Chasing Microsoft's silver foxes 12/06/2003 04:30 PM
“These three machines need to stay on Windows 98 because … .” Anybody heard that before? Even companies with medium-sized user loads often have combinations of platform and software that make it temporarily impossible to upgrade to a modern operating system wholesale. That means you’re stuck supporting OSes such as Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT Workstation, and even Windows 95. What’s worse, you’re not only supporting these platforms on their own; you’re supporting them as they try and interact with Windows 2000, Active Directory, and the Internet. All this without formal support from Microsoft. What’s a geek to do?

While conventional wisdom is that venture capital moves in a sheep-like herd, all investing in similar "hot" space, not all deals fit those criteria. The latest venture capital study of VC investments in 2003 tur ned up a number of investments that are considered "odd", in that they're certainly not in areas where you see VCs shoving each other aside to get in on the deal. This includes the makers of "hybrid" metal/wood baseball bats and a company that makes energy efficient traffic lights, with security cameras hidden inside. Of course, if you look at the numbers of these deals, they all tend to be pretty small bets, so you have to wonder if there's something more to the deal. The article also doesn't identify who the VC was who invested in these deals - and my guess is that they're not done by any of the bigger name VCs, but rather smaller niche market VCs.

Calypso Starts Chasing Patent Infringers

Calypso Starts Chasing Patent Infringers 03/06/2004 01:49 AM
Calypso, which recently was awarded a patent on technology than enables roaming between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, named vendors that it says infringe on the patent: The company said that that patent would have major implications on the way Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia do business. The press release also said that companies that don't want to license the technology right now but plan eventually to make devices that roam between networks will have to obtain rights from Calypso but doesn't explain why that's so. I've asked leaders of a few companies such as Radioframe and Bridgeport--both are working on roaming between cellular and Wi-Fi networks--for their take on the Calypso patent and neither was interested in commenting. I had a similar experience when looking for comment on the patent for redirect that Nomadix received recently. However, this story quotes the CTO of Birdstep as saying that its technology, which enables roaming between the networks, doesn't interfere with the Calypso patent. Perhaps that means that companies may be able to get around having to license from Calypso. On a side note, parts of Calypso's Web site are pretty amusing. On the company history page, I found this statement: "Calypso stunned the telecommunication industry when it introduced the world's first and only mobile video phone" That's interesting as I'm not sure I recall that happening nor have I heard of any operator selling the product. I wouldn't call that "stunning" the industry....

First, the Project Atmosphere Canada offers a module to educate primary and secondary students about cloud formation and characteristics (1). The website outlines key points and offers a more in-depth discussion of water vapor, cloud formation, convection, air motion, severe weather, and more. The second website, by Scholastic, supplies many pdf documents of activities and lesson plans for all types of weather phenomena including clouds (2). Students can learn about condensation, discover what makes up a cloud, and find a key identifying the cloud types. Next, USA Today offers an online tutorial of the differing characteristics of clouds (3). Users can learn about Mammatus clouds, contrails, cloud seeding, and other cloud-related topics. At the fourth website, visitors can view meteorologist Dan Satterfield's amazing cloud photographs (4). Educators may find useful materials to supplement their lectures. Next, NASA's Climate and Radiation Branch furnishes "information on the fantastic variety of cloud forms and structures, and their implications for climate" (5). While the website is still being constructed, users can find useful information about the Bounded Cascades Fractal Cloud model, animations, and definitions of inhomogeneous cloud terminology. The sixth website, created by the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, addresses how clouds impact our lives, how they cause chaos, and how they form (6). The enlightening descriptions are packed with colorful images and short quizzes. Next, The Australian Government's Bureau of Meteorology describes the useful of clouds as an indicator of weather conditions (7). After learning how moist air can form clouds, individuals can view images of the ten most common cloud types. Lastly, Enchanted Learning offers a table of the cloud types with their abbreviation, appearance, composition, and altitude along with explanations of cloud formation and the atmosphere (8). Educators can find simple activities dealing with cloud types and the water cycle.
