05/05/2004 04:06 AMAbout a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to
SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point
for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the
terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification,
addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and
privileges that we associate with open source software.
Open Source Metadata Framework (OMF)
Open Source Metadata Framework (OMF)
04/17/2004 06:05 AMOpen Source Metadata Framework (OMF)http://www.ibiblio.org/osrt/om
f/The OMF aims to collect data about Open Source
documentation, or metadata, that will be used to describe the
documentation. The idea is that the OMF will act as a sophisticated
card catalog type of system for the numerous Open Source documentation
projects that exist. The OMF offers a number of advantages over
standard card catalog type systems, however. Chief among these is the
fact that the OMF has been designed from the ground up to be
completely open, standards based, and sharable. We will accomplish
this by using pre-defined standards (XML and the Dublin Core
description for metadata) and allowing all metadata generated to be
accessed by anyone that wants it. Because the metadata itself is to be
stored in XML files, anyone should be able to use it.

Good article today listing the "Top 10 Open Source Tools for eActivism". Some of these I
hadn't even heard of before (like ActionApps, completely new

Open source tools are a natural fit for e-activism, since they are
born of the same bootstrap, grassroots mentality as a good e-activist
campaign. Plus, they're free :-) Or at least cheap -- and often far
better in quality than their commercial counterparts. [Seen on Many-to-Many]

open source solutions to their IT problems. Like the rest of the IT

resources go further. Unlike the rest of the industry, and atypical
for government, federal and state agencies are embracing open source
ideas and ideals.

02/15/2004 10:31 AMWhy
Microsoft Should Open Source the Leaked Source: From the

just open-source the code that was leaked last week. He makes a good case,
but there's no chance Bill would actually go for it.
Why not make lemonade out of lemons by doing the
unthinkable: Redistribute the complete NT4 and Windows 2000 code base
via either a fully OSS-certified or quasi-open-source license on the
MSDN web site?
Sound crazy? Maybe. But think about the positive implications of a
fully Microsoft-sanctioned complete release of this
code...

03/24/2005 05:17 AMManaging even a medium-sized Web site can be a real headache. If you
are tired of manually managing content, updating news, and keeping
track of old items, then you need a content management system --
software that makes it easy to handle the mundane administrative
duties of a Web site. A good CMS lets you divide the task of posting
content among many relatively unskilled people. The Mambo CMS,
released under the GPL, is designed to handle the largest of Web
sites, and, in my experience, does so admirably.

being driven by the OSS+Java stuff: Spring, Struts, Lucene, and so on.
