Rasmus Lerdorf on PHP.
12/03/2003 07:24 PM(A new IT Conversation.) "I really don't like programming. I built
this tool to program less so that I could just reuse code."
Ten years later, PHP is now running on the web servers of one third of
all domains on the World Wide Web.
Rasmus explains why this easy-to-use scripting language can power some
of the Web's busiest sites including portions of Yahoo! that handle
over 120 million unique visitors each month. PHP is scalable because
of its "shared-nothing" architecture, unlike Java or similar
virtual-machine runtime environments.
Whether you're already a PHP user, or haven't yet taken the plunge,
you'll enjoy this interview with its humble creator--a true pioneer of
the open-source movement. You'll also hear what's in the works for the
next major release, PHP 5.0, and why Rasmus believes the Web will
become "the interface to everything."

06/18/2002 09:18 AM3 more questions from corporate PHP users whose lawyers want a
guarantee that PHP is free of any patented code or algorithms.
Explaining yet again that, as an open source project, we do not have
any means to provide such patent indemnification. Perhaps an addition
to the "no warranty" clause in the PHP license is in order here which
explicitly states that we can not possibly provide patent
indemnification.
This whole patent thing is getting out of hand. It is even popping up
on the PHP mailing lists. Someone posted an algorithm recently and
someone else piped up stating that he had patented that particular
(obvious) algorithm years ago.

Rasmus Lerdorf
06/05/2002 07:50 AMIn the end, what I think set PHP apart in the early days, and still
does today, is that it always tries to find the shortest path to
solving the web problem. It does not try to be a general-purpose
scripting language and anybody looking to solve a web problem will
usually find a very direct solution through PHP. Many of the
alternatives that claim to solve the web problem are just too complex.
When you need something up and working by Friday so you don't have to
spend all weekend leafing through 800-page manuals, PHP starts to look
pretty good.
The best interview yet. Link thanks to http://phpdeveloper.org/

I browsed through the chapters that interested me, and this book is a
wonderful introduction to PHP. It strikes an excellent balance between
introductory material and advanced stuff. For beginners and
intermediate users, highly recommended.

Computerworld Falls For RFID Rifle Hoax
Computerworld Falls For RFID Rifle Hoax
04/28/2004 12:15 AMLast year Brian McWilliams pulled off a
hoax on
Computerworld, convincing a reporter that he was a terrorist
hacker who had programmed the Slammer worm. When the story came out
there was a lot of embarrassment all around, but it appears that
Computerworld hasn't beefed up their fact checking department much.
Earlier this month there was some
buzz
around the blog world about a
r
ifle that would shoot RFID tags into people in order to track
them. It wasn't that difficult (beyond just using a bit of common
sense) to realize this was actually a
hoax<
/a>. However, thanks to Politech, we discover that
Computerworld has fallen for the hoax completely and written
up a whole story about it. I wonder how long the story will last
until it's taken down. Of course, this also raises questions about
where Computerworld got the story. Did they pick it up off a blog and
then fail to credit them?
