Master Replicas announced their upcoming AT-AT replica today to their Collectors Society members. As expected, the 1,000 unit limited edition is $1199, payable 50% down and 50% at shipping, which is expected in October. Customer ordering directly from Master Replicas will also have their edition number stamped on the right rear foot, something they have not done before. Here is a copy of the AT-AT announcement. Collectors Society members can order beginning July 20. If you are attending San Diego Comic-Con, this piece will be on display in the Master Replicas part of the Lucasfilm Pavilion. You can also see photos of a prototype from Toy Fair this year in our photo archives.

We've just added detailed photos of the Master Replicas summer convention exclusive Mini Obi-Wan "As First Built" saber to our photo archive. Posted earlier today in our forums, Rebelscum has received further information on the UK Exclusive 0.45 scale Obi-Wan Lightsaber: two thousand will be sold through QVC in the UK (as well as some specialist sources), but US collectors are getting a bite as well because WalMart will also be selling a further five hundred. A little over a year ago I started a little Master Replicas case project, trying to fill in the void they created by not offering cases for the Darth Maul saber and Jedi Training Remote replicas. What was first going to be 10 cases for fellow collectors in the forum ended up being hundreds of cases made by the same company that does them for Master Replicas. As such, the fit and finish is identical to the second generation and currently shipping cases. I've shipped all the committed cases and still have a few left. This is a gold version of their Convention Exclusive saber Master Replics first sold last weekend in San Diego, and will be selling at all the major conventions this year. Cory Doctorow: Girasol Collectables is a small Canadian press that's producing high-quality facimilies of classic pulp magazines (I bought a copy of this Spicy Adventure Stories mag yesterday for the cover, without realizing that one of the stories was written by Robert Howard under his Sam Walser pseudonym) at the rate of one a month. At US$25-35 per issue, it's a little pricey to consider as a subscription item, but as a one-off, these things are fantastic. I love the old pulps, but when I buy them, I'm reluctant to give them a home beside the toilet, where they'd be great reading material, what with all their humorous quack-remedy ads, overblown short stories, and general bite-siized irony. But the old pulps feel like a piece of history, something you down own so much as take custody over -- they're so fragile and poorly wrought that they bring out the maternal/archival instinct in all but the most hardened junk-hater.

But these replicas -- in addition to being better-manufactured than any of the original pulps! -- are cheap(ish) and replaceable, and a perfect tank-top reader. I kept hauling out my copy yesterday and showing it around, and the universal reaction among the WorldCon-goers was a bittersweet sigh of regret for the passing of the golden age of dreadful fic and exploitative covers and quack advertisements.
