Replay Radio geek solutions to geek

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems
09/21/2004 06:38 AM

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

Alberto Gonzales has said that the controversial Justice Department memo from 2002 which laid out presidential authority to allow torture of terrorism suspects was in response to "questions." Well, it turns out, those questions were his. The New York Times reports: "Until now, administration officials have been unwilling to provide details about the role Mr. Gonzales had in the production of the memorandum by the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel. Mr. Gonzales has spoken of the memorandum as a response to questions, without saying that most of the questions were his."

Geek ear

Geek ear 09/17/2004 12:59 AM

So I'm eating dinner and half-heartedly watching junk TiVo recorded, including this episode of Landscaper's Challenge (in case you're wondering, it's a homeowner thing), and I'm not actually watching but listening kind of and I hear the client make some jokes and I know that I know that voice from somewhere. I start watching it intently and racking my brain for a few minutes. Where have I heard that before? Books on tape? Narrator in a car commercial? Cartoon voice? And then it hits me: I've heard this guy "Al" dozens of times, but I've never seen him before. He does the commentary tracks on all the Simpson's DVDs.

It was show writer/director Al Jean getting his backyard done.

I had the honor of watching over Robert's coat and bag until someone came along and pushed it aside. I also had the honor of teasing Steve Gillmor over whether the lower case semantic web would establish clear meta-data standards for podcasting - faster than the uPPER CaSE heretics.

This is why it's important that we have Robert Scoble on the inside at Microsoft.

Gillmor is on the radio, er net, now..

Steve Gillmor, of eWeek, has been busy. He's doing "the Gillmor gang" (audio panel discussion, part of Doug Kaye's awesome IT Conversations).

And he has an interview, published in eWeek, with Google's Evan Williams, where Evan made the controversal statement that Atom is RSS (that kicked off a few blogosphere comments, I'll let you do the Feedster searches). I like how Steve hints to Bill Gates, on his blog, that we should pay attention to Technorati. Hmmm, Steve, actually the guy you need to get to pay attention to Technorati is Christopher Payne. He's the guy who runs MSN Search.

Lift and Reach and Hold That Pose, and Advance to the Next Level

"Ever greater weight loss - rather than a chance to battle bigger monsters - is one goal for players of Yourself!Fitness, a video game under development for Microsoft's Xbox. The new title, aimed at women, features a computer-generated personal trainer who guides users through a customized set of exercises and diets.

Players must reach certain goals to advance to the next level. The program creates a fitness plan for each person based on height, weight and other characteristics. The game's virtual coach, Maya, then guides users through a subset of 600 possible exercises, congratulating and encouraging them when they achieve their goals.

The creators of Yourself!Fitness at ResponDesign, a game developer based in Portland, Ore., think their new title is a natural successor to exercise videos and DVD's, which continue to sell more than 30 million units a year, the company's co-founder, Ted Spooner, said....

After the game's release this fall, the company expects to make a Sony Playstation version available at the end of the year, and to sell an Xbox Live version in 2005 that will let participants use a wireless headset to talk to each other during the game.

'Users will be able to create an online community to discuss each other's accomplishments and chat while working out,' Mr. Spooner said. 'This will be a virtual gym.'

Company executives expect the game, which cost millions to develop, to sell several hundred thousand units. Assuming that happens, ResponDesign is ready to create spinoff titles focusing on Pilates and Yoga." [New York Times: Technology]

I'm surprised it's taken this long to happen, although I suppose I'm most surprised that the company didn't start with the Playstation for its EyeToy accessory. Hey, you could be right there in the video with Richard Simmons or Jane Fonda!
