Mobile Phone Firms Link for New High-Speed Standard (Reuters)
Mobile Phone Firms Link for New High-Speed Standard (Reuters)01/03/2005 04:54 PM Reuters - Leading wireless carriers and telecoms
equipment makers have agreed to develop an advanced mobile
phone standard capable of sending high-resolution video in an
instant, Japan's NTT DoCoMo said on Friday.
However, they seem to have lifted the entire description of what a blog is
directly from Wikipedia without
attribution, which, as far as I can tell, is a GNU FDL violation.
Wikipedia.fi has more.
Also, looking at a sample blog, it seems that they
are claiming copyright on anything that anyone writes on their own
blog, and apparently they're not making you even agree on a license
before you use the service. This is simply wrong - you simply cannot
assert copyright on something that you don't own. If you write a
blog, you own its content - regardless of who hosts it.
Saunalahti seems to be pretty lax about copyright issues. This
will bite them in the ankle, I'm sure.

EasyMobile: a mobile phone company without phones or towers
EasyMobile: a mobile phone company without phones or towers08/11/2004 09:48 AM The EasyGroup (who provide the discount EasyJet airline and the cheap
EasyInternet cafes) have launched a mobile phone company called, what
else, EasyMobile. EasyMobile -- which leases capacity on other
carriers' networks -- won't give away free phones with their plans;
instead, they'll just sell you a SIM card and rely on you to find a
phone somewhere. Given that most mobile phone carriers give you a new
phone annually if you threaten to quit, a lot of Easy's ptoential
customers have a wealth of easily unlockable phones kicking around,
ready to be used with an Easy SIM. And since Easy isn't giving away
phones, it can roll those savings back into cheaper airtime and
services.
EasyMobile is to be launched in December at the latest on the British
market and if all goes well the service will be expanded to the Czech
Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the
Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.

Lindows Offers Free OS Download
Lindows Offers Free OS Download04/15/2004 02:21 PM Following up on its 'Linspired' name change, the Linux distributor
comes up with another inspired idea with no cost.
In my experience, most of the RIAA-hating nerds who swear they'll
never to buy another album again continue to download copyrighted,
RIAA-financed music from less-than-legal sources (and I've done it,
too, so simmer down). What's crazy, though, is that if you
really don't want to bend any laws, there is a wealth of free
music online -- and The Red Ferret Journal just set up a Wiki (a
user-edited web page) to make it even easier. There are hundreds of
thousands of freely downloadable songs on the websites listed (some of
them are even not techno) and thousands more non-RIAA-backed
labels selling songs, too -- so if you really want to fill up that
iPod without "stealing music," you do have an option to do
so.
Mainly, though, I just wanted you to feel extra guilty when you
download RIAA music anyway.

Lockergnome Download: Free RSS Reader for Pocket PCs08/15/2004 10:58 PM RSS Sync is a Pocket PC 2003 ActiveSync Extension. It synchronizes
RSS/RDF news to your PDA - effectively creating an offline newsreader.
The sync program updates RSS data at scheduled intervals. Data is then
synchronized to the PDA, where it can be viewed in the RSS Viewer

so you can carry the information with you anywhere and examine it
without being connected on the internet. When a link to a website is
provided with the RSS article, you can activate it and be redirected
to a web-browser, which connects and retrieves the web-site online.
Stross's magnificent ACCELERANDO as a free CC download
Stross's magnificent ACCELERANDO as a free CC download06/17/2005 03:35 PM Cory Doctorow:
Charlie Stross's brilliant novel Accelerando is available as a free Creative Commons download!
This novel collects and bridges all of his Hugo-nominated Manfred Macx
stories, published over the last several years in Asimov's Science
Fiction Magazine. Charlie is a wild talent, and he writes like the
love-child of Vernor Vinge, Neal Stephenson and Hunter S Thompson.
Once you start this book, you won't be able to stop.
Manfred's on the road again, making strangers rich.
It's a hot summer Tuesday, and he's standing in the plaza in front of
the Centraal Station with his eyeballs powered up and the sunlight
jangling off the canal, motor scooters and kamikaze cyclists whizzing
past and tourists chattering on every side. The square smells of water
and dirt and hot metal and the fart-laden exhaust fumes of cold
catalytic converters; the bells of trams ding in the background, and
birds flock overhead. He glances up and grabs a pigeon, crops the
shot, and squirts it at his weblog to show he's arrived. The bandwidth
is good here, he realizes; and it's not just the bandwidth, it's the
whole scene. Amsterdam is making him feel wanted already, even though
he's fresh off the train from Schiphol: He's infected with the dynamic
optimism of another time zone, another city. If the mood holds,
someone out there is going to become very rich indeed.
He wonders who it's going to be.
* * *
Manfred sits on a stool out in the car park at the Brouwerij 't IJ,
watching the articulated buses go by and drinking a third of a liter
of lip-curlingly sour gueuze. His channels are jabbering away in a
corner of his head-up display, throwing compressed infobursts of
filtered press releases at him. They compete for his attention,
bickering and rudely waving in front of the scenery. A couple of punks
– maybe local, but more likely drifters lured to Amsterdam by the
magnetic field of tolerance the Dutch beam across Europe like a pulsar
– are laughing and chatting by a couple of battered mopeds in the
far corner. A tourist boat putters by in the canal; the sails of the
huge windmill overhead cast long, cool shadows across the road. The
windmill is a machine for lifting water, turning wind power into dry
land: trading energy for space, sixteenth-century style. Manfred is
waiting for an invite to a party where he's going to meet a man he can
talk to about trading energy for space, twenty-first-century style,
and forget about his personal problems.
He's ignoring the instant messenger boxes, enjoying some
low-bandwidth, high-sensation time with his beer and the pigeons, when
a woman walks up to him, and says his name: "Manfred Macx?"
He glances up. The courier is an Effective Cyclist, all wind-burned
smooth-running muscles clad in a paean to polymer technology: electric
blue lycra and wasp yellow carbonate with a light speckling of anti
collision LEDs and tight-packed air bags. She holds out a box for him.
He pauses a moment, struck by the degree to which she resembles Pam,
his ex-fiance.
