Richard Gere and Chief Islamic Justice
in Palestinian Pro-Vote PSA
01/03/2005 10:27 AM
One Voice is a project lead by my friend Daniel Lubetzky. He is
doing a lot of cutting edge work bringing peace to the Middle East
particularly by trying to amplify the moderate voices of the people in
Palestine and Israel. We have been bugging him to start a blog and he
did. He's given us a scoop on his new blog.
The first-ever Get-Out-The-Vote Campaign in the
Palestinian Authority, conducted by OneVoice-Palestine, is about to
release a Public Service Announcement that will turn heads: it
juxtaposes Sheikh Taysir al Tamimi, the Chief Palestinian Islamic
Justice, and Father Attallah Hanna, the Patriarchite of the Greek
Orthodox Church in Jerusalem, with Richard Gere, the film star and
humanitarian. They all encourage the Palestinian people to go out and
vote. Sheikh Tamimi calls it a "religious and a national commandment"
to participate in the elections.
The 1 minute ad will air on Palestinian National TV as well as on
local Palestinian stations during the week prior to the Presidential
elections.

Electronic Voting Machine Shown To
Mis-Record Votes
Electronic Voting Machine Shown To
Mis-Record Votes
05/14/2004 03:14 PMOne of the silly arguments of those
defenin
g poorly designed electronic voting machines is that there's never
been any evidence that they miscount votes. Well, there goes that
argument. Found over at
Freedom
to Tinker is news of some research done on electronic voting
machines used in Florida elections that clearly show
the
machine's voting image and the audit logs do not match, which
could lead to votes being lost or not counted properly. What's scary
about this is that the report noting these problems was written
a
year ago and, even those these problems were known, the machines
were still used and the
same problems occurred again. As
always, the local election supervisor claims that, even though they
know about this problem, it's no big deal. She claims that the
only problem is with the audit system - and not the vote
tabulation. Of course, if the audit system doesn't match the vote
tabulation there's no way to know that the vote tabulation actually
works properly. Even worse, the "workaround" the supervisor came up
with was basically to use uncertified software. What's wrong with a
paper trail again?
Ohio Authorizes E-Voting, Wants Paper
Record Within Two Years
Ohio Authorizes E-Voting, Wants Paper
Record Within Two Years
05/10/2004 11:53 AMWhile California is
banning
all e-voting machines unless they agree to some fairly strict
security provisions, it looks like Ohio has now
auth
orized the use of e-voting machines for the November election.
The state will require a paper trail for e-voting machines - but not
until May of 2006. If they're going to require it anyway, I don't see
why they shouldn't require it now. This basically means that for the
next two years we have no way of knowing how accurate votes from Ohio
will be.

Who Needs Facts When Opinions Can Be

03/29/2005 05:32 PMWhile actual studies looking at the language skills of kids who send
instant messages and SMS text messages suggest that
there
's no difference in language skills, why should actually looking
at the subjects stop those who are worried about the impacts of these
communications technologies? The folks over at Reader's Digest -- who
built their whole business on the idea of "condensing" things down --
have published a study saying that
many parents
believe that such messaging technologies harm the vocabulary
skills of their kids. Of course, the headline is more
inflammatory than reality, because it's still less than half of
parents who believe so (a quarter of parents believe such technologies
help vocabulary skills). Still, the problem with this study is that
it's not studying the actual issue at all. It's studying what parents
think is happening, as opposed to what is
actually
happening. However, for many people that distinction gets lost, and
they assume the study actually says something it never did.
