampant as we saw how quickly our slow pages were loading on our new platform. "Move us over dude!" said our CEO, referring to the company's mail server. The Mail move went smoothly as we left Exchange for Postfix. Everybody was set up and happy. We were dancing the victory dance, unaware of the mess that lay ahead.

Drupal is our CMS of choice

Drupal is our CMS of choice 04/26/2004 07:06 PM

I've been doing my own survey of the 'platforms' out there - and we're working with Drupal.  Looks like a  winner to me.

Thanks goes out to Julian Bond for cluing me in on Drupal - a long time ago.

Now that I've met Jonas and Chris and Walkah and Adrian and Neil and Dries - we're ready to bring free open source social networking - to everyone.  Oh and God bless FOAF and danbri too.

All headed towards a PeopleAggregator module for Drupal.

Content Management Systems for alternative media.

I'm looking into systems to set up an alternative media website.

Here are a few that I found today:

The independent media center uses Mir as an Open-Source content managment system.

The Boston Indymedia Center runs on dadalMC.

dadaIMC also sports a new "license" section, allowing the author to specify a distribution license, selecting from public domain, standard copyright, or one of the Creative Commons licenses.

The Wes Clark Community Network used Scoop. Here's an interesting one, publicaccesstv.net.

H ey look, demand media runs on Scoop too!
