IBM's Massive Grid Storage System Not
Working So Well
07/28/2004 01:06 PMIBM has been touting their grid/utility computing effort and it's
ability to distribute and scale the load as high as necessary. They
certainly picked a big project to prove some of the grid storage
claims, and now it's looking like they may have bitten off way more
than they can realistically chew. They're supposed to be setting up a
grid-based storage system that can store 34 terabytes of data a day
continuously, with that number growing to 100 terabytes a day a few
years later. The project is a particle accelerator that will be
continuously generating a ton of data analyzing 40 million particle
collisions per second. The only problem is that, so far, IBM hasn't
been able to get the system to handle more than 28 terabytes of data
(less than a single day's worth) and there has yet to be a single
successful test, as
the system apparently hangs and crashes every time they try. Of
course, it's not unusual for projects not to work well early on, but
there are growing concerns that this isn't just early problems, but a
more fundamental issue about how this storage system is supposed to
work.

Tank Floor & Tank Bottom Corrosion

Tank Floor & Tank Bottom Corrosion
Problems
09/20/2004 08:45 AMSince the introduction of steel tanks in the late 19th century
corrosion has been an archenemy. Each year thousands of aboveground
and underground steel tanks develop corrosion permeations that allow
their contained liquids to escape into the environment. Depending on
the product and where it ends up, the outcome can have disastrous
consequences. The vast majority of these tank problems develop at or
near the bottom of these tanks. [PRWEB Sep 20, 2004]

Appears in Google
"About a month ago ago ResourceShelf offered a few
comments along with a link to Barbara
Quint's excellent article about OCLC's relationship with Google.
Quint's
article broke the news that OCLC was supplying Google with about 1
million WorldCat bibliographic records for inclusion into the Google
database.
Today, the first OCLC Open WorldCat record appeared in the Google
database. It's a link to the bibliographic record (the record itself
is not yet online) for Walter Isaacson's biography of Benjamin
Franklin. A major questions was where a bib record would appear on a
Google list of results. For many web searchers, if it's not in the
first ten results then it's as good as not being there in the first
place. A sad but true comment. Here are a few sample searches for Ben
Franklin (combined with other terms) to see where the records appears.
I attempted to create search strings like that of an average
searcher.

Similar to the Canadian carded figures, the Mexican figures are
sporting the expected Tri-logo packaging, but unlike those found in
Canada, the Mexican figures lack the goofy ‘Look At The Silly Action
Feature’ sticker. In addition, the Mexican figures also have a Fan
Club sticker on the underside of the blister unique to their cards, as
shown in the images above provided by Rebelscum reader Alberto. Though
he only bought Tarfful, he mentions that he also found Anakin,
Obi-Wan, Yoda, and the Darth Vader Voice Changer. He also reports that
figures are being spotted at Wal-Marts across the country.
