GPLed code generates automated Comp Sci

04/13/2005 03:19 PMCory Doctorow:
A GPL'ed automated computer science paper generator programmed by MIT
students produces results so good that the output has been accepted at
conferences.
Here are two papers we submitted to WMSCI 2005:
* Rooter: A Methodology for the Typical Unification of Access
Points and Redundancy (PS, PDF)
Jeremy Stribling, Daniel Aguayo and Maxwell Krohn
This paper was recently accepted as a "non-reviewed" paper!
God, between the pompous CS-speak ("few hackers worldwide would
disagree with the essential unification of voice-over-IP and
public/private key pair. In order to solve this riddle, we confirm
that SMPs can be made stochastic, cacheable, and interposable") and
the amazing diagrams, this thing is nearly the funniest thing EVAR.

Linux/sf convention call for papers
07/31/2004 02:04 PMMark sez, "Linucon, a combination science fiction convention and Linux
expo is looking for panelists and papers for their upcoming event."
We're looking for several different types of programming. On the Geek
side we have "Heavy technical", which includes topics like
programming, system administration, and security, and "Light
technical", which is about using computers rather than programming
them (Digital art, electronic publishing, online communities, Linux on
the Desktop, Open source in business, video games, etc). On the Fandom
side, our main themes this year include literary topics (for authors,
editors, publishers, and readers), Anime (and Manga), gaming,
costuming... There are also "crossover" topics (like online comics and
computer animation) that appeal to both sides.

Computer Generated Papers Get Accepted
For Conference
04/11/2005 03:31 PMIn the last couple of months, I've started receiving requests
addressed to Dr. Masnick asking me to submit papers to random and
oddly named conferences. While there are a few Dr. Masnicks out
there (some of whom are closely related), I've never made it that high
up the academic food chain. I've been ignoring the emails assuming
they were simply from confused individuals, but it seems like plenty
of others have been receiving similar requests. One grad student at
MIT got so fed up with the requests that he wrote a fake research
paper generator and submitted some of the results --
which were accepted to these conferences. While the post
linked from here suggests that the reviewers of the submissions aren't
being very careful, you have to wonder if this is something of a scam
-- like the various "Who's Who" books where they try to get people to
buy these books that will just list anyone who pays.
