Repeat After Me: "I am not a dork..." 01/16/2004 11:33 AM

Internet 'Geek' Image Shattered by New Study: I just knew I wasn't a dork. Awesome.

...the typical Internet user is an avid reader of books and spends more time engaged in social activities than the non-user, it says. And, television viewing is down among some Internet users by as much as five hours per week compared with Net abstainers, the study added.

This is a must read:  "We're looking for a few boring dorks; the engineer shortage made simple."

[Forwarded to me by an MIT faculty member who probably wishes to remain anonymous.  Posted from the delightful FBO in hip lakeside Madison, Wisconsin (UW is not a "tech dork mill"), about to leave for Winnipeg.]

Repeat after me: there is no black iPod

Repeat after me: there is no black iPod 11/12/2003 04:31 PM
Back in April, when the new iPods came out, a photo circulated of what looked like a black iPod, but which turned out to actually be a regular white iPod that had been backlit to show off its illuminated buttons. Somehow completely missing all this and failing to even do the most cursory factcheck to determine whether these actually exist or not, Gotham magazine just wrote up a piece touting Apple's "SLEEK NEW BLACK MODEL" iPod for their Novemeber issue. Just when you thought people would've learned from the travesty that was formmail.pl... Movable Type comes, by default, with a program mt-send-entry.cgi that's supposed to allow pretty much anyone to send a blog entry to pretty much anyone else. Except, interestingly, it allows anyone to send anything to just about anyone else. (With a little tag that says its from your blog, of course) It would seem that deleting or chmod -xing mt-send-entry.cgi would be a good idea if you've got a Movable Type installation....

Condemned To Repeat The Past?

Condemned To Repeat The Past? 04/13/2005 06:17 AM
Last week, I mentioned one of the lessons learned from Andy Kessler's newest book, How We Got Here: A Slightly Irreverent History of Technology and Markets. I've just finished reading it, and just in time, as well, since you can now check it out for free. While the hard copy version doesn't come out until June, Kessler is releasing the book for free download off his site in e-book form. If you read his previous book, Running Money, you might even recognize a few short passages in the new book. In Running Money, Kessler goes through his own experience figuring out the mental model that guided his investment philosophy in technology -- and part of that included a brief history lesson in the start of the industrial revolution. HWGH is basically an extended version of that history lesson, written in the same light tone -- designed to be the basic, quick history manual that anyone in the tech world (in just about any capacity, from engineer to business to investing) should read. Indeed, we're already seeing startups and companies making business decisions that seem like they're following the same bad footsteps companies took only five years ago. Is it any surprise that some are repeating the mistakes of 200 years ago as well? One of the worst things in the tech and business world these days is that many people can't view trends out past a quarter (or they simply extract one single trend, without recognizing how others impact them). Any intelligent business person needs to recognize how trends play out in the long term, and how they interact with each other. HWGH gives you plenty of trends from the past few centuries to help guide you into that longer term thinking.

Repeat After Me: A Book is a Book

Repeat After Me: A Book is a Book 07/13/2004 03:49 PM
This NY Times piece compares Amazon.com with Napster. Huh? The odd logic is that used books sold online are cutting into sales of new books, which may or may not be true. But the Napster comparison is ludicrous for some obvious reasons, including the fact that an actual book is not a digitized song, and that if I'm holding a specific book you are not holding the same copy. The Times piece is about the "doctrine of first sale," which basically says that once a work is sold, it's gone from the creator's control. The purchaser of the item can resell it, give it away or throw it in the garbage, if that's what he wants to do. Copyright holders have never liked this very much, and I can sympathize. Visual artists who see escalating prices for works they sold at bargain when they were starting out tend to really not like this situation. But the doctrine of first sale is vastly better than the alternative. The idea that the copyright owner should get a cut every time a book changes hands is a Pandora's box. It's also just what copyright industry would like to see happen, and that's what the entertainment industry is trying to create with its various digital restrictions technologies. The industry wants a pay-per-use world of arts and letters. Resist. And let's please not equate selling a used book with copyright infringement.
