Soup of the Day

Soup of the Day

A pile of unsorted old photos was at the bottom of the box where the slides I went hunting for were. It was a surprise to discover this photo taken about 7 years ago with an old EOS at a sandwich shop on the Fresh Pond Mall which was right around the corner from BBN where I worked. There was a McDonald's across the street but the group I worked in would usually go en masse to this place for good fresh sandwiches and cheeky abuse.

The guy who ran the shop [pictured] was a real sweetheart and always had a smile and something fun to talk about. He knew all of his regular customers in spite of lunchtime being SRO daily. His mother was similarly adorable and, being Greek, would always wink at me as if she knew a special ancient wisdom mostly forgotten that my being the only woman in this unkempt group of nerds I worked with could use the friendly feminine comraderie. The guy in the kitchen behind him flipped off the camera but he was always a funny guy.I don't know how many sandwiches they made every day, but it was a rite of passage in our group to always take the new guy to lunch and goad them into ordering the small meatball sub. Seemingly innocent and delicious until one of the guys at the counter yells loudly, "Hey, guy! You order the small balls?", and then giggles when he sees him blush. I miss those guys and wonder if the place is still around and if they still close the shop for two weeks every year to take the entire family and staff on holiday to Greece.

Rough ly seven years ago: "I think each of us has a kernel, under all the layers of experience and pain, that's ageless and perfect. Some people call this a heart, the organ that pumps blood thru our bodies. Others call it a spirit, the essence of the person. Whatever you call it, it's there, and you can easily find it."

Changes:
The program was rewritten to create better parse trees out of ambiguous HTML. Navigation and search of the parse tree were greatly improved, and a pretty-printer was added.

Spam For Your Soul?

Spam For Your Soul? 03/28/2005 06:00 AM
With spam filters getting better all the time, spammers are continuing their efforts to get around them by including some non-spammy text in just about any email they send. This isn't new, of course. Spammers have been using such techniques for many years. However, it appears that some writers-block suffering writers have given up on the old standby of reply ing to spam and are now searching through spam for words of enlightenment. It takes some time, apparently, but you can pick out all sorts of tidbits for divine inspiration if you're willing to look hard enough. Of course, not all of it is just designed to get around filters. It turns out that some ministers are now spamming as well.

Walt would turn over in his cryonic chamber... (I know, I know, it's not true.) Speaking of famil y trees, Roy Disney (the last board member with ties to the founding family) resigned from the company Sunday, calling for the ouster of Chairman Michael Eisner. Stanley Gold soon soon followed. In a harsh letter, Disney said the entertainment conglomerate had "lost its focus, its creative energy, and its heritage" and that the public now held the perception that company is "rapacious, soul-less, and always looking for the 'qu ick buck'." No word yet from the Disneyland obsessives, but the folks at MousePlanet 's Mousepad seem optimistic about this development...

Don't call him chicken 07/10/2004 02:43 PM
Sunjit Kumar of Suva, Fiji, was raised by chickens. As a young boy, his grandfather locked him in a chicken coop where he lived for several years. After Kumar escaped, he was taken to an old age home where the baffled staff confined him for twenty years. Now though, Elizabeth Clayton, president of a Rotary Club in Fiji's capital city, has, er, taken Kumar under her wing.
"Sujit would mostly hop around like a chicken, peck at his food, perch like a chicken and make noises like a chicken," she said. "He would prefer to roost on the floor to go to sleep rather than sleep in a bed."
Kumar currently resides in a former factory while undergoing therapy. Video available here. More of the story here.

Ms. Jardin, Though you might be intereested in this tidbit. I got a phone call from International Communications Research (ICR) for a survey yesterday. Buried among the questions about credit counseling services, political affiliation, and consumption of coffee, tobacco, and fast food products, I got this series of questions.

"Do you have an Internet connection? Have you ever visited the website subservientchicken.com? Would you visit it again?"

These were followed up by questions about the BK Tendercrisp Sandwich and their low-carb menu. Looks like they're looking to evaluate the potency of their stealth marketing campaign.

Dixie Chicks Pulled from Air After Bashing Bush Dude, these Texas people didn't find criticism of the president unpatriotic when Bill Clinton was president. They thought it was a sacred duty...Apparently country stations in Texas and elsewhere are pulling Dixie Chicks albums because their lead singer, while on an overseas tour, criticized Bush, saying she was ashamed to be from the state as him. People who want to criticize the critics of the critical comments are supporting the Chicks by buying their albums and requesting their songs. O'Neil the Chicken

O'Neil the Chicken 01/16/2004 01:02 PM

Too bad O'Neil is backtracking on his accounts of the Bush administration.  His words matched my expectation of Bush perfectly.  When Bush got elected, I expected him to look for excuses to attack Iraq.  And I would have been surprised if he paid attention to anything other than the Bible and the picture of Saddam Hussein after he got to the White House.  Baloonfoot indeed.

I think O'Neil spoke the truth and now he is acting like a chicken.  The sad thing is that I am not surprised.  Only thing missing is Osama bin Laden announcing that he attacked America because he learned of a secret plot by Bush to invade and occupy Iraq.  Sheesh.  I'll bet Arnold the Terminator would make a much better President than Bush.

BTW, check out the 30 second ads at Bush in 30 Seconds site even if you are pro-Bush.  Ads oversimplify as usual but they are hillarious and very well done.  I am impressed.
